Chapter 84

  Corridor

Penelope and Lucia ended up taking off the majority of the beads and redoing her makeup to make it lighter, Veronique still felt as if she looked ridiculous but it was way better then before.

Now they were heading towards the Banquette, trailed by their guards which had been reduced from two to one just for this occasion.

Veronique was glad she would just have Kain as it was before, even if it was just for a day, but the fact Noah ended up as Rhea’s guard put a damper on the occasion.

She was happy that Kain was back at her side, but at the same she was worried because it was clear from a naked eye that him and Noah were still at odds, and the last thing they all needed was for them to start arguing during the Banquette.

She wished they could have worked together for a few days before the event just to make it clear if they could work together while the other guards would have been there to keep things under control, but Kain had been held up more then he should have, so it turned out the day of Banquette was the first time they saw each other after the whole mess at Kain’s ceremony.

‘At the least Noah listened to me and isn’t wearing that helmet anymore’ Veronique tried to think of the bright side, the former Knight sure looked much better without the helmet and now she could clearly see his red hair were a bit curly.

Still Veronique was silently wondering why they put Noah as Rhea’s guard, if they have lowered the number of their guards just to appear strong to the nobles despite the recent circumstances, then what it meant to have a former Knight as Rhea’s guard? wouldn’t that be a bad look? And it wasn’t her only perplexity.

As much as Veronique liked to finally have Kain around, she knew people didn’t like him because he was an Undead, so wouldn’t it made more sense if Rhea’s usual guards were split between the two of them for the day? Doing it this way would have also avoided the possibility of Kain and Noah ending up arguing and causing a scene.

She’s failing to understand the logic there, but the only thing she can do about it is to keep an eye on them and try to defuse any upcoming conflicts before they escalated.

Veronique wasn’t expecting for the Dinning room to be any better then the usual, heck she didn’t even know it was possible to make it cleaner and shinier but she found herself to be in the wrong.

The Dinning room was in other words flawless.

The usual empty table was adorned with several decorative centerpieces, golden cutlery was precisely put at every seat along with crystal glasses and finely embroidered handkerchiefs

‘Err did they have to change all the chairs?’ Veronique had noticed they had put another set ‘how did they even manage to make this room brighter?’ she looked up towards the chandelier and immediately got the answer to her question ‘oh that’s how’ several spheres of light where left hanging all around it giving a night sky effect.

All members of the staff had newer uniforms for the event, now that she noticed it Kain and Noah’s armor was polished and they had the Aurelia banner hanging from their waist, even Lucia and Penelope’s uniform wasn’t the usual one even if the difference was minimal, just some added embroiled detail that wasn’t present before.

‘I was so focused on my ugly dress that I almost didn’t notice’ she had thought feeling a bit silly

The Duke, Duchess Lucretia and Alexander were putting themselves in position at the center of the room, where they would be swarmed by the guests

Veronique and Rhea had to stand at each side of the door and greet each of the guests as they approached them, calling them by name and wishing them a good evening, but only engaging them in small talk if they did.

The redhead hoped she wouldn’t mess up, but trouble was already brewing

“Lady Veronique could you give one of your dogs to Lady Rhea” Mr Jerkings had asked

“Eh? Why?” Veronique was taken back by the request

“As Miss Amelia pointed out to me, it creates some disharmony if you keep both dogs” the head butler had said

“Oh you were going for some kind symmetric thing?” she tried to guess

“Yes, we were…even if I can tell some questionable decisions have been made” Mr Jerkings could be referring to either her dress, or the guards accompanying them, the redhead let a sigh as she made a decision in her head

“Then you will have to switch Lucia with Penelope or Noah with Kain, because Mos and Bos are mad with Noah and not familiar enough with Penelope” Veronique gave him options on how to deal with the issue, letting him have the last word on it to avoid getting blamed for the outcome later “I don’t need to tell you that Rhea is too little to hold the leash all by herself”

“Is it a necessary change?” Mr Jerkings had asked, not sounding too sure about it.

“If you want the dogs to stay well behaved for the whole event” Rhea wouldn’t be able to assert authority on neither dog, even if Mos had grown fonder on her then Bos

“Then Miss Lucia would be the best candidate” he made his choice

“Mos, be good with Lucia” Veronique told him as he handed his leash to her, the dogs understood they were about to be separated and whined “don’t be melodramatic, you are just going to stand a few feet apart”

Penelope also didn’t look too eager to take Lucia’s place, but Rhea seemed to understand the issue and didn’t seem too upset about it.

It helped that she got Mos’s presence to distract her.

Yet Veronique felt murder intent coming from behind her, she glanced back and saw Kain outright glaring at Noah.

‘Wait what is this about?! They were looking a bit pissed at each other earlier, but not this much’ Veronique didn’t know what to make of this development ‘what’s going on?’
