Chapter Seven

It was evening in Topeka and Heather had just given her baby Rose a bath and put her to bed. Lady was standing on the second floor by the window looking out into the night's sky when Heather noticed her. Lady had always been a mysterious woman in Heather's family. Although Lady had always been transparent about her demon abilities, they only knew so much about her past. That of which lady was willing to reveal to them. Heather often wondered if she was more open with Esther than any other family member.

“Enjoying the night?” asked Heather as she approached Lady by the window.

“Night has always been a peaceful time for me,” answered Lady. “A time where I could look upon the moon and stars and bask in the beauty of God's creation.”

“Do you still?” questioned Heather. “Bask in the beauty of God's creation?”

“That's quite a thing to ask a demon,” said Lady mildly amused.

While they continued to speak Heather noticed the facial expression of Lady changed on a dime. Going from relaxed and playful to serious and stern. What for Heather did not know, but she wouldn't have to wonder for long.

“What is it, Lady?” asked Heather.

“Grab the baby and get out of here,” said Lady. “This is going to be bad.”

Before Heather could say anything more a black figure in a cloak crashed through the window and collided into Lady pushing her across the hallway and through a wall as Heather screamed and then ran towards Rose's room. Meanwhile, Lady landed on the floor of the living room as the black figure flew around the house hissing like a cat. Lady climbed up to a stand and glared at the demon.

  “Who are you?” demanded Lady.

“We are Legion!” cried the demon. “For we are many!”

“The one sent into pigs,” said Lady. “Damn them for not drowning you!”

“We must have the little one!” said Legion.

“You will not touch her!” yelled Lady.

Lady drew a fully automatic pistol and opened fire on the demon. But as the demon took damage it split into two separate entities. Hence the name Legion. Lady then opened fire on the second Legion and that Legion also split off into a third. It seemed like the more damage she did, the more Legions that appeared.

“You cannot defeat us!” cried out the Legions.

Lady led the demons outside and into the front yard. Her armor appeared out of her skin and covered her body made complete with the cape and face mask. Lady summoned her barbed wires, not to slice and dice, but to bind the demons together and keep them from being mobile. The more strength the Legions used to try to escape, the tighter Lady's grip.

  “Who sent you?” Lady demanded.

“We will not say!” replied the Legions.

“Then you shall remain trapped here,” said Lady.

The Legions hissed loudly and struggled to be free, but they could not break the binds of the barbed wires.

“Very well! It was General Zandu who sent us!” said the Legions.

Lady froze. It was a name she had not heard for hundreds of years. Why all of a sudden was he making moves against her family now?

“Why did he send you?” asked Lady.

“He wants the child,” answered the Legions.

  “Why?” questioned Lady again.

“We do not know!” cried the Legions.

Lady made her barbed wires tighter, but the demons insisted that they did not know. Lady ultimately released them and they retreated into the sky.

“Come here again and I assure you that a fate worse than that of the pigs will await you,” said Lady coldly. “Now leave this place!”

The demons hissed and fled from Lady. As Lady watched them leave a heavy burden now weighed on her heart. Lady had to protect Heather. She had to protect Rose.

She also had to protect herself.
