Awake

The first thing I heard when I woke was a beeping, that happened every so often. that’s not my normal sounding alarm clock. I leave my eyes closed panicked.

What do I do? I’m not in my room. I can clearly tell that- my sheets aren’t this thin and my blanket provides more warmth than this one on me. I give it another minute; I don’t hear anyone. Slowly I open my eyes to find my worst fear isn’t happening, I’m not kidnapped. I let out a little laugh- a hospital room. I frown; why am I here? I can’t remember why I’m here, nor how I got here.

“Veronica!?” I lift my head to the voice I know all too well. My mother “Honey you’re awake.”

She looks different stepping into the light, older even. “Mom, mom why am I here?”

”Do you not remember?” Her face pales. I come to realize I don’t remember much of anything. I scan my body and see some scrapes on my arm, I lift my hand to feel a wrap on my head. “Ow!” I say pressing it. “What happened?” I mutter.
