The Beginning of The End

You might think the Latex beasts are the villains of this story, but in reality it was our own inability to see the consequences of our actions that led to this dystopian world. - excerpt from "Is This Our Fate?" by James Colin

Dr. Vulpr paced back and forth through a hallway, his eyes scanning the paper in his hands. Where did his colleagues source this from? He wondered. To his knowledge they did not have access to such high-level books or files. Lost in his thoughts, he did not notice the other scientist who had rushed by him. Only when the door slammed shut in front of him, did he look up from the papers. What was happening that had the other scientist in such a rush? As he pondered this question the alarms blared on. Red lights flashed on the walls, and an odd feeling began to bubble inside of him.

It was his intuition, telling him this was no drill or false alarm. He ran to the front lobby of the building, through the glass doors he caught sight of a raging mob. Many of them held weapons, and he could even hear the sound of muffled yelling, which was surprising considering the fact the walls were supposed to be sound proof. Then the sound became NOT SO VERY MUFFLED! as they broke through the thick glass. He flinched, their yells making him feel as if his ears were bleeding. trying to avoid conflict, he ducked down a narrow hallway, searching for a place to hide. The sound of yelling behind him drew closer.

People around me pushed each other toppling over each other while trying to reach the exit. As this happened I heard cracking above me, before I could process what was happening rock tumbled down from the ceiling crushing me beneath. People around paid it no attention just climbing over the mass of cement crushing me. I started to black out due to the lack of blood flow. I felt a previously inflicted wound start to bleed out as my vision grew blurrier, before everything went black. My eyes flickered open I immediately felt off. I stood up, finding my vision much worse. I placed my paw on the wall and felt my way to the storage area in a dazed state. Thoughts could not even be processed in my dizzied mind as I hobbled into the storage unit.I reached inside the spectacles box using my paw and took out some spotless oval glasses.

I put them on and looked at my body. I saw some white cloth on my black fur, probably my ripped coat. I realized the height of the situation when I noticed my small black dragon tail and black wings. My eyes widened, had I been transferred? I had returned to my senses due to the shock of being transferred. I placed a paw on my forehead. The once bleeding, aching gash there was now gone. I turned to the other boxes and searched for the lab coats. I may be an animal, but I somehow kept my mind so I need at least a lab coat. I pulled one out and grabbed a stray pair of scissors. Conveniently, they were just there. I cut holes in the back and lower down for my wings and tail. I slid it on, feeling much less awkward. I have to find out how this happened, and how to live with this.
