Like Magic

“Wanna go for a ride?” the guy asked suddenly.

The girl looked at him in surprise. “Is that a trick question?”

He raised his eyebrows. “No. Should it be?”

“Hmm…” Her intense gaze studied him, which made him smile. She quickly looked away.

  Why is he smiling?

Such strong attraction from the very first moment… “So, how about that ride?”

  “Weeell…”

“You should’ve seen your eyes when you talked about her. Like she’s your lifelong dream.”

“Maybe she is…” the girl smirked.

“Then we definitely have to go for a ride. I get it—you won’t take my word for it, but I swear I’m not planning anything shady! I won’t even touch you!”

Ugh, what do I have to lose? Worst case, I’ve got a knife with me!

  “So, what do you say?”

  “Alright, let’s do it!”

“Catch.” He tossed her the keys with a grin.

She caught them effortlessly and slid into the driver’s seat. Adjusting the seat to her height, she leaned back. “Mmm…” she murmured with anticipation.

The blonde gripped the steering wheel with one hand and placed the other on the gear shift. Then she inhaled the rough scent of leather and motor oil lingering in the cabin, mixed with soft, pleasant notes of cedar coming from him.

He watched her with intense curiosity. “You’re funny,” he chuckled.

“Don’t interrupt—I want to capture this moment!” she said playfully, eyes closed, with a sweet smile he couldn’t look away from.

She’s like magic—the kind I desperately need. And her smile… it feels familiar. Strange, like I’ve seen it before.

Spellbound, he kept watching her—until she startled him by suddenly turning toward him and saying playfully, “Alright then, let’s ride!” She giggled brightly, turned on the player, and after flipping through a few channels, landed on a long-forgotten song:

Pressing the clutch pedal, she turned the ignition key. “I haven’t driven to this song since I was sixteen.”

First gear, gas. The car shot forward. Second gear, third… It all happened so fast, the guy didn’t even register what was going on.

“YEA-A-AH!!!” the girl screamed with excitement.

The car flew down the runway of the abandoned airport. The guy watched her in awe, once again catching himself thinking how much he enjoyed every moment spent with her.

At that moment, the blonde jerked the wheel to the left… and the guy was pinned against the side window with irresistible force.

“Harsh,” he laughed and squinted from the pain.

She gave him an apologetic glance. “Sorr-ryyy… Hold on tight! Now it’s gonna get hot!”

The girl twisted the wheel again and started drifting through the narrow lanes between the hangars. Old, abandoned buildings flashed by—many of them covered in colorful graffiti.

The windows were slightly open, and the wind played boldly with her snow-white hair.

Hitting the main stretch, the car surged forward, gaining insane speed. The guy was stunned. The girl glanced at his shocked face, laughed brightly, and slammed the gas pedal to the floor.

The roar of the engine echoed for miles. Adrenaline boiled in their blood, heating everything to the limit.

“YEA-A-AH, BABY! WOOOHOOOOOO!!!” the girl shouted with joy.

The guy laughed—genuinely, like a child. Hearing his laughter, the girl’s heart began to pound wildly. She took her eyes off the road for a second and looked at him.

His warm, happy smile stirred something unfamiliar inside her.

Why is it so difficult to take my eyes off his smile? It's just the adrenaline from the speed! Stop knocking so loudly! She pressed her palm to her chest.

After about ten kilometers, the girl began to slow down. “She’s incredible.” Her hand slid across the dashboard where the speedometers were.

  “So are you.”

She looked up in surprise and met his dark, deep gaze.

Did I hear that right? Damn, I need to watch the road!

  The girl turned her head.

She’s so easy to fluster… So cute!

The guy lifted the corners of his mouth slightly.

“I’m impressed. You look so delicate, but you handle this beast like a pro.”

“Thanks.” The blonde picked up speed again, then… “Hold on!”

The guy barely managed to grab the door handle. After another ten meters, the car suddenly spun 180 degrees and came to a stop. The girl turned off the engine.

“Is something wrong?” he was unsettled by the sudden shift in her mood.

She stepped out of the car and opened the door on his side, leaning in. “Get in the driver’s seat.”

“But why? Did I say something wrong?”

“No, it’s not you! If I drive back in your car, it’ll be hard to say goodbye to it.”

He paused for a moment, then climbed out of the car.

Only now did she notice that the stranger was dressed formally: a white shirt with emerald cufflinks, a vest, and black trousers with Oxfords. He unfastened the cufflinks and rolled up his sleeves.

The girl noted to herself that he was undeniably attractive: tall, tan-skinned, and in excellent shape. The wind tousled his chestnut curls.

The scatter of moles across his face and neck resembled a constellation, and his deep brown eyes, paired with that sweet, bright smile, captivated her completely—and refused to let go.

Even though she denied it, she was utterly drawn to him.
