Ch4 - The Cardinal From Fantasy Germany

About a month after I hired Sola and Luna, I summoned them to my room.

Their official titles weren’t handmaiden anymore.

As Mr. Sigurd put it, a boy with personal maids was… weird, since it was usually a lady who’d require a personal maid. Especially in the noble circles, I would be deemed as a sissy little boy who had trouble putting on a shirt.

So, Mr. Sigurd rewrote their documents to be valet, but since valet implied them to be men. So he invented a new word.

  Valetress

It’s an unorthodox solution. And it would most likely bother those who wrote the dictionaries for a living. But it worked.

Their uniform had changed with their titles.

Now, they wore dark blue pleated mini skirts with a white blouse tucked into it. Over it were blue two piece cloaks that had been waxed to be used as raincoats, and on it there was our family emblem embroidered. Their legs were wrapped in black stockings, held up by garter belts, slightly visible between the skirt and the stockings. For footwear, they had black boots to allow them stable travel from grassland all the way to rock mountains.

I never understood how short skirts were acceptable by people of this world. If time was rewinded seventy years, you’d see priests claiming that a woman’s shin was the embodiment of lust that’d drive men mad.

Apparently, the trend started in Procullia as a byproduct of the early women’s right movement. The trend was then spread to young people as a sign of rebellion, then it turned into fashion.

Originally, people scolded at it because they said it showed ‘too much’ of a woman’s legs, but compared to our world, this one was more liberal. Given enough time, people got used to it.

The flow of time cuts through all things like water to stone.

And the pre-existence of stockings was contributed by short skirts being borned 60 years earlier. Interestingly enough, corsets had gone out of fashion in this world because someone invented the bra 20 years ago, which was 90 years ahead of its time. Another example of how this world was very different from ours.

Sola and Luna now kneel before me like knights at my service.

“I have something to tell you two.” I said “I possess a special ability to form soul bonds with people I trusted to enhance their abilities. I don’t know who gifted it to me, but it has been there since birth.”

They seemed to be surprised, but kept their reaction minimal.

“I have never told anyone else. You are the first. That alone should be enough to tell you how much I trust you.”

  Sola tilted her head.

“So, is Our Lord a Chosen?”

  A fair question

Chosens were individuals gifted with abilities beyond the comprehension of regulars. Sometimes, they were selected by deities to carry out their wills. Other times, they were borned completely random. Figures like Hannibals of Carthage, the Great Sage Sylvia and Napoleon of Procullia were all Chosens, legendary people who had changed the world, for better or worse.

  I gave a faint smile.“Perhaps I am.”

That was all they needed. It might be a vague answer, but most often, even the Chosen themselves aren’t sure whether they were really Chosen or winners of the gene lottery.

Sola accepted this with a sly nod and turned toward Luna, winking at her.

  And together they said

  “We shall accept.”

I then raised both of my arms to put my hands atop both of their head, they both closed their eyes synchronously.

[Would you like to tame Sola & Luna?]

  Yes.

[The Saintess of the Sun and the Moon has been tamed]

Hmmm… now what does that mean?

  Eh, not like I cared.

  [Slots ?]

[Since Sola & Luna come in a pair, they will only take one slot]

“That will do” I said “how do both of you feel now?”

  They opened their eyes.

“I felt like a missing part of me that I never knew existed has suddenly been filled.”

Sola pressed her hand against her chest.

  “It felt warm and liberating.”

Luna answered in a brief sentence.

  “Is that so?”

I smiled and lowered my hands.

“You two are dismissed, feel free to tell me if any changes occur.”

They now got up from their kneeling pose and curtsied in astonishing synchronization.

  “Yes, my Master.”

They said in unison before exiting the room.

  “Master…huh? Interesting choice of word.”

I mumbled alone looking at the door they just exited from.

3 months later, I was called to my Father’s office.

Inside, four people had already been seated, there was my Father behind his desk; On his right, there sat Sola and Luna; Across from them, sat a man wearing a white robe, decorated by golden trim. Judging by his attire, he was the cardinal from the Church of Light. And behind him, stood two unarmed soldiers in white uniform wearing a cuirass.

“Ah, you’re here.” Father said, "Take a seat.”

Lord Camelot pointed to the vacant spot next to Sola and Luna.

I took a seat, the maid on stand by approached to pour me a cup of tea.

Then he gestured to the cardinal.

“This is his eminence, Cardinal Johan Schwarz, Archbishop of the Vokl?nt Empire.”

The cardinal gave a stiff nod.

“He has brought the message that Sola and Luna were chosen by the oracle to become saintesses.”

I took a sip of tea, savoring the warmth. Then I set the cup down and spoke to Father.

  “Have you agreed?”

“Not yet, I wanted to hear your opinion first.”

I nodded, then turned my gaze toward the twins. Sola met her eyes with mine, and her focused expression softened as if a wave of calmness had sedated her thoughts.

  “What about you two?”

“We don’t want to become saints.”

Sola answered without any hesitation, her expression was calm.

  “I agree with my sister.”

Luna followed up. And the Cardinal’s face immediately soured.

“Then, Father, my opinion is that you should decline.”

  BANG

The room froze as the Cardinal slammed his palm against the table.

“Nonsense! How dare you reject such honorable offers!”

Lord Camelot raised a hand and tapped twice on the table, a gesture for his silence.

“Calm yourself, Cardinal, you heard his answer. It’s done.”

“No, Lord Camelot.” He said “Denying the request from His Holiness is a sin against the Light itself.”

  Lord Camelot’s eyes narrowed.

“Are you threatening my family, Cardinal?”

“We do not worship your god, and yet you dare come to my family to tell me and my children what to do?”

The cardinal bit his lips and he stood up.

“Leaving so soon?” Father’s face turned cool. “At least finish your tea.”

The maid opened the door for him. The soldiers followed up as he moved to the exit, just before he stepped outside, Father spoke.

“I will be honest with you, we don’t want to have a conflict with you, neither does His Holiness. So let this go, for your own sake.”

The Cardinal paused a few seconds before disappearing behind the door.

In the Theocratic nation of Celestia, a boy and a girl sat exchanging words about recent events. Their robe bore the insignia of the church’s private mage corps, and the pawn insignia under it signified their status as trainees.

A position that many lowborns would consider fortunate.

They were rather young, about nine years old. However, the way they talk, the topics of their discussions were unnaturally mature for their age.

“Cardinal Schwarz sent a telegraph over” The boy began, setting his teacup gently down. “Due to intervention from the House of Camelot, he was unable to recruit the Sun and the Moon to join the rank of saints.”

  “Who?”

“Sola and Luna, the overpowered side characters, if you remember?”

“Were they important to the story?”

“Not exactly, they only appeared in dialogue and occasional cutscenes, the only way to use them was through a pay wall.”

“So what are you getting at?”

“Something we don’t understand has changed the story.”

The girl took a sip of her own tea, as if stalling for thought.

“Could be one of those uncooperative reincarnators messing around.”

“I don’t believe it’s one of them, I have friends surveillancing the uncooperative ones, none of them share any connections with the House of Camelot.”

“Perhaps your blessings malfunctioned and there was a slip up during the initial search for all the reincarnators.”

  The boy shaked his head.

“No” He said firmly “I was sure I found all of them.”

He sipped from his cup before continuing.

“It might be some minor changes that rippled to this outcome, a butterfly effect.”

  “Could be.”

A brief pause settled in the room, the boy leaned forward.

  “I need a favor.”

The girl tilted her head, “What is it?”

“I am a little short on helpers here, so could you spare some men to help me monitor the Camelot family?”

“Of course, but it won’t be free.”

  “What do you want?”

“Maybe you should introduce me to that friend of yours, the ‘inventor’, he’s weird, but I find him to be interesting.”

  The boy sighed.

“If that’s all you want, fine.”
