Chapter 3: Wake up

Darkness, he was floating in an immense void, his body felt... weird.

Not his own, as if trying to move was impossible, he could taste blood and his teeth felt sharp, there was something wrong but he could not identify what it was.

  *ROAR*

Turning itself in the void was hard, there was no point of balance or an easy way to move, but after struggling he managed to turn himself towards the roar. There at the farthest back of this empty void he saw a couple of eyes glaring at him.

"What?" He should probably be afraid, very afraid, the eyes were almost as tall as he was. But there was something that was preventing him from thinking straight.

What he could identify was that one of those eyes was blue while the other was pinkish red, the only other part he could see clearly of this creature was its white glistening fangs.

  *ROAR*

And before he could even think about what all of this meant, the teeth rushed at him, the sound of crunching reverberating around as he saw the vicuous maw close upon him.

For a second he could see the white fangs glow with white light, "Was it crunch?" That was the last thought he had before the feeling of something compressing at his abdomen filled him with dread.

And then... the sound of meat being swallowed.

  --------------------------------------------

"Good morning," What he found as he opened his eyes this time was not an empty void devoid of life. But a white sterile room, a singular nurse with pink hair and a pounding headache. "How are you feeling Hoshigami Reiya?"

"Oshiwhat?" He answered as he nursed the headache.

"He seems disoriented/ ? ? ? ? ? ? / Chansey! Chan-Chan-Sey!" And like that, his headache morphed from a pounding one to a we will split your awareness into three different ways.

"Ugh!" He was feeling as if his brain was boiling, closing his eyes, he searched everywhere for the switches and found them all turned on. A mental flick was all it took for the second and third to be turned off, getting the extra stress out of his mind, "...that is better..."

"Hoshigami Reiya." The Nurse said again offering him a cup of water, "Drink this please."

He took the cup and downed it in one go, tasting something... odd. It was not water, it had also a weird undertaste of medicine mixed with that weird energy that the fox bunny had used.

Closing his eyes for a second he noticed how he felt more relaxed and his pain was receding, but decided to clamp into that weird energy and isolate it for now.

It did not look good when the Nurse was attempting to drug you and calm you, but then again, perhaps that was how this hospital worked?

"Reiya?" He asked, "Is that my name?"

"...Is the pain medication working?" The Nurse asked, "You had been complaining about pain while they got you here for decontamination, and your Pokémon seemed worried about a wound."

  His what?

"The poor Umbreon!" The... actually, what the hell was that? The musical sounding ball of pink that had almost split his mind three ways was... to put it nicely, a ball of pink fur and fat. "She has been trying to get here since day one!"

"Calm down Chansey, let the trainer get his bearings." The Nurse placed a hand atop the... thing's head, "Can you get me the scanner?"

"Will do Nurse Joy!" The Chansey was it? It started walking? Was that walking? It looked closer to a weird egg that had grown legs to be honest.

"Yes, your name is Hoshigami Reya. A new trainer that just started his training travels." The Nurse pulled a red device, it seemed to be... like a square-ish tablet? Phone? It felt...familiar. "According to your pokedex entries, you started the usual route from Pallet Town and was scheduled for the Pewter Gym when the pokedex lost signal."

There it was again, the headache wanting to start at the back of his mind, there was something he wasn't quite remembering right. The name... sounded mostly right, but wrong for some reason?

"Right..." He said nodding and scratching at the back of his head, moving slowly to behind his ears where it felt right to scratch. "And what happened?"

"You tell me, what do you remember?" The Nurse asked, the pink fat thing had returned with another device and for a second, its eyes had flashed pink. That flash seemed to resonate with the weird energy he was clamping down. "Start from whatever feels more relevant."

  What felt more relevant?

"Well, I awoke with a killer headache in a dark cave." He started from the first thing he could remember clearly, "I heard roars and howls, felt something sticky on my hands as I stood up."

As he made a motion with his hand, both came clean, of course.

"It seemed to be blood, but I could not find a wound on my hands, then that's when I saw it." He pointed to his right, "The fox bunny."

The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.

"Fox bunny?" The Nurse said, confused, "You found a Lopunny? Or do you mean a Ninetails?"

"...I think he means his Umbreon." The round pink thing said, "She said that while he was disoriented he called her that."

"Chansey thinks you refer to your Umbreon. Is that right?" The Nurse repeated the words of the pink thing, that felt kind of rude, but then again, it was a round pink blob, so to each their own.

"Yeah that," So he nodded, "It was fighting this mean looking wolf thing."

"Can you tell me what Pokémon it was?" The Nurse asked. As she pulled a pen and prepared to write.

"... How the hell am I supposed to know?" He could not help but blurt that out, "It was trying to eat the fox bunny and possibly me."

"Did you not hear his growl?" The Nurse asked yet again confused, "That should tell you it's name at least."

"...Are you... all right in the head?" He could not help but ask, "Are you actually a patient? Is that why you parade around with this..."

"You may call me Chansey!" The pink blob said jumping a little.

"Thank you, is that why you walk around with this Chansey?" It felt... kinda fitting for some reason, but then again, it was one of the... oh, it was one of the things he could hear when he flicked the switches. Was that... "Wait a god damned second, are you telling me that when the wolf was speaking the weird 'Hyena, Mightyena' that was its actual name?"

"Mightyena confirmed," The Nurse said, writing, "You seem to be... suffering from a very weird case of selective amnesia as we suspected."

"Because I am the one stating how crazy is that you think this is natural." He pointed out.

"Because that is the natural order of things, weren't you able to tell this was a Chansey because of her cry?" The Nurse pointed out.

"Well she told me her name." He said pointing at the pink blob, "...It's a she right?"

"Yes, I am a female Chansey in Training under this Nurse Joy!" The pink blob said jumping up and down again, "Perhaps if we bring his Umbreon he will feel more at peace?"

"That could work," The Nurse said nodding to the Chansey, "Would you like to see your Umbreon?"

"...I guess, might as well thank the fox bunny." He sighed, "Are you sure Reiya is my name? It feels... off."

"We are sure, we checked your ID and Pokémon Trainer ID. Besides, the Pokémon's registry is to Hoshigami Reiya, and your Umbreon confirmed that she was yours." The Nurse offered the device to him and after thinking for a few seconds, she pulled a rugged backpack that was trashed and filled with rips and tears, offering to him too, "We salvaged as much as possible, but you will need to replace most of your equipment before continuing your training travels."

He accepted both the backpack and the device.

As soon as he touched the device the light on it turned on and there was this weird zap as part of his energy seemed to flow into the device.

"See? It recognises your biosignature." The Nurse smilled at him, "We will bring your Pokemon back as soon as possible, the ranger team that rescued you may come with the Umbreon. As we have not assigned her a new pokeball, you will need to do that too."

"Okay." Was all he could say as the Nurse and the pink blob(Chansey) left him in the room. "Thank you."

Both waved at him as they left.

He waited no time to fiddle with the red device, the pokedex. As he suspected it was basically a phone, a very advanced phone, but a phone nonetheless.

But there was this weird feeling that it was not his, the device had internal storage for pictures and videos, it seemed to record by itself what happened around him and categorize the things around him.

It had also an internal database filled with empty entries, a few had been filled and he went to work with those as he waited.

The first entry (Marked with a #0) had a brief description, it seemed that it hadn't been watched before, so might as well.

"Hello there! Welcome to the world of Pokémon! My name is Oak! People call me the Pokémon Prof! This world is inhabited by creatures called Pokémon! For some people, Pokémon are pets. Other use them for fights. Myself… I study Pokémon as a profession. First, what is your name? Right! So your name is Reiya! Your very own Pokémon legend is about to unfold! A world of dreams and adventures with Pokémon awaits! Let's go!"

"...The hell?" Just to check on it, he replayed it again, "This explains nothing!"

Well, it explained one thing. There was a nutcase of a profesor that studied these entities called Pokemon. And that he had spoken with him at least once.

There had some other files tied to that audio file, some explaining the word of Pokemon and how it came to be, a few notes on how the pokedex worked and what not.

The device seemed to scan the Pokemon around him and categorize them, or well, unlock the data when he fought or catched them. That is to say, he was not the one who would fight them, but those Pokémon under him.

The pokedex would scan the Pokemon when they came into the pokeball, and then after doing that, would give him the data of said Pokemon. Then he was supposed to store said Poké Balls and wait for the scheduled teleport.

Then said Pokemon inside the pokeballs would be sent to the research lab for further study, or till he needed them. In which case, he could get them in any Pokémon Center.

"They really love the word Pokemon huh..." Reiya said shaking his head, this was ridiculous, it felt more like a prank being played to him, "But then... are they all on it?"

He couldn't help but think like that, or would, if not for the evidence that had came into view.

Point number one, he actually had seen said pokemons and interacted with them, they spoke and seemed inteligent enough.

Point number two, for some reason, they didn't act or move by themselves but seemed servile. That made him extremely wary of them.

The Nurse for example, that Chansey was smart, and yet acted like a child. And was in turn treated as if it was one. He didn't doubt that it was capable by their own right. But the Nurse had dismissed it, even though the Chansey was the one who seemed more worried about his health.

"Here we are!" Speaking of, the door was opened and the pink blob walked in small jumps, "They bring your Umbreon with them!"

"Thank you, Chansey. You may return now.

With the Chansey came a grizzled old man wearing a red jacket, black pants, and a shirt.

"I'll leave you to it then!" The Chansey nodded and waddled towards the door.

"Hoshigami Reiya," The man said looking him up and down, "So...Care to tell us why you were outside the route?"

"I was?" He asked as he tried to remember what he had found from the device.

Within the data was a map that... or well, an excuse of a map, it was missing context very much. It did not include all the data, or well, it included a very clear route to follow, but did not elaborate on things outside said route. Almost as if they didn't exist.

"Yes, you were." The old man said pulling six spheres, all cracked or broken to some degree and placing them atop the table, "Roughly two days away from the route. Walking distance of course."

  That didn't... seem that far?

"And with only one living Pokémon left to boot." The man then put a seventh sphere on the table. "Either you managed to evolve your Eevee into an Umbreon and got overconfident... or your Eevee evolved under duress and managed to save you."

"I don't know what to tell you," Reiya said as he stared the seventh sphere, from what he was telling, these would be the so called pokeballs.

Meaning inside the seventh was the fox bunny... And the fact that the other six were broken... would imply that he had the other five Pokémon? But he didn't remember seeing any other around when he woke up.

"I don't know if the Nurse or the doctor told you. But I seem to be suffering from amnesia." That was the worst excuse someone would say, and this man seemed to be a figure of power, or perhaps some kind of cop type of person. The outfit did seem to imply that he was some kind of law enforcer at the very least.

"I see... Nurse Joy did told us that," The man nodded, "Alakazam."

"Alaka-" He repeated the word because it was weird, "The hell?!?!?!"

Only to be surprised as a... creature materialized in a flash of light.

"You called?" The creature...spoke? Whispered? The words seemed to resound all around them, and yet it did not look as if the yellow-ish humanoid thing had moved its mouth.

It's hands and feet only had three fingers, its face was pointy in a weird exaggerated way, and it had a very long moustach, this looked closer to a child... who was shortened and somehow could float... Also why the spoons?

"The kid says he has amnesia, confirm it." The old man said pointing at him.

"...If you are sure." The... monkey? Said turning to him, raising his spoon as if it was a weapon he merely stated, "Psychic."

And then, as if it was a wave of information he felt an alien mind trying to worm its way into his head, it was not like how it had been with the fox-bunny. This felt more aggressive.

It made him hurt, it worsened his headache by several magnitudes.

"He does not have memories available to him," The monkey said, "They are sealed behind a wall, do you want me to break it?"

"...Yes!" He said before the old man could answer, "Do it!"

"...You are a brave young man." The monkey said smiling.

"Wait, let us-" The old man said as he stopped to think, "DO NOT!"

"Remember." The thing stated as the old man pulled a sphere from his belt and pointed it at the monkey, he could see a red beam of light coming out of it as if time was slowing.

There was an expression of panic in the old man's eyes.

But he was not aware of what was happening anymore, his awareness was dimming and there, at the back of his mind he saw the void once more, only this time. There was a crack on it.

Before he could stop to think about what that meant, he heard a scream. A primal scream that was filled with pain and suffering. Wondering who it was he could not help but move his hand towards his neck.

  There he finally noticed it.

It was his own scream, his own voice.
