I looked through the search results that came up, and I discovered that Enyo was actually another politician who had worked with Helmer on trying to get some bills (none of which I liked) passed, and so this meant that the affair probably had to be between them.

  I then just searched for information about Enyo, and I discovered that there was a controversy about her because she had written in a book that she’d published about how she’d been involved in selling MDMA to various people in order to make money during college. She had been very clear in the book that she regretted selling the drug to people because it was often used as a date rape drug, and she claimed in the book that she had thought that using MDMA to rape people was more rare than it actually was and that she had always figured that the people who she’d sold MDMA to were only using the drug in ways that didn’t violate anybody’s consent.

  The controversy had made her election results closer than expected, but a lot of voters had believed that she was sorry and had figured that she wasn’t responsible for someone using the drug that they bought from her to commit evil nonconsensual acts.

  At this point I got curious if maybe she had used MDMA to get the affair started with Helmer.

  I mean, imagine this: One moment Helmer is having a drink with his coworker Enyo, and then suddenly he’s waking up lying naked next to her and realizing that he and Enyo are naked in a bed together!

  Maybe he puts two and two together that he got raped by her through MDMA, but maybe he just figures that it was the booze.

  And then Enyo wakes up next to him and begins initiating sex with him, and he figures that since they’re already naked and in the same bed he isn’t going to turn her down because he sees the ship as having already sailed.

  And so now there was one instance where he was raped through MDMA (but maybe didn’t realize that he was raped), and there’s another instance where he wasn’t nonconsensually high on MDMA during the sex.

  And then at that point he ends up keeping the affair going because he figures that the ship has sailed and also temptation can be a pretty powerful thing.

  But then someone catches him and calls him out for his affair (and maybe even threatens to go public with the information), and so he and some thug who he knows decide to shut the person up, and then Verona comes along and hears what’s happening and so she ends up getting involved and it leads to her getting murdered…

  Hmmm…

  That was a possible scenario, but there were obviously lots of possible scenarios…

  How was I to discover what had actually happened?, and how was I to gain enough proof of the affair that I would be able to credibly go to the news with it?…

  Hmmm…

  I supposed that probably the best way would be for me to follow Helmer after work, but I didn’t like the idea of doing that to someone…

  But, I mean, he was a murderer after all, and so didn’t he deserve to be followed so that I could get him removed from power?

  But being a vigilante investigator would probably be dangerous…

  I could end up in jail or murdered!

  But following him did seem like the only way to get hard evidence of his affair…

  And maybe I could even gain hard evidence of the murder too!

  Hmmm…

  I’d have to think about it more, but I was already feeling fairly intent on following him, and so I figured that following him would probably end up being what I’d do…
