Not only did I know she gained an extremely valuable power, but she also had experience as a nurse… I needed her, and now I was pnning on kidnapping her as well as all the patients that could survive if given enough time to recover. Thankfully, this was a hospital on a smaller scale. There were maybe thirty people up here, half were probably terminal, while the other half were too old for me to really care if they died.
It was a sad truth, but I put more importance on the younger generation than anything else. The death rate for children and the elderly was far higher than for normal people in the first part of the apocalypse. It was from the virus that spread, but also from the extreme shifts in temperature, as well as getting them sick more easily. The younger people who lived tended to be on the more resilient side because of that.
At the end of the day, I didn’t care about the reason, I just wanted to help people and preferably help people I know are for sure going to die if I don’t intervene. I had a way to convince Jade, at the very least, that I was magical. “Can I try something?” She nodded, and I tried to store her. One moment she’s sitting on the bed, the next she’s inside my storage. Thank god it took her clothes with her, that would have been extremely awkward to expin if it didn’t.
Time was slowed down to a tenth of normal speed, so I could take an hour, and it would only be six minutes for Alice. Thinking about it further, if I could just store anyone inside my aura, that would be an extremely strong thing I could do in a fight. There had to be a catch, I just didn’t know it yet. I doubted there wouldn’t be a drawback to just storing my enemies to deal with ter.
I walked out of the room and looked for Jade. She was making her way to another room, and I stored her as well. The immediate intense pain as I did so was something I didn’t expect, as I went into my storage dimension to see what she was doing. She was just standing there as she looked down at Alice, who was just lying on the ground. “Fuck. Fuck this hurts.” Okay, so I can’t store people who will develop powers naturally, it looks like, because they generate their own energy. “I’m kicking you out of here, don’t freak out.”
If I weren’t so much stronger than her, I doubt I’d have even been able to put her inside my storage. It was something to think about, perhaps when I didn’t have this insane pain in my gut from having Jade inside me. Now I know how the women I fuck feel. Spitting her out, we both appear in the same position as I prepare to cover her mouth if she goes to scream. She doesn’t, though.
“What was that?” She asked in a curious way, not like a woman who might have just been kidnapped should act. I guess I still viewed her as the hardened veteran of the apocalypse she was in the first timeline. “It was my power. It lets me store other people, but it looks like if that person will develop a power in the future, I can’t because it hurts me.
She looked even happier at that. “Wait, so you’re telling me I’ll get a power like yours?” I look around and see the other nurses are watching us now as I whisper. “Not here, I’m going back to Alicia’s room. Come talk to me after you handle this patient.”
I waited for her to show up for another ten minutes, and she slipped through the door as stealthily as she could. It makes her stand out even more; if anyone were walking through the hallway, they’d wonder why the nurse was acting so weird. “Alright, so… I’m from the future, and the flood is far worse than you think it’s going to be. The entire country will lose access to power, the fields will be salted by the saltwater, and people will begin to starve. Before any of that, we’ll be stranded for about a month from the flooding, in that time, the hospital loses power, and this entire floor is left to die.”
I expined it as quickly and concisely as I could before she nodded. Once again, I was brought out of my own thoughts as I couldn’t put this happy woman with the beautiful femme fatale I knew from the future. “She mumbled to herself more than to me. “Yeah, I could see that happening. I doubt many would be willing to stick around in this hospital if they weren’t being paid to.”
I try to include her in my pns. “So, I’m going to move all the people who can eventually recover somewhere else so they’re not left to die. Do you know who doesn’t have a terminal illness in this wing?” With the pn in pce, I move from room to room with the four people who could survive if they had long enough to recover in the apocalypse.
A seven-year-old girl… I’d have to call her parents and have them move to the mansion or their own home after I expined things to them. An older man who didn’t want to be taken, he might have been good enough to walk away if the power had gone out. At least until I had to knock him unconscious so he didn’t start screaming when I said I wanted to take him away.
The next was a sixteen-year-old boy who broke both his legs. As I go to store him, I feel my power give me a warning this time. My eyes went wide as I realized he would gain power. “What’s your name?” He tried to clear his parched and scratchy throat as Jade handed him a cup. “Justin. You think I’ll get a power like you just showed me?”
“Yeah, and I just realized that was a good way to determine if people have powers now.” Justin was a skinny white kid who might have come from money. As it turned out, his family lived in the same gated community… I’m running into a lot of coincidences, more than should be feasible, but it was the local hospital. It meant I would have to come back to him after I got everyone else.
Moving to the next person, who was a very pretty dy recovering from major surgery, she was out hard from the drugs. I go to store her and get the same pulling sensation… No, what the fuck was happening. Almost fifty percent of the people in the ICU were going to develop powers. What was the probable cause of this? It has to be trauma or something… Maybe weakened immune systems have a higher chance of developing their powers.
I loaded her up into a wheelchair before heading back for Justin. No one tried to stop me or Jade as we pushed the patients out. That was fucking nuts to me. If the world wasn’t going to end, they’d be getting in a fuck ton of trouble. If there was a chance that something would come from this, I’d call the police myself to get them in trouble.
Either way, we loaded up the van with people and made our way back. It was already getting to nighttime. I had a few more things to do before tomorrow. At three o’clock, the wave would hit, and I didn’t feel prepared, but I was more prepared than waiting in my apartment for the flood to stop so I could go back to my job. I was worried… Did I do enough? I still had tonight to do more. I could sleep when I had to. I still needed to steal all the construction vehicles, and I wanted to try one more thing before I had to sleep… Shit, get rid of the seven-year-old first, then go steal vehicles, then try the thing I wanted to try, then go to sleep.
