Even though I teach Hemingway
and Joyce today, I think the first novel I ever read
cover to cover was Robert A. Heinlein’s The Puppet
Masters. That was in sixth grade. But Science Fiction
has always been an underground, nerdy sort of thing.
Guess that describes me pretty well. Still, I doubt
I could write a serious treatment of any SF theme today.
Life is too weird. But wouldn’t it seem normal
for a metallic disc to land on the Washington Mall and
a tall silver robot get out and say Klaatu or whatever?
Very strange and oddly familiar.
What you get in Anachronon is
an updated, telescoping SF story in the only mode of
thought left to us at this point: the satire of real
life. Come to think of it, sixth grade was cool.
