Chapter 14 Final zone

  The soft sound of feet padding against the ground resounded as Regina and Arron ran for their life. Regina threw a glance back at the colossal wall of blue particles that was chasing them. Each acre of land the wall passed disappeared, consumed by the endless sea of particles.

  Regina grit her teeth as she increased her pace. The massive wall was moving at high speeds as well. "Arron. How are you holding up?" Regina asked turning to her companion.

  "I'm doing pretty well. I think I can run for a while if we continue at this pace." Arron said breathing heavily.

  The two of them ran until they spotted a light cutting through the vegetation. It was a clearing, one clear of vegetation. Like it was ripped asunder by blades and magic. The two skidded to a stop as they took in the sight in front of them.

  Rynia ran as fast as she could. "Ahhhh! Why did the zone have to start moving when I was at the farthest point from the center!!!" She cried out in frustration as her feet padded against the ground repeatedly in a full sprint.

  Suddenly, an arrow swished past Rynia's head which missed her barely. Leaving a thin line of blood on her cheek. Rynia turned her sight to the right. She saw an archer. A brown haired girl with a bow and arrow pointed at Rynia. Another arrow was loosened and it missed Rynia again. The archer was running as she shot arrow after arrow at Rynia.

  Rynia ducked, rolling on the floor as she picked up a rock on her path. Why is my luck so terrible?! She cried inwardly as she spun and shot the rock flying at the archer. It his the brow haired girl square on the forehead and nocked her down enough for the wall to catch up and swallow her.

  Rynia resumed her running. "Damn it all!!!" She cried out into the heavens. She ran until she could see light peaking through the shadows of the thick trees. She jumped for it...

  Evelyn swerved, running between the trees. She swished through the air like a falcon, weaving between tree branches as she distanced herself from the zone.

  She gritted her teeth before she put even more force in her feet, kicking the earth like it owed her money. She shot forward like an arrow creating a machete of pink pure energy. The glass like object was the perfect tool to cut the branches in her path.

  Any vegetation she met would be cut up and left for the colossal wall to swallow hall and disperse into itself.

  Until she finally reached a clearing in the woods. A familiar clearing, one left without vegetation from constant fighting. She burst from the dark shade of the trees into the light...

  Amanda was running as fast as she could. She ran forward with as much speed that her legs allowed her. She glanced back at the fast approaching wall of blue and huffed. "This isn't enough..." She hissed through her gritted teeth as she turned her attention back to her path.

  Amanda Raised her hand to her chest, a soft glow took over the palm of her hand. A yellow glow that then enveloped her whole body. "Haste." She whispered.

  She blitzed forward at incredible speeds. Her eyes moved faster than her body did to weave around the low hanging branches and dodge the tree trunks in her way.

  Soon enough, she burst into a clearing in which she had been blown away from before in one of her previous fights. Her feet skidded against the vegetation free ground as she came to a stop.

  Evan was already away from the edges of the island, all he had to do was move a little closer until he was in the center. He spotted several figures bursting forward at high speeds.

  All before the blue wall came to a stop behind them.

  Adam was already on his way to the center right after his encounter with Regina. He swiftly made it to the center of the island with no trouble to stop him.

  He stood straight, his daggers in his hands as he glanced around. Doing a quick headcount. There was a total of 56 people who made it if he counted right. "Alright... It shouldn't be too difficult..." He whispered a smile spreading across his face.

  The zone had completely stopped behind them now. It had encased them in an enclosed area. Probably to quicken the battles between students and end the exam as soon as possible.

  Everyone's gazes drifted to the blue screen that appeared in front of them. Each having different reactions to the contents of the screen. Surprise, excitement, dread, relief and boredom?

  ping!

  Attention to all examineers present.

  Seeing as the exam had already gone on long enough.

  The school staff had decided to add and extra event with extra opportunities

  to gain points for those who wish to gain a higher placement in classes.

  "What do you think Arron?" Regina raised an eyebrow at the blue screen. She rubbed her chin thoughtfully as she glanced to the side. "Arron?" She turned her full attention to Arron then. The black haired boy seemed to be looking for something, or someone. He was completely absorbed in his search that he didn't pay attention to the short blonde haired girl next to him.

  "Arron? Hello? Are you there." She waved a hand in front of his face, attempting to bring attention to herself.

  "Ah! Sorry... I was searching for a friend of mine... I can't really see her anywhere here." Arron said, a hint of worry creeping into his voice.

  "Friend? Oh, I didn't take you to have any friends." She crossed her arms raising an eyebrow.

  Arron frowned. "I'm human you know." He grumbled before he continued his search, peering through the ranks of the remaining examineers and possibly his opponents.

  "Let me help you look for her! An ally is always good in these situations. We might face a situation where we would need as many people as possible. What does she looked like?" Regina looked up at Arron in curiosity.

  "Short. But not as short as you. Tanned skin. Curly brown hair. Look for her. I'm worried she got eliminated though..." Arron's voice quivered a little at the end.

  "Hey, by the way. Everyone seems calm..." Arron glanced around at the examineers. All of them were glancing around wearily, but none were attacking. "Well not calm but, tame." Regina corrected.

  "Obviously because we don't know what this next event will be. They're wary." Regina followed up as she surveyed the crowd as well. "You know... The ones who lasted till this point of the exam are the smart ones and strong ones. The lucky ones probably got taken by the zone." She grinned. "And a trait of being smart is not looking for trouble when it doesn't come looking for you."

  "Ah, so they're keeping each other at bey?" Arron glanced around. Nobody was making a move that would warrant trouble. They just throwing weary glances at each other, assessing their own situations.

  "Look over there." Regina suddenly jumped up. Arron followed her line of sight and saw a familiar figure. Standing alone and awkwardly looking around. "Is that the one you're looking for?"

  "Oh yeah! That's her. Rynia!" He called out for her.

  The brown haired mercenary jumped at the sound of her name. She turned around until she spotted Arron. Her face was surprised at first until a wide smile crossed her face. She ran across the clearing all the while shouting. "I knew you would make it!"

  "Ah, well... I guess I did." Arron flashed an awkward smile. Arron glanced around awkwardly, a little embarrassed about Rynia's previous shouting. His eyes settled on Rynia "This is Regina. She's been my teammate for the exam since the beginning." Then he gestured at Regina who was standing with a weird smile on her face. She was just staring at the two, not blinking. Her blood red eyes fixed on the two friends who now brought their attention over to her.

  Rynia could have sworn she saw an almost relieved smile on her face before it swiftly faded. "Ah, nice to meet you. I'm Regina, Regina Domina." She extended a hand towards Rynia with that same wide smile. She felt validated, extremely so. Hehe, as she predicted again. This is the best! It's exactly as she said it would go!

  Rynia stared at Regina's hand for a while, a small conflicted look flashing across her face. She turned towards Arron with a worried expression on her face. "Uhm... Are you sure she's not tricking you. I'm getting a bad feeling from her..." She whispered as she leaned over to Arron.

  "Huh? What are you talking? Regina is like the main reason I'm here. She's the one who planned our attacks and helped me gain a little over 200 points." Arron furrowed his brows at Rynia's out of place suspicion. Rynia didn't strike him as the overly cautious type... So why is she saying this about Regina?

  "Ah, I apologize if I made a bad first impression. People often steer away from me... I don't really know why." Regina's smile widened as she retracted her hand. "But I hope that we can cooperate without any problems as we are teammates from now on. Since you are Arron's friend aren't you?" Regina smiled.

  You don't know why people don't like you? It's because that stare... It's so uncanny, it gives me the creep... Is what Rynia wanted to say but she couldn't do that in front of Arron who was currently teaming up with the girl. Again...What if she can't help it? Then I'd feel like a douchebag... Rynia sighed inwardly before she flashed her best smile.

  "I'm sorry if I seemed hesitant. Sorry, I tend to trust my gut feeling as a mercenary most of the time. And for some reason I'm not getting the best vibes from you. Though, it's probably nothing." Rynia smiled and extended her hand forward taking Regina's in hers. For some reason, Regina seemed to smile at Rynia's mention of being a mercenary.

  "Gut feeling... I can understand that. I find myself often trusting my own guts." Regina grinned. It's what got me all the way to this point after all...

  Ping!

  The final event will begin shortly.

  Please do not panic as all the following is part of the exam.

  Regina's eyes darkened for a moment, a wide grin spreading across her face as she surveyed the several faces of the examineers slowly changing to curiosity and eagerness to know what the sudden change is and what it is for. Most of them will get eliminated in this event... oooh~~ it's getting real exciting...

  "What do you think it is Rynia?" Arron turned to his friend, after having dismissed the blue screen.

  "I don't know. But I hope it isn't anything hard." She groaned as she rubbed her back. "I got hit pretty badly when I was in a fight earlier..."

  "It's not gonna be easy." Regina spoke out from the side. The two turned towards her in confusion and curiosity. "What do you mean?" Arron raised an eyebrow expectantly. Waiting for an answer.

  "Well, this event is supposed to be the finale of the entrance exam." Regina gestured around her. "This event is going to be something powerful enough to eliminate most if not all the examineers that made it to the end."

  "You bet it's going to be something either impossible for us freshmen... Or something extremely difficult with an extremely generous reward at the end." Regina said as she smiled. Rynia looked to be on the verge of breaking down.

  "Oh, I see. Well... I guess I'll just have to be eliminated then. I'm not confident at all." She stammered in a quivering voice.

  Ping!

  Undergoing finale preparations...... Please wait.

  Every person present was shocked as the area around them suddenly shifted in real time. The zone disappeared, replaced by a normal looking sky. the worn out ground changed into a tiled floor. The tiles seemed to be made of strong material, not easy to break and shatter.

  Pillars erected out of the ground as a countdown appeared over all the present examineers. Their faces contorted in shock and awe at the scene happening in front of them. The final event has started...

  10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...
