Chapter 12: Conflict of Interests

  Gronti Mining Site, 45 minutes ter

  As you look into the mining pit, the giant monster that caused much of damages and destruction is as elite as an earthquake - and in such a short amount of time it took to take it down, the giant monster had already id waste to many.

  People duck heads and walk. Injuries mild or worse, the people either lie down or comfort each other. Each one wrapped of bandages. Each one being treated by a doctor.

  The look in their eyes, disturbed. Frightened. They, cower in fear.

  And in the pces where those that didn't make it to safety, white cloth is cover their bleeding corpses.

  Casualties ranged in tens.

  Damages taken: High.

  Recovery time: Adjusting.

  ........

  Alice sat down. Her eyes glued to the scene of people frightened......and dead.

  A medical doctor examined her. "Lift your arm up," he said.

  Alice lifted her right arm.

  The medical doctor pressed on her arm. "Ouch," Alice squeaked in pain.

  "Alright, everything seems to be in order. Just don't move too much, your hurt little but healing slowly. Take it easy." The doctor said. The doctor packed his things and left to see other people that needed help. "I'll be off."

  Alice watched the doctor leave. She sat and said nothing.

  To an end the giant monster was finally taken down, there was too little for Alice to say afterwards. Her mouth was empty of words. Her mind unable to make up sentences.She too was, in fact, absorbed in her own thoughts. Still frightened. What could she say that'll change things? Nothing. She had nothing.

  .........

  As if lost in her own world, Luna came close to her and spoke, "Hey, you doing okay."

  Alice saw Luna. "Oh Luna, you're here....."

  Luna sat beside her.

  "Thinking hard, I suppose...." She comforted Alice in her words.

  Alice's eyes and head slided to Luna to the left though returned for a second and a half. "Yeah, yeah," she said in some way okay, but really she was not.

  "Right....." Luna could not talk freely. She sadly remembered what had transpired.

  ........

  The atmosphere around them remained silent but not for the people that were injured, and the mining site that was being cleared from the chaos what the giant dead corpse caused. Alice and Luna sticked to their seats and watched for sometime.

  To at least lighten the mood from their gloomy encounter, Luna spoke, just after sometime of silence. "You know when the first time we met, you were timmed and shy, you couldn't get anything right the first time."

  "We worked through the years, you and me, no one had our backs, but we still preserved."

  Luna told a memoriable time. "....Remember the shopping mall, when they ran out of goods, we had to experiment on what stock we had."

  "Yeah, I do," Alice responded though somewhat stale.

  To make her remember again, Luna continued. "Come on Alice!" she spped her shoulder lightly, "You're the one that cooked, the food, I don't know where to start - chef's kiss. Delicious. 5 out of 5!" She excimed passionately.

  At a moment of relief Alice reacted. "Huhuhuhuh!" Alice chuckled.

  When Luna saw that Alice was now ughing, she switched her mood and asked her, "Hey, what are you ughing for? That was a compliment."

  "Compliment, that wasn't even a compliment. The food tasted so bad that...I-I even puked, just after one taste."

  Alice then went on to ugh. Her joy rejuvenated. Her smile contagious in her expressive attitude. "Huhuhuhuhuhu! - Et, ahhh, huhhuhu, wwaz so BAD mmmmyy mouth waz budndinhggg, huhuhuhuhuh!"

  After she finished ughing, the two came to settle their differences and saw a new light.

  "Thanks, I needed that," Alice responded.

  However, it didn't stop there, as Luna wouldn't want the opportunity to escape.

  "Here's something I want give you," she said taking Alice's left hand and pcing something in the middle covering her fingers over it.

  "What is this?" She asked confused. When her fingers released she found a cassette tape.

  "This is...?"

  "The camera footage tape," Luna said. But quitely as she didn't want being overheard.

  "How did you get it?" Alice asked.

  "Well, just before we ran, I swapped cassette tape before we exited the tunnel. I thought it right to keep the footage, for safety reasons....and personal reasons."

  "So what do you think?"

  "What do I think? With all that has happened, I think we should conf-"

  "We should send it to HQ!" Luna cut her before she could finish, knowing full well what her conclusion was going to be. She needed to convince Alice. This wasn't their time of sadness and grief; this was their time to shine. Thier time of recognition.

  "Look I know what saw was just not known off, but - but this, this changes things. We send this to HQ we'll hit it big!"

  "So what do you say? You in."

  Overcome with conflicting interests, Alice takes a moment first and ponderers. She bowed her head and raised her hand that held the cassette tape. She looked at the cassette tape with fixed eyes. She......had to make a decision.

  ~~~~~~
  A man in bck stood infront of the colpsed monster. He is the leader of the group that took down the monster he stands to look at. He wore a different attire from the soldiers. A distinct feature was that he wasn't wearing any armor - just a tidy and casual uniform, nothing much going on with him. All the other soldiers had their faces covered, but the leader doesn't mind the public recognition. He breathes well and does well.
  On him, he lit up a cigarette and took a smoke. "This occurrences are becoming too frequent," he said and took the cigarette off his lips with the release of a puff of smoke. Fffffffffff.
  As he stood there, a soldier spoke from behind. "Sir," he said and the leader turned around.
  "Ah, your here," the leader said and scanned what the soldier brought with. "....who's this?"
  "Sir!" The soldier spoke with respect. "This is one of many of the survivors that fled the colpse of the tunnels. He is the one in-charge."
  The leader took a quick look at the man and then waved a hand. He turned around back to monster and took part in his cigarette. "Right." The leader said. "Leave him be."
  The soldier understood. The soldier made his salute and walked out of his way to return to his duty, leaving the survivor to the hands of the leader.
  The survivor was not just such an ordinary guy. No. This is the supervisor. The one that made the call to leave the tunnel as quick as possible - saving as much as he could. Yeah, that's the guy.
  But why is the supervisor there, meeting the leader of the group soldiers that saved them, you might ask. It's not that the leader wants to congratute the supervisor of his bravery and courageous endeavour or give a toaste for good times, and drink until drunk. No, no, no, that would be ridiculous and upsurd. No leader of a band of lethal weapon weilding soldiers, armed to the teeth, will partake in such pleasure. Surely, not.
  The leader has something else he wants to know. And fast he wants to hear it.
  The leader turned as he stood there still, taking the cigar off his lips on his left hand, and blew the smoke out of his lungs. He spoke, "Tell me, supervisor....WHAT THE FUCKING HELL HAPPENED TO THIS PIECE OF A SHIT HOLE!"
  In his peak of interest and, a chill of fear, the supervisor saw the leader's anger. For what reason compelled him to silence, the supervisor had the urge to think and react. This person, although just like him, a human being, harbored wishing intent of harm, violence, and trouble. That's what he thought.
  Without a word formed into a sentence and the supervisor halt of saying something. It wasn't before he reacted strangely, but organized as he would finally let his mind speak for itself.
  "There was something in the rocks-"
  "What's that, I can't hear you?!" The leader said up close in his face.
  'How did he get so close?!' The supervisor thought. He was so close to him that he was again, halting what part of him to speak.
  "So, you understand, right?" The leader roughly said.
  "Yes. I understand." The supervisor flipped his face over and replied confidently.
  "Good," the leader straightened his posture and gave the supervisor a double on the shoulder. "NOWWWWW, TELL ME, WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED!?"
  Feeling silenced by the use of his intimidation skills, the supervisor had nowhere to go and went on to tell the specialist leader all about what happened in the tunnels. He first told what they found on his part, supervising the middle tunnel, the drilling machine, and the discovery of the rocks. He also told his own personal experience as to why he came to know of the danger of the rock due to prior or say limited access of non-disclosure information from his superiors.
  Having to retell this experiences, in clear detail, for the the specialist lead to understand was making him not want to think about it. The people he could have saved, if only there was time. They all would have been saved.
  "Another dud," the specialist leader sighed in disappointment. He yawned - ahhhhhh!
  "What are you - have you no respect?!" The supervisor spoke, frustrated, at his reply.
  In truth, the specialist lead did seem to not care. For a man of his age and work, there are plenty of things one man can see and feel regretful of. He's seen and done things what a normal person would be afraid to do. Like say, pull the trigger to your own.
  "Yeah, I do," the specialist lead said. He pulled himself to little to expin, "Pass the word around and don't get killed. What you're people got yourself into is no joke, your mining operation is closed. What you were mining into, wasn't a mineral deposit, that's just what the rocks mimic as an illusion for your radars to pick up. Fake.......Those are bellies of the ancient. A fucking, waiting dead trap!"
  "Is this even an expnation, what will the reporters, will-"
  Eyes of the specialist lead woke up.
  "What did you say?" The specialist lead's cigar fell to the ground. "What reporters!"
  ~~~~~~

  At the back of the van, Alice got to work and typed, transferring the data. First she had to use a different to transfer the data from the cassette tape. Their camera got busted, so no can do for that.

  As Alice got got to work, Luna couldn't handle herself. She was being a talkative. Saying this and this, she could she herself and Alice already.

  ".....Luna and Alice, the Big Discovery of the Century!"

  "What do you think?" She emphasised her point as she asked.

  "Yeah, I think so," Alice ignored her and continued working.

  "Come on Alice, we have to celebrate somehow. Didn't always say this was the big moment."

  "I know," Alice answered quieter than herself.

  When done typing, Alice spoke, "Okay I'm done."

  "Well, what are you waiting for, sending it already," Luna told her.

  It was just a single button press away to becoming famous. Alice locked her eyes to the ptop screen. She was thinking. Should she send it? Or should she stop entirely, and not do what she was going to do and hand over the evidence to the authorities? Given what she saw and what she experienced at first hand - people dying, people suffering, people too afraid to speak - she made her mind up.

  "Luna, do you think I should send it," Alice asked Luna of this.

  She rejected the idea of sending this to HQ. It all, felt, inhumane.

  "What are you taking about?" Luna shifted her facial expression from that of excitement to confusion.

  Alice turned around and faced Luna. "I mean, don't you feel bad about sending this footage to HQ."

  "I don't think we should be doing this. THIS IS NO RIGHT," Alice stated.

  For some reason, she had to turn down the offer. Although betraying her friend of her opportunity as well, Alice had her mind and heart at the right path. She had to stand by it at all cost.

  For Luna, she had thoughts of her own circling. But not friendly.

  "You do agree, right?" Alice asked.

  Luna raised her head and smiled.

  "Yes, I do!" She said.

  "Great, then we can-"

  "But why?" Luna' asked voluntarily out of curiosity.

  'Huh?' Alice thought.

  It was then to this point, it was Luna who was doing the talking. Her speaking sound almost sad. Her eyes looked like a dam about to burst.

  "Why do you disagree on everything I have to give?! Why do you push back when you know it'll help?! Why do I have to be the one suffering?! Me?! Why me?!" She said angrily. "Why, why, why, why, why, why, why!!!!!" She repeated over and over until she was done.

  "Why?" She said stly.

  Alice saw her friend in pain. She knew she was in the wrong but she was also doing the right thing. This interests covering alongside each other made her heart ache.

  "I know what you're feeling Luna, but I assure you this is something we have no right to get involved," Alice said trying to solve her friends anguish and pain. "You just have to trust me.'

  "NOOOOOOOO!" Luna screamed. She adjusted, depressed, "I'm not going to fall for this again!"

  Luna then ran up to Alice. She tried to push her to the side but Alice kept her defensive stance. She blocked her from getting near th ptop, trapping her with own arms.

  "GET OUT OF MY WAY!" Luna spoke imprisoned by Alice.

  "NO, I WON'T LET YOU!" she said, defeating Luna's escape.

  As the two escated in conflict, Alice found Luna's resistance quite the challenge. She wasn't that strong. Luna was. How long will she be able to hold her in pce? Her grib on her us losing, her strength depleting rapidly.What will she do?

  ....

  FREEEEZEEEE!

  Out of nowhere, the two friends were suddenly cornered and surrounded by man in bck uniform, pointing their rifles at them.

  "What?!" Alice didn't know what to make of this.

  "PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR!" One of the soldier shouted at them. Like a furious dog barking.

  Alice didn't know what to do. She listened and put her hands in the air, but upon doing so, she released Luna in the process.

  "I SAID PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR!" The soldier said a second time because of Luna.

  Luna stood where the ptop was and she bent over and typed.

  Agitated, the soldier called his man. "THAT'S IT, ROUND THEM UP!"

  By command, the soldiers took the order without fault and arrested the two girls.

  Both girls got handcuffed, arrested at daylight.

  When they told Luna to walk, and she did, Alice watched her and before she knew it, she saw the ptop screen: Transfer Completed.
