Chapter 1: Jing Wanyi

Dragging a grass mat to the palace gate, Jing Yuanyu revealed the sign in her hand: "Palace Mortuary, handling corpses."

The two gatekeeping generals glanced at the rolled-up grass mat on the ground and said coldly: "Unroll the mat, lets take a look."

Jing Waner didnt make any excuses, and upon hearing this, she bent down and unhesitatingly untied the rope that was tied to the grass mat. Instantly, the grass mat spread out in both directions.

A woman wearing a palace maids uniform was revealed, her face buried in her hair, her body covered in fresh blood and the stench of death. When uncovered, the corpse had a pale complexion and no signs of breathing.

The two gatekeepers immediately covered their noses in disgust and waved their hands, shouting: "Get rid of it! Get rid of it!"

It is what they want to see, and this will make them even more afraid to approach.

Jing Waners mouth slightly hooked, she squatted down and tied the grass mat again, with one hand pulling on the other end of the rope, dragging the "corpse" out of the palace gate.

This time, the two gate guards even deliberately avoided them a little further, to avoid being tainted by the bad luck of death.

Jing Waner slowly dragged the sedan chair and walked for a long time before turning her head to look at the palace gate behind her, which was getting farther and farther away from her.

It is said that once you enter the palace, its like entering a deep sea, and every day someone dies inside. Some of those who have no family members to claim them are dragged away by Jin Yuemei and other low-ranking palace maids from the miscellaneous service department to be cremated.

The place where they were dragged is the "Luangang" outside the Xuanwu Gate.

  ——

Jing Wanner gazed at Xi Zi again, stretched out her hand to untie it once more, and then stared at the palace maids "corpse", from whose hair she pulled out a silver needle.

The silver needle pierced into the "corpses" neck, and the "corpse" moved slightly, but to everyones surprise, it suddenly opened its eyes.

"Get up, weve arrived." Jing Wanyu said lightly.

Only then did the palace maid open her eyes and suddenly sit up from the mat, and when she saw that everything was intact, tears welled up in her eyes.

Then he stared at Jing Wanyan, suddenly knelt down with a thud and kowtowed: "Thank you! Thank you for saving my life! I will repay this great kindness in the next life even if I have to be an ox or a horse!"

Jing Waner gazed quietly at her. Once a palace maid entered the palace gates, it meant she could never leave for all eternity. There was only one exception - those who were "dead".

In fact, she wasnt a rookie in this kind of thing either, helping the palace maid who had committed a capital offense, secretly escaping from the palace and finding another way to survive.

Jing Waner said lightly: "You dont have to work like a cow or a horse, just dont forget what you promised me."

The palace maid suddenly stopped for a moment, and then stared at Jing Wanyan: "Dont worry, I will never forget."

This palace maid was a personal attendant of Ji Zhenyi, and some time ago she had offended the newly favored concubine and was directly punished to the hard labor house to await death.

But this palace maid was also formidable and somehow found Jing Yuane through someones guidance.

Jing Waner put the silver needle back in her hair, turned around and pointed a direction to the palace maid: "You wait here until nightfall, then cross over the palace wall from the south side, blend into the night market. Theres curfew at night, as long as you can hold on till daytime, itll be safe."

The palace maids eyes showed a longing, its better to live than to die easily, no one wants to die easily. Seeing the hope of survival in front of her, she bowed deeply to Jing Wanyan again: "A life-saving favor, unforgettable even if I lose my teeth."

After nightfall, this chaotic tomb will be even less likely to have anyone coming, who would have such courage. So this place is the safest.

But for a palace maid, on the one hand, freedom was within reach, let alone letting her hide here until daytime, even if she stayed for a few more days and nights, whats there to be afraid of.

After settling the palace maid, Jing Wanyi dragged the empty grass mat back to the Xuanwu Gate. The two gatekeeping generals looked at her with disgust and didnt even ask any questions before letting her in.

Jing Waner was calm and composed in the face of these gazes, whether they were disdainful or insulting. Over the years, she had grown accustomed to them, just like drinking water.

She returned to the yard, patted her clothes, threw the mat into the woodshed and locked the door.

Incense was lit in the woodshed and after steaming for a night, the stench of the corpse would dissipate.

If someone enters the palace like Jing Wanyi and starts communicating with corpses, they will also come up with a set of skills.

Jing Waner returned to the palace maids resting house, and as soon as she walked in, she saw that the bedding on the bed was a mess, and when she reached out to touch it, the quilt was wet and soggy, clearly unusable for sleeping.

She turned around and looked at several palace maids who were pretending to be innocent: "Who did it?"

No one said anything, and someone even rolled their eyes.

Jing Waner handled dead bodies, and here she was treated with the least courtesy, her status even lower than that of a toilet cleaner.

Where there are many women, its trouble. Jing Yuanyuan turned around and walked towards them. Those palace maids saw her coming over and dodged like flies: "What do you want? Dont cause trouble!"

Jing Waner looked at them: "I didnt cause any trouble, I worked all day and now is the time when I need to sleep."

She quickly stretched out her hand and grabbed one of the palace maids, who immediately panicked and dodged to the side.

Jing Waner flashed a smile in her eyes, and her hands didnt stop. After the palace maid dodged away, she grabbed the quilt behind the maid and pulled it directly into her own arms.

She hugged the quilt and walked towards her bed, stretched out her hand and directly lifted the already wet quilt onto the floor.

The imperial concubine who had her quilt stolen shouted: "Return my quilt!"

She rushed towards Jing Wanyan, and Jing Wanyan turned around coldly, freezing the palace maid in place.

"I just got back from dealing with a corpse and I havent even washed yet. The quilt youre touching, think carefully if you still want it or not."

This sentence really hit the palace maids weakness, and it should be said that none of the palace maids in this house dared to really touch Jing Wanyan. The palace maids face showed a mixture of shame and anger, she stared at the quilt tightly hugged by Jing Wanyan, with both disgust and unwillingness.

Jing Waner smiled to herself, slowly spreading the quilt on her bed. This palace maid was the leader of those who didnt get along with her in this house, and even if it wasnt her idea to soak her quilt today, she couldnt escape being related to it.

  One reaps what one sows.

Jing Waner sat down on the edge of the bed, her eyes fixed on the wet quilt on the floor: "It seems that you can only sleep with this one tonight."

That palace maid gritted her teeth: "Jing Yuer, dont be too arrogant!"

Who was it that had gone too far in deceiving others, Jing Yuanyu turned her gaze away.

The palace maid stomped her foot in anger: "You think I dont dare tell Empress Liang? Youd better not be smug, or else youll be kicked out of the Miscellaneous Service Department..."

Jing Waner interrupted her: "Expelled from the mortuary? Really? Now theres only me in charge of handling corpses, if Im expelled, who will take over here? You?"

This sentence was even more damaging than the previous one, and the other three palace maids in the house also turned pale.

An older woman hastily came up and grabbed the palace maid: "Alright, Cuier, were all in the same house, dont make things too awkward."

"Whats going on?! Didnt you see her snatch away my quilt?!"

This cold night, without a quilt, is she going to freeze to death?! Of course, she wouldnt admit it was her who provoked Jing Wanyan first, or else she wouldnt have ended up like this.

There was also a palace maid who mediated with a smile: "Alright, you sleep with me tonight and well take that quilt out to dry tomorrow."

Nao Qiao obviously felt extremely wronged, but now Jing Yuanyuan had already fallen asleep on the bed, and she didnt have the courage to go and snatch it back.

Finally, under the persuasion of several palace maids, Cuier still gritted her teeth and swallowed this breath. In her heart, she said, Jing Yuer, you cheap woman, wait for me!

Although I knew every time, facing Jing Waner would not be a good deal. But this group of palace maids, however, always found new ways to bully Jing Waner, perhaps it was the hatred in their hearts, hating that freak who could always be with dead people without changing her expression.

Jing Waner knew that they regarded themselves as freaks, but she didnt care about these things. In fact, she was delighted to see the palace maids looking at her with a mixture of disgust and fear.

Only with a guilty conscience will one fear life and death. Among these palace maidens in the palace, which one of them doesnt have a ghost in their heart?

Jing Waner slept for a while, relieving her fatigue, and was summoned by Shang Gong the next day.

Liang Shanggong sat on the couch with two palace maids pinching her legs, in this miscellaneous duty room she was the old Buddha, and no one dared to disobey her.

"Yesterday, a corpse was sent to the execution ground and has been dragged to your courtyard. You should deal with it as soon as possible and do it cleanly." Liang Shanggong raised her cold and stern eyebrows, staring at Jing Yuane.

Li Shanggong specifically instructed this sentence, meaning that a fire burns everything away, not even leaving any dregs or residue. This is the cleanest way to do it.

Jing Waner remained expressionless: "I understand."

Li Shanggongs sunken eyes took a moment to withdraw: "Go, this time Cuier will follow you to handle it."

Jing Waner was somewhat stunned, letting Qiaoer follow her together?

But before she could ask Shang Gong, Liang Shang Gong coldly opened his mouth: "Didnt you hear me telling you to get out?"

Jing Waner lowered her eyes: "Yes."

She returned to the courtyard and saw Cuier with a frosty face, staring coldly at Jing Yuane.

Jing Waner also understood that Liang Shanggong had already told her about handling the corpse today. Qiaoer couldnt disobey Liang Shanggong, so she could only hate Jing Waner more in her heart.

"You wretched woman, freak! Did you say something in front of Shang Gong..." Cuier had already started scolding.

Jing Waner ignored her as usual, and she still wanted to know what was different about this corpse today.

This is the first time in two years that Liang Shanggong has let someone else handle it besides herself. In the past, there was a corpse with an unusually large head, and Jing Wanyu couldnt move it alone, and Liang Shanggong didnt even assign anyone extra to help.

And yet shes still clever, is she? Clever only when it comes to using vicious tricks on her.

So its because of this that theyre looking for Qiaoer. Its precisely because Qiaoer and her grievances are well-known to everyone, so theyre looking for Qiaoer and her together... in order to monitor her?

Jing Waner seemed to understand something, and Liang Shanggongs special reminder of the sentence "do it cleanly" also had an explanation.

She felt a stir in her heart and had some misgivings about the identity of that corpse.
