Chapter 4: The Hidden Vein

  ---

The morning after Kiri's evolution dawned cold and gray, clouds hanging low over the valley like a promise of winter's approach.

Aarav stood at the damaged palisade, staring east toward the goblin territory. Somewhere out there, Elara and Kiri were hunting, harassing, buying him time. He could only hope it was enough.

  [ AETHEL - DAY 5 ]

  [ LOCAL TIME: 06:23 ]

  [ MANA POOL: 9/1000 ]

  [ EVOLUTION AVAILABLE: 1/1 ]

  ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Nine mana. Eight recovered overnight. At this rate, he'd have enough for another evolution in twelve days. The goblins would come in eight.

"Lord." Varen's voice came from behind him, rough with sleep and worry. "The woodcutters are ready. Where do you want them to start?"

Aarav turned. Twenty villagers stood behind Varen, axes in hand, faces set with determination. They had volunteered for the most dangerous job—gathering wood from the edges of the valley, closest to goblin territory.

"The eastern slope," Aarav said, pointing. "Stay within sight of the valley at all times. If you see anything—anything at all—retreat immediately. No heroics."

The woodcutters nodded and moved out, Varen leading them with the quiet authority of a man who had spent his life protecting others.

Aarav watched them go, then turned to the remaining villagers. Farmers, mostly, plus a few elderly who could no longer do heavy labor.

"Today, we start building," he announced. "We need storage for the wood they're gathering. We need a proper granary for the wheat. We need to reinforce the wall with whatever materials we have."

An old man stepped forward—Marta's husband, whose name Aarav had learned was Corin. "Lord, we have no stone. No iron. Only wood and mud."

"Then we use wood and mud." Aarav met his eyes. "It won't be pretty, but it will be something. And something is better than nothing."

  The work began.

  ---

By midday, the woodcutters had returned with their first load—thirty logs, stripped and stacked near the center of the valley. It wasn't much, but it was a start.

Aarav worked alongside the others, his hands blistering, his back aching, his mind never stopping. He calculated resources, time, threats. He planned evolutions he couldn't afford. He worried about Elara and Kiri.

And then, in the early afternoon, a howl echoed from the eastern woods.

  Every villager froze.

But it wasn't a threat howl. It was Kiri—recognition, greeting, triumph.

Minutes later, she burst from the tree line, her massive form covered in dried blood that wasn't her own. Behind her walked Elara, looking exhausted but satisfied, a sack slung over her shoulder.

The villagers stared. Kiri was... different. They'd seen her leave as an old dog. They'd heard she was changed. But seeing her—shoulder-height, muscle-rippled, terrifying—was something else.

Tessa broke free from her mother and ran toward the wolf.

  "KIRI!"

The massive dire wolf's tail wagged like a weapon as she lowered her head to accept the girl's embrace. Tessa's arms couldn't reach halfway around Kiri's neck, but she tried, laughing with pure joy.

The tension broke. Villagers crowded around, reaching tentative hands to touch the miracle.

Elara found Aarav at the wall.

"Twelve goblins," she said quietly. "Scouts, hunters, a patrol. Kiri killed eight. I took four. They won't send more for at least a few days—they'll be trying to figure out what killed their people."

  "How many days?"

"Three. Maybe four." Elara's face was grim. "Then they'll come in force. The chief won't tolerate this kind of loss."

Aarav nodded. Three or four days. Less than he'd hoped.

"Your sack," he said. "What's in it?"

Elara's expression shifted—a hint of excitement beneath the exhaustion. "Something I found in the goblins' camp. They didn't know what it was. Just kept it as a... trophy, maybe. Or a religious object."

  She upended the sack.

A crystal fell out—about the size of a fist, pulsing with soft blue light. It wasn't like the void crystal from the competition vision. This one felt... different. Alive.

  [ AETHEL - ITEM ANALYSIS ]

  ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

[ ITEM: MINOR MANA CRYSTAL ]

  ├─ RANK: E

  ├─ TYPE: CONSUMABLE RESOURCE

  ├─ EFFECT: CONTAINS 50 MANA (ONE-TIME USE)

├─ USAGE: CAN BE ABSORBED DIRECTLY OR USED IN CRAFTING/BUILDING

├── NOTE: MANA CRYSTALS FORM NATURALLY IN AREAS OF HIGH MAGICAL CONCENTRATION. THEIR PRESENCE INDICATES A NEARBY NODE.

  ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━`

Fifty mana. One-time use. Enough for a small evolution.

But the last line caught Aarav's attention. A nearby node.

"Elara. Where exactly did you find this?"

"In the shaman's hut. It was sitting on an altar, like they were worshiping it." She paused, reading his expression. "You think there's more?"

"I think there's a source." Aarav was already moving. "Show me on the map."

  ---

They gathered in the largest hut—Aarav, Elara, Varen, and three of the oldest villagers who remembered the valley's history. Elara traced in the dirt with a stick.

Stolen content alert: this content belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences.

"The goblin main camp is here, about three hours east. The shaman's hut was separate, maybe half a kilometer north of the main camp. Near this ridge."

Corin, the old farmer, leaned forward. "The Whispering Ridge. We called it that as children. Sometimes at night, you could hear... sounds. Not voices. Just... energy. Our parents said to stay away."

"Mana," Aarav breathed. "The ridge is a mana node."

  [ AETHEL - LOCATION IDENTIFIED ]

  ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

  [ LOCATION: WHISPERING RIDGE ]

├─ DISTANCE: 3.5 HOURS EAST (THROUGH GOBLIN TERRITORY)

├─ FEATURE: MINOR MANA NODE (DETECTED)

  ├─ POTENTIAL:

  │ ├─ 3-5 MANA CRYSTALS (50 MANA EACH)

  │ ├─ MANA SPRING (+5/DAY IF SECURED)

│ └── POSSIBLE LEY LINE CONNECTION (FURTHER INVESTIGATION REQUIRED)

├── CURRENT OCCUPANT: GOBLIN SHAMAN (DECEASED) - NODE UNPROTECTED

└── NOTE: WHOEVER CONTROLS THE NODE CONTROLS ITS RESOURCES. THE GOBLINS WILL RETURN TO DEFEND IT.

  ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━`

A mana spring. Five extra mana per day. Enough to change everything.

But it was three and a half hours through goblin territory. The main camp had nearly two hundred warriors. Even with Elara and Kiri, they couldn't fight through that.

"We need to secure it," Aarav said. "But we can't fight the whole tribe."

"No." Elara's eyes were calculating. "But we don't have to. The shaman is dead. The goblins are superstitious. If we make them think the ridge is cursed, haunted, dangerous... they might stay away long enough for us to extract the crystals and tap the spring."

  "How?"

"I'm a ranger, Lord. Making people afraid of places is half my job description."

Aarav considered. It was risky. If the goblins didn't take the bait, if they sent a larger force to investigate, they'd be walking into an ambush.

But the reward—five extra mana per day—could mean the difference between survival and extinction.

"Do it," he said. "Take Kiri. Make them afraid."

Elara smiled—that predator's smile again. "Finally."

She was gone within minutes, Kiri following like a living shadow.

  ---

The rest of the day passed in tense labor.

Aarav threw himself into the work, helping the villagers build a simple storage shed for the gathered wood. It wasn't much—four walls and a roof, made of rough-hewn logs—but it was the first new structure in the valley in years.

  [ AETHEL - NEW BUILDING CONSTRUCTED ]

  ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

├─ COST: 200 WOOD (MANUAL LABOR)

├─ EFFECT: STORES UP TO 1000 UNITS OF WOOD

├── NOTE: BASIC STORAGE PREVENTS RESOURCE DEGRADATION. UPGRADE FOR BETTER PROTECTION.

  ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━`

By evening, they had accumulated 230 wood—enough for the storage shed and a little extra. The villagers were exhausted but proud. They had built something. They had contributed.

Aarav sat by the fire that night, too tired to eat, too wired to sleep. The mana crystal sat in his palm, pulsing gently with its soft blue light.

Fifty mana. If he absorbed it now, he'd have 59 total—still not enough for a major evolution, but enough for something small. A tool upgrade. A weapon enhancement. Maybe even the first step toward a Mana Reservoir building.

[ AETHEL - MANA CRYSTAL USAGE OPTIONS ]

├─ USED IN: HEROIC SUMMONING CIRCLE UPGRADE (F→E)

└── NOTE: IMPROVES SUMMON CHANCES AND REDUCES COOLDOWN`

A Mana Reservoir. A building that permanently increased his maximum mana.

Aarav's heart hammered. If he could build one—if he could increase his max mana—then every recovery point became more valuable. Eight percent of a larger pool meant more usable mana over time.

"Varen." He called the captain over. "Have you ever heard of a building called a Mana Reservoir?"

Varen frowned, thinking. "Old stories, Lord. From before the goblins came. The previous Lords—the ones before the World Will stopped sending them—they built towers to hold more power. The ruins are still in the hills, they say."

  "Could we build one?"

"With the right materials, maybe. Wood, stone, iron... and something to focus the mana." Varen looked at the crystal in Aarav's palm. "Like that."

Aarav stared at the crystal. One-time boost now, or permanent increase later.

  It wasn't even a choice.

"Tomorrow," he said. "We start gathering stone. We're going to build a Reservoir."

  ---

Elara and Kiri returned at midnight, silent as shadows.

Kiri went straight to Aarav, pressing her massive head against his chest. Through their bond, he felt exhaustion, satisfaction, and a deep, primal hunger. She had killed again. She was becoming what she was meant to be.

Elara dropped another sack at his feet. Three more crystals, each pulsing with the same soft blue light.

"The ridge is ours," she said quietly. "We made enough noise, left enough signs, that the goblins think their shaman's spirit is angry. They won't go near it for at least a week."

  "And the spring?"

"Found it. Small, but steady. If we can secure the area, we could tap it." She sat heavily, exhaustion finally showing. "But that's a job for another day. Right now, we need to rest."

Aarav looked at the four crystals in his possession. Two hundred mana, total. Enough for the Reservoir. Enough for something else.

Aarav read the display and felt something he hadn't felt since arriving in Aethel.

  Hope.

Not blind hope. Not desperate hope. Calculated hope. They had a path forward. They had resources to gather, buildings to construct, advantages to seize.

And they had seven to ten days before the goblins came.

He looked at Kiri, sleeping beside the fire, her massive sides rising and falling with peaceful breaths. At Elara, already asleep, her hand on her bow even in rest. At the villagers, scattered around the valley in their crude huts, dreaming of better days.

"We're going to make it," he whispered. "I don't know how, but we're going to make it."

The fire crackled. The wind whispered. And somewhere in the darkness, the goblins waited.

But for the first time, Aarav felt like they might be waiting in vain.
