Chapter 110

We creep closer to the standoff, looking for an opening.

I signal for complete silence. One wrong move, and this powder keg of competing teams will explode.

Unfortunately, the universe has a sense of humor.

Sera, still adjusting to her restored abilities, misses a piece of fallen debris in the dim light. Her foot connects with a metal canister, sending it skittering across the floor with a sound that might as well be an explosion in the tense silence.

Every head in the chamber whips toward us. Eyes, compound eyes, sensory appendages, all lock onto Team Exodus with laser focus.

"So much for stealth," I mutter, ready to activate the resonance blade.

But then something unexpected happens. The insectoid team, mandibles still clicking rapidly, backs away from the crystal. They place it carefully on the floor and retreat several steps, their compound eyes never leaving me.

I reach for my sword, expecting this to be some kind of trap or the precursor to an attack, when voices call out from multiple directions.

  "Wait!"

  "No need for combat!"

  "We don't want trouble, Kinetic!"

I freeze, genuinely confused. The other teams are actively backing away, creating a clear path between us and the now-abandoned crystal.

"What is this?" I ask, suspicion making me keep my hand near the resonance blade.

A human from one of the other teams steps forward slightly, hands raised in a universal gesture of non-aggression. "We all saw your match against Team Brute Force yesterday. The whole arena's been talking about nothing else."

"So?" I keep my voice neutral, still not understanding their reaction.

"So you can kill all of us!" another team member calls out. "We're only B ranks here. Not even as strong as Team Brute Force! It would be suicide to fight you for that crystal."

I glance at Desta, who nods slightly in confirmation. "Central Arena ranking hierarchy creates predictable combat outcome scenarios," she explains quietly. "Statistical probability heavily favors higher-ranked assets in tiered confrontations."

"Please, you can have the thing, just let us go," the first human continues. "Nobody here wants to die for a crystal, no matter how valuable."

Sera leans close to whisper, "They're just... giving it to us?"

The insectoid team's leader makes a series of clicking sounds that somehow translate to meaning in my mind: "Take the crystal, A-rank. We choose survival over futile combat."

Still wary of a trap, I approach slowly, telekinetic awareness extended to maximum sensitivity. The other teams continue backing away, creating an even wider berth. When I reach the crystal, I carefully lift it with telekinesis rather than touching it directly.

The Resonant Mind Crystal hovers before me, pulsing with iridescent energy that seems to respond to my telekinetic field. It's beautiful in a strange, alien way. Geometric patterns that shouldn't be possible in a natural formation, facets that seem to change when viewed from different angles.

"Thank you for your... cooperation," I say to the room at large, still half-expecting someone to make a move.

But instead, the other teams actually make way for us as I turn back toward my teammates.

"Let's go," I tell them quietly.

Desta steps forward, her eyes flickering with code as she scans the laboratory. "Request: brief deviation before departure."

"What's wrong?" I ask, still holding the crystal telekinetically.

"Nothing wrong," she replies, her typically neutral expression showing a hint of interest. "Scan detected quantum computational matrix in east wing. Technology compatible with my system access capabilities."

  "A computer?" Sera translates.

"Quantum core," Desta corrects. "Could significantly enhance wrist unit processing architecture. Upgrade potential for system hacking capabilities."

I hesitate, glancing at the other teams who are still maintaining their distance. "You think there's a computer core that could boost your technokinesis?"

Desta nods. "Probability of compatible quantum architecture: 86.3%. Acquisition would represent significant enhancement for Team Exodus tactical options."

If you encounter this story on Amazon, note that it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

"Worth a quick detour," I decide. The other teams clearly aren't looking for a fight, and a boost to Desta's abilities could prove valuable for future challenges.

We move carefully through the chamber toward the east wing, the other teams parting before us like water around a stone. It's strange being feared like this, creating a mixture of satisfaction and discomfort that I'm not quite sure how to process.

The east wing proves to be a data center of sorts, rows of damaged servers and processing units filling a room that must have once been state-of-the-art, at least in the fictional narrative of the Crucible's "abandoned laboratory." Most of the equipment is obviously non-functional, but Desta moves with purpose toward a sealed compartment at the back of the room.

"Quantum core located behind security partition," she announces, her fingers already working over her wrist computer. The small device projects holographic interfaces that she manipulates with practiced precision, her eyes flickering rapidly with code as she interfaces with the system.

"Can you get through the security?" I ask, still scanning for potential threats.

"Affirmative," she responds, her fingers moving faster than seems humanly possible. "Override protocols identified. Executing system penetration sequence."

The sealed compartment hisses open, revealing a device about the size of a softball, a complex spherical matrix of crystalline components surrounding what appears to be a liquid core that pulses with energy similar to the Resonant Mind Crystal.

"Quantum computational architecture confirmed," Desta says, something like satisfaction coloring her typically neutral tone. "System compatible with my neural interface parameters."

"Will it fit your wrist computer?" Sera asks, peering at the device curiously.

"Integration requires reconfiguration," Desta explains, carefully removing the quantum core. "But technokinetic capabilities allow direct system adaptation."

As if to demonstrate, she holds the quantum core against her wrist unit. Her hands glow as the components of the device shift to accommodate the new hardware. The liquid center of the core flows into Desta's computer in defiance of physics, while the crystalline matrix reconfigures itself around her wrist.

"Whoa," Sera murmurs, watching the technological symbiosis with wide eyes.

When the process completes, Desta's wrist computer has transformed into something far more sophisticated—an intricate blend of her original device and the quantum core, with holographic interfaces that pulse with complex data patterns.

"System integration successful," she reports, her eyes flickering with more complex code patterns than I've seen before. "Processing capabilities increased by 427%. System access potential significantly enhanced."

"In normal human speak: she just got a major upgrade," Sera translates, looking impressed.

"Let's get out of here while our good luck holds," I suggest, still holding the Resonant Mind Crystal telekinetically.

We retrace our steps through the central chamber, where the remaining teams are now arguing amongst themselves over secondary resources.

As we pass by, I catch a snippet of conversation from one of the alien teams, crystalline entities whose transparent bodies refract light in complex patterns. Their communication is mostly visual, pulses of color and light exchanged between members, but whatever translation technology the aliens use work for them too and I can hear their speech in my head.

"...should have predicted this outcome," one of them says, frustration evident in the harsh red flashes rippling through its crystalline form. "New A ranked telekinetic with molecular control capabilities? Of course he would target the Mind Crystal immediately after cycle reset."

Another member pulses with deep blue annoyance. "We wasted valuable resource acquisition time. This cycle's Crucible expedition is essentially forfeit."

"The ranking databases clearly indicated his telekinetic specialization," the first one continues, sharp edges forming across its surface. "Our tactical analysis should have accounted for this variable. Species inexperience is no excuse, humans shown to be highly adaptable."

"Next cycle, we bypass Verdant Crucible entirely," the leader decides, its core brightening with finality. "Let the newly-ranked assets fight over low-tier resources. We focus on Molten Chambers where our physiological advantages remain relevant."

They fall silent as they notice me watching them, their crystalline forms immediately shifting to neutral patterns that reveal nothing of their earlier frustration. I nod slightly in acknowledgment and continue toward the exit, the Resonant Mind Crystal humming softly beside me.

The maintenance tunnel provides the same discreet exit path, and within minutes, we're back in the Verdant Crucible proper, safely away from the laboratory complex with our prizes secured.

"I can't believe they just gave us the crystal," Sera says as we put distance between ourselves and the lab. "Is being A-rank really that intimidating?"

"Rank designations represent established combat effectiveness parameters," Desta explains, still adjusting to her upgraded system. "Central Arena historical data indicates 97.8% victory rate for A-rank assets against B-rank teams in direct confrontation scenarios."

"They made a rational decision," I say, examining the Resonant Mind Crystal more carefully now that we're safe. "Why fight a battle you're almost certain to lose?"

The crystal pulses in response to my telekinetic field, almost as if it's alive in some strange way. The patterns within it shift and flow, creating geometric structures that seem deliberately ordered rather than random.

"Zix'ilit," I activate the comm system. "Mission successful. We've secured the Resonant Mind Crystal."

His excited squeal comes through immediately, so high-pitched it makes me wince. "AMAZING! First attempt success! Resource acquisition incredible! Other teams just surrendered?"

"They decided discretion was the better part of valor," I confirm, unable to keep a hint of satisfaction from my voice. "My new reputation apparently preceded me."

"Fame has advantages!" Zix'ilit bounces audibly through the comm. "A-rank classification creates significant deterrent effect! And quantum core acquisition for Desta? Unexpected bonus!"

We make our way back through the twisted jungle, encountering fewer threats than on our journey in. Must have already been cleared by the other teams.

As we walk, I reflect on how dramatically things have changed. Weeks ago, we were struggling just to survive in Central Arena, overwhelmed by Team Brute Force and searching desperately for a path forward. Now teams of experienced assets step aside at our approach, choosing surrender over confrontation.

The Resonant Mind Crystal hovers beside me, pulsing in tune with my telekinetic field. One step closer to the Crown of Mental Superiority, one step closer to freedom.
