Late Night Interlude: The Space Between

Aurenya had gone to her room without a word.

Not abruptly. Not avoiding. Just... leaving space.

Now Rin sat alone in the kitchen, the tea still warm in her hands. The city hummed softly outside the window. A lone car passed below. A dog barked twice, then stopped.

  She hadn’t touched the lights.

She didn’t need to see more than she already was.

In the silence, she tried to organize her thoughts. But they wouldn’t stay where she put them. They kept drifting back — to the alley, to the blood, to that impossible figure that had turned and looked at her like she was the only thing in the world worth being gentle for.

  She had seen something terrible.

  But she didn’t feel afraid.

What she felt was worse, in a way. More dangerous. Because it was softer. It warmed her in places she didn’t want warmed — not again.

She should be running. Or confronting. Or calling Mika. Doing something.

Instead she sat in the dark, her tea cooling, and all she could think about was how beautiful Aurenya had looked in that moment — not just her face, but the way she moved like the world had tried to kill her and she refused to let it take her quiet with it.

And that smile, in the window days ago — the older Aurenya watching her from the glass. The care in her eyes. That moment had been real. Or real enough.

Rin touched her phone absently. The old message from her ex was still there.

  She didn’t open it.

  She didn’t need to anymore.

In the other room, Aurenya sat cross-legged on the edge of her bed, the journal open on her knees.

The moonlight cut pale silver across the page. Her pen scratched softly, the only sound.

I told her the truth. Not everything. But enough.

She saw me. And she didn’t run.

She stared at those words for a long time. Then kept writing.

When I came here, I didn’t want to be known. I only wanted to disappear correctly.

  But now—

  She stopped.

  Then, quietly:

She said yes. Even after she saw me. She said yes.

She set the pen down, pressing her fingers gently against the page. As if holding it in place could make it real.

I want to stay. Not just because I’m afraid of forgetting who I was.

But because I want her to know me before I do.

Just before midnight, Rin stood outside the guest room door.

  She knocked once. Softly.

Aurenya opened it within seconds, fully dressed, as if she hadn’t even tried to sleep.

Rin didn’t explain why she was there.

  She just stepped in.

  They didn’t speak.

Aurenya sat on the bed, back to the wall. Rin sat beside her, pulling her knees up, arms wrapped around them.

  Not close.

  Not touching.

But near enough to feel it.

After a long while, Rin spoke. Not loud. Not dramatic.

  Just real.

“You don’t have to be alone tonight.”

Aurenya looked over at her. Not wide-eyed, not surprised. Just still.

  Then she nodded, once.

And they sat in the dark together — not touching, not saying more.

The night moved on without them.

  But neither moved with it.
