Chapter 8

The door to the tavern had a bell that rang once it was opened. Inside was a woman in her late thirties who seemed to be the tavern keeper of this establishment, busying taking orders from all the various patrons within the tavern’s interior.

“Welcome. Please take a seat and we’ll be right with you,” the tavern keeper said as Miri entered, only to see her plop down onto the wooden floor face down, reacting with an expression of slight startlement. “Umm…are you alright, miss?”

“Hungry…” Miri murmured weakly, her hand reaching up to the tavern counter in a way similar to a zombie rising from their grave. “So…hungry…”

While she was lying there, almost half-dead, a random cat came by—most likely the infamous calico cat that went by the name of Maneki who was the namesake of this tavern—and climbed up onto her head before curling up into a small furball, treating Miri’s head as nothing more than a warm cushion. And you know what? Miri couldn't even be mad at the cat. Cats will always be catting, am I right?

After purchasing some food from the tavern and chowing down with ravenous hunger, Miri felt her energy restored to full. She ordered a loaf of bread, some vegetable cream soup, and some sort of berry juice—all of which she found to be quite delicious. Was the taste of the food due to her nearly starving to death or was it actually just that delicious? Regardless, she had already spent 20 out of her 100 gold in buying that food. If she wants to continue affording good food, she’ll have to find some good paying work.

“Say, you wouldn’t know of any work around here, do you?” Miri asked the tavern keeper.

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

“What? You mean like mercenary work?” the tavern keeper replied as she was in the process of leisurely cleaning a mug with a rag. “There’s a notice board over there if you’re interested.”

Miri turned around to look at where the tavern keeper was indicating. Indeed, there was a notice board of some kind right at one of the walls—one that’s littered with a myriad of notices on various jobs.

Of course, Miri already had a good idea of where the notice board was as she had played the game before. However, she wasn’t sure how different the game version of this world would be from the isekai version so it’s better to make sure by asking the locals just in case.

Besides, it’s kinda fun roleplaying as a person who’s just starting out as a novice adventurer, ready for a brand new start. The magic of the roleplaying would be kinda ruined if you were to rely on every bit of your knowledge from your previous playthroughs of the game.

The redheaded mage took a moment to study the various jobs available to her. Since she’s just starting out, she’d want to take jobs that were not too difficult for her while also able to earn her a good amount of money. In other words, it should be the right balance of low-risk, high reward—enough to quickly earn her a decent amount of funds to start out with.

Ultimately, she went with a rune-hunting job that caught her eye. These types of jobs were usually high-paying enough while still offering a relatively low amount of monster encounters.

The core crux of this job was usually just to locate an ancient rune within a particular dungeon. On occasion, if she played her cards right, she barely had to fight any monsters at all. Because of her previous experience with the game, she’d memorized all of the shortcuts through pretty much all of the dungeons in order to get to the rune quickly while doing the bare minimum of fighting. And even if the dungeons were somehow arranged differently in this world, she’s fairly confident in her ability to adapt accordingly.

After grabbing that particular job notice from the notice board, Miri began setting off to hunt down that rune.
