Heather "Ratlady"
Tomlinson has been writing seriously for six years and
during that time has written a number of tales for children.
Her characters are lovable and amusing and she puts
a great deal of thought into developing them. Heather
doesn't write exclusively for children, but she does
prefer to write for them. She says children are not
the easiest to please, but you know when they like you.
Roger the Trainee Reindeer is the first of her children's
stories to be published and she hopes one day to see
him in print.
Heather lives in Great Britain where she shares her
home with her beloved pet rats. She set up The Rat Rehoming
Register in June, 1999, which is a rescue service for
unwanted and neglected pet rats. "They are such
intelligent and affectionate creatures," she says.
"People don't realise that pet, or Fancy rats,
are as far removed from the plague carrying black rat
as the Labrador puppy is from the wolf." Heather's
love of animals goes even further. She is a vegan and
never touches anything that contains animal products
or has been tested on animals. She believes we should
cherish and protect animals and all living creatures.
After all, they were here first. Heather was recently
commissioned to write a series of articles on pet rats
for the UK magazine Animals, Animals, Animals. Since
then, she has been commissioned to write 12 more articles
on both rats and mice.
Heather hopes one day to finish her novel "Pryderi's
Pack" which is set in the 14th century in Wales
- just as the Black Death creeps over the borders. The
story is told through the eyes of a pack of rats - "Pryderi's
Pack."
