Chapter 52. Truth or Lie

Hector left to report to his higher ups. He was dumbfounded about what the little girl could do with her System gun. The reports were true, there had been explosions, but there was no gas leak or explosive material. They didn’t need the explosives, just the girl was enough to be a war weapon and no one could take the gun from her by force.

He had learned a lot of things about their new reality, but the worst of all was that sooner or later the police force would be useless in front of these monsters. He really lamented to himself that he couldn’t get any Stats. He tried twice, and couldn’t get even one. Hector promised himself he would try even harder the next time.

Inside the gym and with the police out of the picture, Emilio could start training once again. He started with training fighting technique with Gabrila and he really felt the difference with his increased Mind Stat.

He felt that he understood what to do dozens of times faster than before. At the same time, his Body was higher than what any normal person would have, allowing him to control nis movements much easier. He didn’t even have a stamina problem with Vitality being one of his higher Stats.

The sum of all his Stats made it so that in just an hour of training, he improved as much as a normal person would have in several months.

In contrast, Amelia was not doing that well. She had huge Stats in Body and Energy, but her Vitality limited her and even though her Mind was higher than before, it was nowhere close to Emilio’s. She still improved far faster than before, but Emilio was doing much better.

During lunch Emilio finally received his new dagger replicas. They were of beautiful craftsmanship, but completely dull. With them, he would be able to train again with the daggers, without risking hurting himself and without breaking the weapons.

After lunch, Emilio spent most of the afternoon learning the dagger technique with both hands. Once more, he could improve much faster than before and he finally stopped hitting himself completely.

After that training, Emilio spent the rest of the afternoon training with the training dummy. While using it, they discovered that even if the version that was supposed to move was more expensive, this dummy was still articulated. They could position it in any position a normal person could move and it would stay in that position.

That made them wonder what the other version was, but there was nothing they could do about that. What they could do was use the one he had. Gabriela and Rafael found it really useful to change its position to show him how to apply different techniques.

On Amelia’s side, she also trained with the dummy when Emilio was training with Rafael. She trained both in hand on hand combat and also on how to fight at close range with a gun. For them to be able to use the gun without the clearance they used the System gun that didn’t make any noise. She used Gabriela’s gun that was weaker her’s and she only shot at the dummy just in case.

Afterwards, she went to the shooting range once again where she was almost kicked out when she used her own gun and left a hole in the reinforced wall. The problem was solved by KimTec paying for the wall to be fixed and she changed back to regular weapons for her target practice.

At the end of the afternoon, she also trained with Rafael in Energy control. With his practice, he had been able to push the World Energy to reinforce the daggers and to extend the blade with Energy.

Amelia decided to go with some freestyle control without her weapon and she tried to feel the difference between normal World Energy and Fire Element one, making it look like she was making a light show with fires.

The fire was really hot, but not to Amelia. She felt absolutely nothing from it, but for anyone else it would be lethal. They came to the conclusion that the new concept of Energy came fully under what earthlings understood as magic. The elements could be what fantasy considered elemental mages.

With this understanding they focused on trying to replicate normal techniques in regular mages fantasy as a fireball or a flame blast. They all worked, but the bigger the attack, the more energy it consumed, so they had to learn how to balance the amount they use.

After a successful training day, both teachers left with their husbands to have some alone time, while Amelia and Victoria stayed with Emilio and went to his house. When Emilio was thinking about what he was going to do with the two hours he had until dinner, Amelia came with an idea.

“Uncle Emi, could we try your Contract Skill?” She asked.

“Why would you want to try it out?”

“Because you got a Skill that made Tuor jealous and you haven't tried it yet, did you?”

“No, I was going to do it tonight.”

“Why not now? I want to know if it can be useful for us too,”

“Sure, but do you not want to play with Victoria?” Emilio asked. Both girls quickly became inseparable and Emilio was happy that the girl could have a friend in the middle of what was happening.

“Who says I don’t want to check the Skill too?” Victoria asked.

“Ok, let’s try it, what contract do you want to make?” Emilio asked.

“Let’s start easy, can you make one where we can’t lie?”

“Let’s try it, give me your hand.” Emilio grabbed her hand and thought to himself ‘I want to make a soul contract where we can’t lie.’

Emilio felt as if his thoughts concentrated and traveled through his body, they went into his hand and passed to Amelia’s hand. Once they left his body he felt like he was losing his focus on the thoughts that were traveling. At the same time, it felt really weird because he was feeling Amelia’s arm from the inside with his mind. Obviously it was not part of his body, but he was feeling it in some way.

The soul contract kept traveling through her body all the way into her head, where it stopped for a moment before entering her brain. Once in the brain the contract dissolved, but left some kind of link between both minds behind. He could feel that the soul contract was made with Amelia and that it had a two way restriction of not lying.

  “That was weird,” Amelia said.

“Don’t tell me, it felt as if my mind entered through your arm,” Emilio explained.

“I felt as if someone else was in my arm and moved through it. I felt I could have stopped it with either my Body or Energy though. After it reached my brain I felt like it was asking me to agree to the contract, only after I agreed did it enter.”

“That is why it stopped? That is some good information to have. We will have to test what happens in any of those cases.”

“What does it feel now?” Victoria asked.

“I feel a sort of mind link with Emilio about the contract with its terms” Amelia answered.

“Cool, can you try it out and see what happens if it breaks?”

“My name is Emilio,” he said, and nothing happened. “My name is—” Emilio suddenly felt a sort of strain in the contract he just made. This was the warning the Skill was talking about.

“Did you feel something?” Emilio asked his niece.

  “Nothing, did you?” She asked.

  “Yes, try to lie”

“My name is—” She also stopped mid phrase, “Interesting, that is the warning then.”

“My name is Raul” Emilio continued the test, he finished the phrase even if he received the warning. After lying, the Soul Contract broke and the link was no more but there was still something there that indicated the terms of the broken contract and somehow identified Amelia. That leftover was slowly disappearing but it will not vanish anytime soon.

“The link is no more, but I still know the terms and that you broke it,” Amelia explained what she felt.

“The same happened over here, should we try once more and see what happens when you break it?”

  “Sure.”

When Amelia was the one that broke the contract it felt almost the same with the only difference being that the contract broke without any warning for Emilio.

“Did you also become a lie detector?” Victoria asked.

“It is good to be one, isn’t it?” Emilio asked. “Now Ami won’t be able to lie to me again.”

“There is no way in hell I will let you have that contract active with me,” She decided.

“Fair enough, it doesn’t seem healthy for a family to build trust like this,” Emilio admitted, “I want to do another test. I want to know if it can be unidirectional. Are you up to do it?”

Amelia agreed and they made another contract. This time he asked for Amelia to not be able to lie, but nothing out of himself.

The contract worked and it linked their minds.

“My name is Raul” Emilio said again but nothing happened. “Good, I don’t have to make the terms equal. Ami, I want another test. Can you say that your name is Amelia Castro?”

“Why would it be a test? I am Amelia Castro!” She exclaimed.

“Because legally you are not, but apparently that is not what this contract considers, can you say that your name is Amelia Torres?”

“My name is Amelia—” She stopped herself once again. “Is it a lie? I am really not anymore? I love the System!”

Amelia started celebrating, with tears in her eyes. Emilio hugged the girl and when she calmed down he went back to the tests.

“Go with ‘Argentina considers my legal name Amelia Torres’”

This time she could say it without problems.

“So, is it about perceived truth?” Victoria asked.

“Apparently, this brings advantages and problems at the same time, but it is good we could test it out before using it for real.”
