Chapter 2: The First Hunt
The hallway was a charnel house.
Bright stood in his doorway, knife gripped so tight his knuckles had gone white, trying to process what he was seeing. The emergency lights bathed everything in sickly red, turning the blood—and there was so much blood—into something almost black.
Mr. Patel's body lay crumpled against the wall opposite Bright's door. Or what was left of it. The creature had been efficient. Bright forced himself to look away, swallowing hard against the bile rising in his throat.
The creature itself was gone, but he could hear others. The building was full of sounds that had no place in reality—clicking, chittering, wet sliding noises that made his skin crawl.
A notification appeared:
QUEST UPDATE: SURVIVE THE FIRST NIGHT
Time Remaining: 8 hours, 47 minutes
Enemies Nearby: 3
Recommended Action: Hide or Fight
"Three," Bright whispered. "Fuck."
He could go back inside. Barricade the door. Hope they didn't notice him. But that wouldn't solve his problem. Cherry's battery was draining, and when the power came back on—if it came back on—he needed to survive long enough to charge her.
More than that, the notification had been clear: defeating enemies granted XP. If he wanted to protect Cherry, he needed to get stronger.
Which meant he needed to hunt.
The thought was insane. He was a digital marketer, for fuck's sake. The most violent thing he'd done in years was aggressively click through spam emails. But as he stood there, listening to the sounds of people dying in other flats, something cold and hard settled in his chest.
He'd do whatever it took.
For Cherry.
Bright stepped into the hallway, moving as quietly as he could. The carpet was soaked with blood, squelching under his feet. He tried not to think about whose blood it was.
The building was a typical London conversion—three floors, eight flats per floor, narrow hallways with doors on either side. Bright's flat was 3F, near the end of the hall. The stairs were at the other end, past at least four other doors.
A sound to his left made him freeze. Clicking. Getting closer.
Bright pressed himself against the wall, knife raised, heart hammering so hard he was sure the creature would hear it.
The thing rounded the corner.
It was like the one he'd seen before, but smaller—maybe the size of a medium dog rather than a large one. Same segmented body, same too-many legs, same nightmare head of mandibles and eyes.
A notification appeared:
ENEMY IDENTIFIED: Mana Spawn (Juvenile)
Level: 1
HP: 30/30
Threat Level: Low
Weakness: Soft underbelly between segments
The creature's clustered eyes fixed on him. It made a sound like metal scraping on metal.
Then it charged.
Bright had maybe two seconds to react. His body moved on instinct—or maybe the System was helping, he didn't know—and he sidestepped, slashing with the knife as the creature passed.
The blade scraped across its chitinous armour, barely leaving a mark.
ATTACK: MISS (Armor deflection)
"Shit!" Bright scrambled backward as the creature wheeled around for another pass.
Soft underbelly. The notification had said soft underbelly.
The creature charged again. This time Bright didn't try to dodge. He dropped to one knee, letting the thing's momentum carry it over him, and thrust upward with the knife.
The blade sank into soft flesh between the segments. The creature's screech was like nails on a chalkboard amplified a thousand times.
CRITICAL HIT! 15 Damage!
The creature thrashed, its legs scrabbling for purchase, mandibles snapping inches from Bright's face. He held onto the knife, twisting and pushing deeper.
15 Damage!
The thrashing intensified. One of the creature's legs caught Bright across the cheek, its sharp edge opening a gash that immediately began bleeding.
-5 HP
HP: 95/100
Pain exploded across his face, but Bright didn't let go. He couldn't. If he did, if this thing got away, it might go into his flat. Might hurt Cherry.
"Die!" he snarled, putting all his weight behind the knife and driving it deeper into the creature's body.
5 Damage!
The creature's movements became spastic, uncoordinated. Black ichor poured from the wound, burning where it touched Bright's skin.
-2 HP (Acid damage)
HP: 93/100
"Fuck!" Bright yanked the knife out and stabbed again, and again, and again, until the creature finally went still.
ENEMY DEFEATED: Mana Spawn (Juvenile)
+50 XP
+1 Mana Crystal (Inferior)
The creature's body began to dissolve, breaking down into motes of light that faded into nothing. Within seconds, nothing remained except a small, cloudy crystal about the size of a marble and a lot of black ichor staining the carpet.
Bright grabbed the crystal—warm to the touch—and a new notification appeared:
ITEM: Mana Crystal (Inferior)
Can be consumed or sold to System Shop
He pocketed the crystal and checked his status. A thought brought up his character sheet:
NAME: Brighton Nokks
LEVEL: 1 (50/100 XP to Level 2)
HP: 93/100
MP: 50/50

He was halfway to level two already. The thought felt surreal.
A sound from down the hall snapped him back to reality. More clicking. More chittering.
The notification had said three enemies nearby. He'd killed one.
Two to go.
Bright wiped the ichor off his knife as best he could—the blade was already pitted where the acid had touched it—and moved deeper into the hallway.
He found the second creature in the stairwell. This one was larger—maybe level two or three—feeding on something that had tried to escape down the stairs.
Bright didn't let himself look too closely at what it was feeding on.
ENEMY IDENTIFIED: Mana Spawn
Level: 2
HP: 50/50
Threat Level: Moderate
The creature noticed him and abandoned its meal, turning to face him with that horrible clicking sound.
Bright's mind raced. The first one had been smaller, weaker—and it had nearly killed him. This one was bigger, stronger, and he was already injured.
But he needed the XP.
He needed to get stronger.
For Cherry.
The creature charged. Faster than the first one. Bright barely managed to dodge, slashing at its side as it passed. Again, the blade just scraped off armour.
ATTACK: MISS (Armor deflection)
The creature wheeled around in the narrow stairwell, and Bright realized his mistake. He'd let it get between him and the exit. If he ran now, it would catch him from behind.
He had to fight.
The creature lunged, mandibles snapping. Bright threw himself to the side and hit the wall hard, stars exploding in his vision. He managed to keep hold of the knife.
-3 HP (Impact damage)
HP: 90/100
The creature was turning again. Bright saw his chance—its underbelly was exposed as it maneuvered in the tight space.
He lunged forward, driving the knife up between the segments with all his strength.
CRITICAL HIT! 15 Damage!
The creature screeched and reared back. Bright went with it, holding onto the knife, using his weight to drive it deeper.
5 Damage!
They crashed against the stairwell railing. For a terrifying moment, Bright thought they were going over. But the railing held, and he braced himself, twisting the knife.
5 Damage!
The creature's legs flailed wildly now, catching Bright across the arms, the chest, the face. Each hit felt like being slashed with razors.
-4 HP
-6 HP
-5 HP
HP: 75/100
But Bright didn't let go. Couldn't let go. He thought of Cherry lying in his bed, her heartbeat motor ticking down. Thought of her glass eyes staring at the ceiling, trusting him to keep her safe.
"Arghhh!" he roared, and yanked the knife sideways, opening the creature's underbelly like a zipper.
Black ichor poured out, drenching him. It burned everywhere it touched.
-8 HP (Acid damage)
HP: 67/100
But the creature was dying. Its movements became weak, spastic. Then it went still.
ENEMY DEFEATED: Mana Spawn
+75 XP
+1 Mana Crystal (Inferior)
LEVEL UP!
The notification came with a sensation unlike anything Bright had ever felt. Energy poured into him, washing away the pain, healing his wounds, filling him with strength.
LEVEL UP! You are now Level 2!
HP restored
+5 HP (New Maximum: 105)
+5 MP (New Maximum: 55)
+1 To all Stat Points
New Skill Available!
Bright sagged against the wall, panting. His HP had jumped back to 105, and he felt... good. Better than good. Stronger. Faster. More alive than he'd ever felt.
He grabbed the second mana crystal and checked his status:
BRIGHT NOKKS

A new notification appeared:
SKILL SELECTION AVAILABLE

2. Danger Sense (Passive): Gain awareness of hostile intent.
3. Quick Step (Active): Instantly move up to 3 meters in any direction. Cost: 5 MP. Cooldown: 10 seconds.
Bright weighed his options. Power Strike would help him kill things faster. Quick Step would help him dodge. But Danger Sense...
If he could sense danger before it reached him, he could protect Cherry better. He'd know if something was approaching his flat.
He selected Danger Sense.
SKILL ACQUIRED: Danger Sense
Immediately, his awareness expanded. He could feel... presences. Hostile ones. One was close—very close—just around the corner at the top of the stairs.
The third creature.
Bright gripped his knife—the durability was down to 8/15 now, the blade pitted and corroded—and started up the stairs.
He found the third Mana Spawn on the third-floor landing, right outside his hallway. It was the same size as the first one he'd killed, scratching at a door.
Mrs. Chen's door.
He could hear her inside, crying, begging in Mandarin for it to go away.
The creature's attention snapped to Bright as he emerged from the stairwell.
ENEMY IDENTIFIED: Mana Spawn (Juvenile)
Level: 1
HP: 30/30
This time, Bright didn't hesitate. He charged, and the creature charged back, and they met in the middle of the hallway.
But Bright was level two now. Stronger. Faster. His knife found the soft underbelly on the first strike.
CRITICAL HIT! 15 Damage!
The creature screeched and tried to pull away, but Bright followed, stabbing again.
CRITICAL HIT! 15 Damage!
The creature collapsed, dissolving into light.
ENEMY DEFEATED: Mana Spawn (Juvenile)
+50 XP
+1 Mana Crystal (Inferior)
QUEST COMPLETE: SURVIVE THE FIRST NIGHT
Wait, what? It's only been 23 minutes. Verifying...
ERROR: Quest completion condition not met. Quest continues. Sorry.
Bright almost laughed at the absurdity of the System apparently glitching out. But the laughter died in his throat as his Danger Sense suddenly flared.
More presences. Lots of them. Coming up the stairs.
"Shit."
He ran to his door, fumbling with his keys. Behind him, he could hear them—a dozen or more of those clicking, chittering nightmares flooding up the stairwell.
He got the door open, threw himself inside, and slammed it shut, engaging both locks and the chain.
Bright backed away, knife raised, his eyes finding Cherry.
She was exactly as he'd left her, lying on the bed, beautiful and serene. Her heartbeat motor pulsed steadily.
Thump-thump. Thump-thump.
Bright looked at his knife. Durability: 6/15. Maybe two or three more kills before it broke completely.
He looked at his status. Level 2. 125/200 XP to level three.
He looked at Cherry.
And he made a decision.
He couldn't just defend. Couldn't just hide and hope. He needed to get stronger, faster. Needed to level up enough that he could venture out, find batteries, find a way to keep Cherry's heart beating.
Bright moved to the window and looked out. The street below was chaos. Fires burned in several buildings. Cars lay overturned. And everywhere, everywhere, were the creatures.
But he also saw something else. People. Survivors. Some fought, some ran, but they were out there.
And if they could survive, so could he.
For Cherry.
Always for Cherry.
Bright turned back to the bed and knelt beside her. He pressed the button on her back.
"I love you, Bright," her tinny voice said.
"I love you too," he whispered, kissing her forehead. "I'm going to keep you safe. I promise."
He stood, gripping his damaged knife, and looked at the door. The creatures were still out there, still trying to get in.
But they'd get tired eventually. Or they'd find easier prey.
And when they did, Bright would go back out.
He'd hunt. He'd kill. He'd level up.
He'd do whatever it took to keep Cherry's heart beating.
Because in a world gone mad, in a reality that had twisted into a nightmare, Brighton Nokks had only one purpose:
Love.
He would burn the whole world down before he let that love die.
BANG.
And immediately on that note, something hit the door from outside. Then another something. Then several somethings, all at once.
Inside Cherry's motionless body, the nascent consciousness slowly taking shape could sense everything.
She felt Bright return, felt his hands on her as he checked her battery, felt his lips on her forehead.
She felt his love, his determination, his desperate need to protect her.
And she felt something else. Something new.
The mana crystals in Bright's pocket radiated energy, and some of that energy seeped into her, drawn by the mana core forming in her centre.
It wasn't much. Just a trickle. But it was enough to push her core stability up by a fraction of a percent.
CORE STABILITY: 12.3%
Cherry didn't understand the numbers, but she understood what they meant.
She was getting stronger.
Slowly. So slowly.
But it was happening.
If Bright kept fighting, kept collecting those crystals, kept surviving...
Maybe, eventually, she'd be strong enough to help him.
To protect him the way he was protecting her.
