Chapter 35:Kaizen the Great

On a quiet morning in the Kingdom of Arcadia, an unusual stillness hung over the Black Spear headquarters. The echoes of the recent battle had faded, yet the weight of what had happened still lingered in the air.

Nico Sigmund sat in the vast garden behind the headquarters, surrounded by neatly trimmed trees and stone paths still damp with morning dew. He wore his black military uniform, its sharp lines and silver insignias reflecting the rising sunlight. Upon his shoulders rested the symbols of the Emperor rank—a title not yet officially recognized by the kingdom, yet one that his overwhelming presence had already forced upon everyone around him.

  He sat with absolute composure.

In one hand he held a cup of strong black coffee.

In the other, he flipped calmly through the pages of a thick book.

To anyone observing from afar, Nico appeared completely detached from the chaos of the previous day—as though the battle that had nearly destroyed the kingdom had been nothing more than a minor inconvenience.

A faint movement behind him caught his attention.

Without turning his head, Nico shifted his gaze slightly.

Elara stood a few steps away.

Her posture was tense, her hands nervously rubbing against each other. She hesitated for several seconds before finally gathering the courage to speak.

"May I… sit beside you, Lord Nico?" she asked quietly, her voice barely audible.

Nico continued reading for a moment before answering in his calm, steady tone.

"How many times must I tell you, Elara? You do not need permission to sit beside me. That applies to all of you."

Elara slowly sat down beside him.

For a moment she remained silent, staring at his profile as if searching for the right words. Suddenly, tears began forming in her eyes.

"Thank you, Lord Nico," she whispered. "For saving us… and I apologize for not thanking you sooner."

Nico did not lift his eyes from the book.

"There is no need for thanks," he replied calmly. "Protecting this team was my duty, and it is the reason I am here."

He paused briefly before adding in a thoughtful tone,

"You humans are strange beings. I still struggle to fully understand your emotions. Sometimes I observe contradictions in your behavior that are difficult to explain. If you were to examine yourselves honestly, you would likely notice it as well."

Elara looked at him anxiously. His words were both truthful and painfully cold.

"I know you were troubled by what happened with Zorua," Nico continued. "He belongs to your race, and he was your mentor. But you must understand something."

For the first time, he closed the book and looked directly at her.

"If you possessed proper tactical awareness, you would have realized that Zorua truly intended to kill me in that arena."

  Elara's eyes widened slightly.

"He was acting under blind rage," Nico continued calmly. "Had I not sacrificed my hand at that moment, his dagger would have pierced my body."

  He spoke with absolute neutrality.

"Logically, my response should have been stronger than his attack. That would have meant killing him immediately. Instead, I chose to incapacitate him so that he could reconsider his actions."

"That confrontation was meant to be training."

  "He forgot that."

Nico leaned forward slightly, his tone sharpening.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.

  "Listen carefully, Elara."

"You and the others failed during that mission. A handful of hybrid monsters nearly destroyed your entire formation."

"If you remain in this state, Kaizen will eliminate you in seconds."

His words were harsh—but not cruel.

"Stop allowing your emotions to weaken your judgment. You are intelligent enough to understand what I mean."

He stood up and handed her the book he had been reading.

  "Here."

"This book may help you reorganize some of your thoughts."

Elara accepted it as if it were something sacred.

Nico turned to leave, then added without looking back,

"My offer still stands. If you wish to discuss ideas or books with me, you may come at any time."

  Elara watched him walk away.

The despair in her heart slowly faded, replaced by a faint, hopeful smile.

"Thank you, Lord Nico…" she whispered softly.

  "You are my true teacher."

  Recognition

As Nico walked through the headquarters corridors toward the main hall, he encountered Jackson Raven.

  The two stopped.

For several seconds they simply looked at one another.

Jackson scratched the back of his head awkwardly.

"Thank you, Lord Nico," he said sincerely. "For saving us at the borders."

Nico offered a rare, faint smile.

"There is no need to thank me. That was my duty."

  He studied Jackson briefly.

"You fought well. Your confidence during combat was notable. Continue developing it—you may have a promising future in this unit."

  Jackson blinked in surprise.

It was the first time someone of Nico's level had praised him.

Nico continued walking, leaving Jackson standing silently in the hallway as he reconsidered everything he believed about strength.

  Recovery

The recent mission had been a brutal test for the Black Spear unit. The sudden evolution of the hybrid monsters had shattered every tactical prediction they possessed.

Had Nico not intervened, Arcadia might have already fallen.

But now the headquarters was slowly returning to life.

The greatest news came when Zorua finally awakened from his coma. Soldiers visited him one after another to express their gratitude and relief.

  Nico did not join them.

Instead, he observed from a distance.

At one moment, Zorua briefly noticed Nico's silhouette standing in the corridor. Their eyes met for only an instant.

  No words were exchanged.

Yet a silent understanding passed between them.

  The Celebration

That evening, the headquarters held a small celebration.

Long tables were arranged throughout the grand hall, covered with fine dishes and fresh fruit drinks prepared by the best cooks available.

Melina attended despite her injuries, sitting in a wheelchair. She insisted on joining the gathering to feel the warmth of the team.

Natalia wore a carefully crafted smile, masking her bitterness behind polite gestures. Her pride still burned at the thought that their victory had come from a human outsider.

General Akaria moved among the soldiers with visible satisfaction, sharing laughter and conversation.

Yet her gaze occasionally drifted toward Nico.

He stood alone near the balcony, quietly sipping his drink.

From across the room, Akaria raised her glass toward him.

  A silent gesture of appreciation.

Nico acknowledged it with a slight nod.

For a few hours, the soldiers allowed themselves to forget the horrors they had witnessed on the battlefield.

  The Shadow of the Empire

Far from Arcadia, beyond the reach of its sunlight, another power stirred.

Within the lands of the Demon Rift Empire, chaos ruled.

High-rank monsters hunted and devoured one another in endless cycles of brutality.

At the center of the Empire stood a colossal fortress—the former palace of the ruler known as Hades.

Now it belonged to someone else.

Inside a vast throne chamber swallowed by darkness sat the most terrifying entity of this era.

Only a faint crimson glow illuminated the room.

It came from the crown resting upon his head.

  Kaizen the Great.

Before the throne knelt a young woman.

Her body trembled as she bowed deeply before him.

This was Ruta, the warrior whom Kaizen had revived using his dark power.

"I thank you with every fiber of my being for restoring my life, Great Lord Kaizen," she said with reverence. "From this moment onward, your servant Ruta exists only to serve you."

Kaizen's voice echoed through the chamber like distant thunder.

  "I understand, Ruta."

  "I expect much from you."

"Do not fail me… or I will return you to the lifeless corpse I found."

  Ruta bowed even lower.

"I will never fail you, my Lord."

  Kaizen raised a hand slightly.

  "You may leave."

Ruta withdrew from the throne room.

The moment she stepped outside, the fear on her face transformed into a wide smile.

"Thank you, Kaizen…" she whispered to herself.

"Your power is beyond anything I have ever seen."

  "I will serve you perfectly."

  Rebuilding the Empire

Later, clad in her new black armor, Ruta entered another hall where the former Counselor waited.

He had recently received a new title.

  King Morgan.

Kaizen had appointed him as the public ruler of the Empire while Kaizen himself remained the true power behind the throne.

"Welcome back, Ruta," Morgan said calmly. "It appears our Lord has granted you a second life."

  Ruta looked at him coldly.

  "State your purpose."

  Morgan smiled faintly.

  "Very well."

He gestured toward a large map of the Empire.

"Kaizen has ordered the reconstruction of the army into a force of unprecedented strength."

"He also intends to improve the living conditions of the citizens to secure their loyalty."

"New generals will soon be appointed."

  Morgan's gaze settled on her.

"And you, Lady Ruta, will lead them."

A sharp gleam appeared in Ruta's eyes.

"I will execute every order perfectly, King Morgan."

  Morgan nodded in satisfaction.

"Excellent. If you require resources or support, you may come to me."

  Ruta bowed slightly.

  "Understood."

She left the hall with a confident smile.

The Demon Rift Empire was no longer a broken kingdom.

  It had begun to awaken.

Like a sleeping giant preparing to reveal its true power to the world.
