Chapter 64. Getting Wet

  [Chapter 64. Getting Wet]

The travel drone descended with a soft hum that seemed to vibrate through the air itself. Searanox dismounted with practiced ease, his heavy boots sinking slightly into the muddy ground that yielded beneath his weight like clay. Before him the portal shimmered, a distortion in reality that pulsed with an eerie blue light.

Unlike the dungeon entrances he'd encountered before, this one stood unbound amidst the wilderness like a wound in the fabric of the world. No stone frames or natural architecture cradled it; instead, massive stones levitated around its swirling surface. Their forms weathered and irregular, not unlike river rocks that had somehow broken free from gravity's pull, their surfaces covered in faint markings.

He reached out and tapped the portal's edge, his fingers tingling with a strange vibration that traveled up his arm and settled in his bones. A familiar System window materialized in his vision, its stark glowing text cutting through the blue haze of the portal. Confirming the dungeon's designation and level.

After checking his TP and making sure it was full, the glowing blue numbers confirming his maximum capacity of six hundred eighty-one. He entered the portal. The familiar pull of spatial displacement momentarily unsettling his enhanced equilibrium.

The shimmer of the portal dissolved behind him, replaced by the thunderous roar of water that hammered against his enhanced senses, a physical force that vibrated through the very soles of his boots. Searanox found himself on a wide slick ledge of glistening stone, the air immediately hitting him with the sharp tang of salt and dampness, so thick he could almost taste the brine on his tongue.

Before him the cavern open up into a gargantuan cavern, its sheer scale dwarfing anything he had encountered before. Far above massive holes in the ceiling funneled brilliant shafts of daylight down into the gloom. Illuminating the mist-filled air in ethereal beams that shifted and danced with the rising spray, creating a cathedral of light and water. The path forward was not a single trail but a series of broad stone platforms each one lower than the last, forming a massive submerged staircase that vanished below. Their surfaces shimmering with a constant treacherous sheen of moisture.

He stood still for a moment. His enhanced senses dissecting the environment with cold precision. The roar was not a single sound but a chorus of countless waterfalls, each cascade from a higher ledge contributing to the overwhelming din that echoed off the cavern walls. His eyes traced the path downward, noting that each platform was a shallow pool, reflecting the dim light like scattered mirrors. Their surfaces rippling with the constant drip from above. The lowest level was a vast dark expanse of water its surface an inky black, with a single small island rising from its center that was barely visible.

With a flick of thought three recon drones materialized, their dark forms nearly invisible against the wet stone. Their lights briefly cutting through the gloom before dimming to a near-invisible state. They shot forward, their paths diverging as they began their silent survey.

One hugged the wall mapping the treacherous wet ledges, while another skimmed low over the dark pools. Its sensors probing the depths for hidden threats that lurked beneath the placid surface. The third zipped straight toward the distant island, a tiny speck racing through the colossal space. They revealed a landscape of constant threat, where the very ground could become a trap without warning and where the water itself was an obstacle.

A high-pitched chittering scrape echoed from the pool on the next platform down, a sound that cut through the constant roar with unsettling clarity. Searanox's gaze snapped to the source. His Magitech Rifle appearing in his hands in a flash of blue light, its familiar weight a comfort in this environment. A hulking crab-like creature, the size of a large dog pulled itself from the water. Its mottled grey-green carapace blended perfectly with the wet stone as it scuttled sideways, its movements unnervingly swift for something so bulky. With another louder scrape a second one emerged, its oversized pincer clicking open and shut in a clear aggressive display, the sound like a death rattle.

As he raised his Magitech Rifle the cool metal of the stock pressed against his shoulder, three assault drones and two offensive drones materialized above him. Their dark forms appearing in flashes of blue light that briefly illuminated the cavern walls. With his weapon trained on the advancing crabs, a System window flickered into existence beside one of the creatures, its text stark against the cavern light.

The violet beam lanced from his rifle striking the lead Shoreclaw Scuttler with pinpoint accuracy. The impact didn't merely crack its carapace—it vaporized a chunk of it in a flash of acrid smoke, showering the second beast in steaming fragments of shell and foul-smelling ichor. Before Searanox could line up another shot, his five drones opened fire in a coordinated volley. Their crimson beams intersecting perfectly. Energy beams slammed into the remaining Scuttler from multiple angles, its armored form collapsing into a steaming heap that twitched briefly before falling still.

He lowered his rifle, a flicker of cold satisfaction crossing his face. His drones weren't just tools anymore; they were extensions of his will, perfectly synchronized weapons systems that acted on his silent commands. He dispatched his drones deeper into the cavern, their metallic forms flitting between the cascading waterfalls like metallic hummingbirds.

As they worked, he allowed himself a moment to appreciate the raw chaotic beauty of the place. The shafts of light pierced the gloom, illuminating the spray in shifting rainbows that danced and vanished.

He mused, his eyes tracing the multiple sightlines to his ledge.

After ten minutes of systematic exploration, the recon drones completed their sweep. Two locations pinged with interest: a partially submerged tunnel mouth on the second level, its dark entrance partially obscured by hanging moss. And what appeared to be a larger cavern system beneath the central island, its depths refusing to yield to his drones limited sensors.

He dismissed the three recon drones, reallocating their energy to the five combat units still active. A quick check of his TP confirmed he had over an hour of operational time remaining. He stood his ground for a few more minutes, letting his drones thin out the local population before he made his descent. There was no path down, only a five-meter drop to the next platform. He didn't hesitate, stepping off the ledge into open air.

Mid-flight, as the wet stone rushed up to meet him, the flaw in his logic became painfully obvious. His boots landed on the slick, algae-covered surface with a wet smack that echoed slightly in the vast chamber. The impact sent no jarring shock up his legs—there was no resistance. He hit the ground with his full momentum, his feet shooting out from under him in an uncontrolled slide. His back slammed against the stone with a hollow thud, and his head cracked against the ledge a split second later. The impact sharp enough to make his vision briefly swim with dark spots.

A sharp hiss escaped his lips as he pushed himself up, fingers probing the back of his scalp. They came away wet and dark with blood.

No words. The grimace on his face said it all.

He moved forward with deliberate caution, each step a test of balance that demanded his full attention. His senses straining to detect the slightest change in texture beneath his boots. He made it less than ten meters before his right boot skidded on a patch of slime that glistened in the dim light. His leg went sideways, pitching him into the deep water at the platform's edge. The shock was immediate, the water swallowing him to his navel, its chill seeping through his clothes in an instant. He sat there, motionless, the water soaking through his clothes.

  Searanox didn't stir.

His eyes remained closed, his breath coming in sharp controlled bursts against the cold. Each exhale a small cloud of steam in the humid air. After a long moment he pushed himself upright, with a deep shuddering exhale that seemed to expel the cold from his lungs. From the air before him, a flat oval-shaped drone materialized with a soft blue shimmer.
