Prologue
After their brutal attack of Capulet through the use of Karkal Mountain's primal tribes, the growing empire ceased their greedy consumption of smaller countries, allowing the continent of Heimurrin to settle back into an uneasy peace. The city of Falconeyre repaired the damage to their walls and streets, with the King of Tibernia's forces remaining on watch for several months, watchful lest they be caught unawares again.
In the Falconeyre Falconry Academy, young Dannon O'Collier has been accepted into the advanced five-year training program for prospective subjects of the King who bear the gift of Raptor Speech, or the ability to speak with many birds of higher intelligence. His mother, now being cared for by relatives on the southern Tibernian coast, is slowly improving in health, and a letter arrives for Dann once every month.

In another world, ruled by the powerful Order of the Elders, fires rage in several small hamlets surrounding the strongholds of several lower magicians. The common people, who lack the power to manipulate their world as nobility do, are furious over a number of deaths following the dispute of the Elders with these magicians, who sought to gain independence from the Order. The common people, acting as pawns between the magic casters, have lost their crops and their homes; they now seek retribution upon their oppressors through the dismantling of their rich dwellings, which have become empty since the Order abducted the half score of men responsible for the beginning of the fight. It is still undecided as to what the Order plans to do with them, though many hope that they will be executed for their disobedience.
