Chapter 9

Veronique slowly blinked and paused to stare at the title for a few seconds, before her face light up out of happiness.

“Ohhhh this will do!” she couldn’t believe her eyes, sure it wasn’t specifically for dogs, but how different could it be?

“Eh?” Yet just as she was about to grab the whole thing, her hallucinations started at act up again, grunting and seemingly trying to catch her attention, so she turned to see Little Drag, yep looks like she was just giving out nicknames today, enthusiastically pointing to a lower part of the bookcase where a twelve volume series titled -Comprehensive guide to identify and treat animal illness- resided.

“That could be useful too!” Veronique exclaimed and turned towards her maid with a grin “Lucia, please help me get all those books in my room” she told her as she started to take them but the maid wasn’t moving “Lucia? Those are a bit too heavy for me” she was already struggling with just four, they were quite heavy books.

  A bit Earlier

“Could you stop that!?” Lucia had been searching on the opposing bookshelf when Lady Veronique had this sudden outburst, which made her pause and look at her out of shock and confusion, why did it seem as if the child was looking at something? It wasn’t the first time today that she noticed such thing but this was the first time the redhead had outright reacted to it, she quickly glanced around to see if anyone else had noticed, but the library staff was nowhere to be seen near them and they were no doubt too occupied with their own tasks.

Suddenly Lady Veronique started walking off, Lucia followed after her keeping her mouth shut to lower the chances of gaining the attention of the staff and if the child suddenly started talking to the air again Lucia was ready to nod along and act as if she was referring to her just in case someone was indeed watching.

To her surprise Lady Veronique stopped right by a shelf which had the closest set of books to what they were looking for and was then lead to another shelf containing more useful information.

How was this possible? Lucia couldn’t wrap her head around it, she got so lost trying to make sense of things she didn’t realize Lady Veronique had asked her something till the child was visibly struggling under the weight of those big sized tomes

“S-sorry my lady I was lost in thought” Lucia immediately went to assist feeling deeply embarrassed about the mishap

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

“Eh, don’t worry about it” Lady Veronique brushed off her excuses “Let’s just get out of there before they find some excuse to stop us”

On the way back to Veronique’s room

“M-my Lady are y-you alright?” Lucia had asked despite carrying most of the load

“Yea I am fine with carrying those three books, what about you? Those sure must be heavy” Veronique asked concerned as the pile in the maid’s hands was so high that had to duck her head to see ahead of herself.

“My p-parents had me work at their farm, so I am used to t-this…but I didn’t…” the blonde started saying something but stopped as they turned a corner and entered a more crowded area

“Didn’t what?” Veronique inquired out of curiosity

“N-nothing, I-I am just feeling a bit h-homesick” but Lucia brushed her off and she was the kind of person to pry into other people’s business so she let the matter drop.

‘I hope Mos and Bos didn’t destroy my room’ her thoughts went back to her pups ‘What am I thinking about? They are still small so at most they murdered a pillow’ she cheered herself up

‘Yea I got nothing to worry about’ she reassured herself.

A reassurance that fell flat the moment they reached her room.

  It was absolutely destroyed.

All pillows were ripped over, furniture was chewed on and thrown to the ground, blankets and curtains were reduced to ribbons

Veronique was looking at it in shock, how could such devastation come from those two cute faces? which looking guiltily at her from a distance

“I-It will take a while b-but I can tidy it up, it’s not as bad as it looks” Lucia’s voice broke her out of her daze

“…” but Veronique didn’t answer her

“I will have it done in no time!” Lucia puts the books she was carrying on a dresser, then takes the ones Veronique was carrying and does the same thing before she starts cleaning.

Meanwhile the redhead starts walking to her dogs with the deadly calm menace of an unstoppable humanoid killer robot, one could almost hear the characteristic thumping sound playing in the background.

  “Phobos”

  “Deimos”

“What’s the meaning of this?” Veronique dead panned at them, looking at each with a murderous stare

The dogs pitifully whined and lowered their head.

All Veronique needed to do was to point to a corner of her room for them to get the hint, they scrambled towards it sat down facing it, effectively going into a time out like disobedient little children.

Seeing this Lucia half wondered what Veronique needed the books for as she seemed to be able to manage the dogs just fine.

‘I feel like she would be a natural with cows back at the farm’ she smiled a little as she continued to clean the room ‘just like he was’

  Corridor

Mr Jerkings was walking with purpose, to those who don’t know him well he looked just the same as usual but he was actually shaken up.

‘How could I make such miscalculation? That Lucia should have never set foot in this household…what does she want there?’ he thought ‘but firing her now would make Lady Veronique’s position within the household worse, the staff would no doubt assume it was her fault and we can’t reveal the real reason without causing a scandal’ he suddenly stopped as a thought came over him and he turned his heel going towards the training grounds

‘If I can’t remove Lucia, then I will make sure there is a trained eye on her all the time’

Hanging Jaw - the Dead with the jaw just barely attached

Little Drag - the Dead with just the top half that keeps dragging itself around Veronique in circles

Clashing eyes - the Dead with the eyes danging from its orbits.
