45 - Brinefronts Guide

  Hera walked into her room and locked the door behind her, placing a chair against the handle to prevent anyone from entering. Following that, she stepped inside the bathroom and turned on the shower and the sink.

  Remembering there was something else to do, she stepped back out and turned on a TV at a somewhat loud volume. Not unbearable so people would complain, but enough to make it look like someone was watching it.

  Hera had a moment of pause, thinking if this was a waste of water. As far as she knew, there wasn't any type of shortage here. Still, it was something to confirm later, just in case.

  Right now, her main concern was not to be heard by anyone. Feeling safe enough, she sat on the toilet and opened the skill.

  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  Local Guide - Explorer Skill
  It allows you to summon the Guide of the room you are in. The Guide will stay for five minutes and answer any questions you have about the room. Guides can ask for the remaining time to be reduced depending on the question asked.
  You can summon the Guide only once per room.
  Information about this skill can only be discussed with explorers who have the skill.
  Information about a specific Guide can only be discussed with explorers who have met said Guide.
  If these rules are broken three times, the skill will be removed and all memory related to the Guides will be erased.
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  Thinking back to how Peaches told her to activate the skill, Hera took a deep breath.

  "I call upon the Guide of Brinefront. As an explorer, I have proven that my motives are pure."

  Almost instantly, a small crack in the air appeared in front of her. It was almost as if reality itself had opened. On the other side was an area exactly like the bathroom. A perfect continuation of what she should be seeing.

  A few moments later, something fell from the hole. It was white with several small black dots, two fin-like protrusions in a dark brown color. There was a clump of similar fin-looking parts on its back in a way that it made it look like a bunny tail.

  This clearly wasn't like the monsters that appeared after the wall was broken, but Hera wanted to make sure of it.

  ?????????? - Brinefront Guide

  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  Letting out a breath of relief, Hera adjusted herself and looked at the Guide. Just now realizing why she thought the appearance was familiar. It was just like a bunny slug, aside from being the size of a cantaloupe.
  As she stared at it, two black, beady eyes appeared in front of its face.
  "Forgive me, Miss. I was not expecting to be called. It has been quite a while since I was summoned," the Guide spoke without showing its mouth. Its voice was surprisingly deep, and it had a noble quality to it.
  "Don't worry. I'm sorry for disturbing you."
  "There is no need for you to apologize. It is my duty, and I will perform it with all my heart."
  Hera smiled at the creature, "Thank you. Is there a way to see how much time I still have? I don't want to be rude, but it's the first time I'm using this skill, so I don't know for sure how things work."
  "Of course, miss, when the questions start, the clock shall appear above my head. However, I am of the belief that we should introduce each other before starting the procedures, even if not all my brethren would feel the same," the bunny slug raised its body then lowered its head doing what looked like a bow, "My name is Grand Duke Berthellemy, but you may call me Berthellemy, or Duke if you wish to save time."
  "Thank you, Berthellemy. My name is Hera, no title for now. Would it be ok if I call you Bert? Calling you Duke seems weird."
  "You may do as you wish, Miss," Berthellemy went back to his resting position.
  "Thanks, Berty!"
  The Guide flinched when he heard the name, "If you must, please just call me Bert."
  Hera nodded, worried she might have offended the creature.
  "Shall we begin?" the Guide asked as a timer appeared 30 centimeters above its head. It was currently marking 5 minutes.
  "Can I ask a question about the skill before we star, Bert?"
  "Of course. I will do my best to answer what is possible without spending time on the skill," Berthellemy gave another nod.
  "How does this actually work? Peaches said that I could ask questions and get answers, and sometimes answers cost more time than it took to say them. But he didn't give me any specifics," Hera explained, doing her best not to make it seem like she was complaining about the green slime.
  "That is not a problem to explain. And it won't cost you any time. The Guide you call will tell you when the time will start counting down. Most of my brethren give you a chance to formulate your question and only when you have asked it, start the time. However, there are those who start when you begin asking the question. It is something that we have the control over," Berthellemy gestured with his fake bunny ears as he spoke.
  "I see. And about the cost of time. What is that exactly?" Hera frowned, trying to understand everything. Even if she was in a rush, she had to be careful with this skill.
  "If you are to request a particularly valuable information, we might request more time to be removed from the timer than what is required for us to answer. Alternatively, we could stall and pretend to think. Again, it will depend on the personality of the Guide in question," Berthellemy stopped and looked Hera in her eyes, "Do you have any other questions about the skill or can we begin?"
  Feeling she might be pushing her luck, the Explorer shook her head, "No more questions about the skill. My first real question is, what is the quickest way to get stronger in this room?"
  As Hera started to make a question, the five minutes above Berthellemy's head began to count down.
  "That is a rather basic question, Miss. You can complete quests, finish dungeons, fight against other creatures. Successfully completing tasks that are above your current level is a quick way to increase your strength. Procuring better equipment is also a good way to do so, and since you are an Explorer, you can learn a new role skill. That usually gives a sizeable boost to your overall strength."
  Hera's eyes kept going between Berthellemy and the timer. That one question shaved off almost 30 seconds of total time. She needed to be more specific.
  "Where are the strongest monsters in this room?"
  "If you had asked that question before, I would say in the dungeon at the top of the cave. However, now a more powerful beast roams the area near the entrance to the East of the room."
  "When did that change?" Hera frowned.
  The Guide shook its head, "I am unable to tell you that, miss. You cannot afford that information."
  Hera nodded. She would think about what that all meant later, "Is there an item that could boost my power considerably that I can get in this room?"
  "All dungeons have items that can increase your power. However, none of them would be relevant in other layers. Not to say they are weak, but you could easily find better items the deeper you go inside the MAZE."
  It was a reply that Hera was expecting, but not exactly what she had in mind.
  "If I get a Legacy, can I get stronger quickly?"
  Berthellemy's fin-like ears moved a bit. Hera saw his eyes going to the ground for a moment before meeting her gaze.
  "It is hard to say. Legacies come in various shapes and forms. Some can give you an incredible boost right away, while others take a considerable amount of time to show it's true value. Some can even make you weaker for a long time."
  "Is there any way to gain levels faster, aside from what you told me?" Hera still focused on how to get more powerful
  Berthellemy shook its head, "I am unable to answer that question."
  "Why?"
  "You don't have enough time remaining."
  Hera nodded, looking at the time she saw that less than 2 and a half minutes remained. To get any more information, she needed to make more close-ended questions.
  "Please answer with yes or no unless I ask to elaborate," Berthellemy nodded, agreeing with Hera's request, "Is there a place in this room that no one ever went to?"
  "Yes."
  "Can people go there?"
  "No."
  "Is the creature in the west wall dangerous?"
  "Yes, very."
  "Would killing it boost my level?"
  "Yes."
  Two minutes remaining, Hera could go after a role skill, but which one?
  "Which role skill would be the best one to fight enemies much stronger than myself? You can elaborate,"
  "That would be a matter of opinion and synergy. Every role skill can help you fight stronger enemies. It is about what you do with the skill."
  Hera nodded, "I understand. But I'm asking for your opinion."
  Berthellemy stared at Hera looking her in her eyes. However, his stare lingered for too long. Eventually, the Explorer glanced at the timer, worried that she was wasting time, but it had stopped at 1:39.
  "That is a delightful surprise. I do not remember the last time an explorer asked my opinion. I believe that the best options are Sync, Assassinate, and Control. Mages are incredibly versatile and can exploit the weaknesses of their enemies. Assassins can move around undetected and deal more damage if they are hidden. Controllers are incredibly proficient in messing with their enemies' attacks and movement, or the surrounding terrain."
  Hera considered his suggestion for a moment. She was considering Sync and Assassinate for a while, the second one more for the ability to improve her [Hide].
  "Shall we continue, Miss?" Berthellemy gave her a moment, but he still had a job to do.
  "Yes, sure. I have a few other questions, but I'm not sure if the time will allow me."
  "Then, we keep going until the time stops."
  "Ok, back to the yes or no then. Can you tell me things about other layers?"
  "Yes."
  "Could you tell me if a specific mage is alive?"
  "No."
  "Is there an element that most creatures are weak against?"
  "No."
  "Is there an element that most creatures are not resistant to?"
  "Yes."
  "Please tell me what they are."
  Berthellemy closed its eyes for a moment while Hera watched the time go down. When only 30 seconds were remaining on the timer, the Guide opened its eyes, "It is rare to see a monster with some sort of resistance to mental attacks. Wind is also something difficult to create resistance to. And, as it is expected in nature, pathogens can easily wipe out a species. Of course, you need a particularly wicked pathogen to do so. But a single creature can easily die if infected by a potent virus."
  This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author's work.
  "So poison?"
  "Actually, it would be disease, Miss. That being said, poison is the initial step for anyone looking to acquire that type of attack."
  With that, the timer reached 0. It disappeared after a moment. However, Berthellemy was still on the bathroom floor in front of her.
  "I guess that is it. Thanks for answering my questions, and sorry if I was being rude, Berthellemy."
  The Guide shook its head, "No need to apologize, Miss. I understand that you were in a time-sensitive situation. But if you allow me to be so bold. Could I ask you some questions? It has been some time since someone called me."
  "Sure, you helped me so much."
  Hera smiled at the Guide. He asked questions about the world and the current situations of the MAZE. Hera explained what she could, telling him about the wall and the creatures that came after it.
  "I see. To be perfectly honest, Miss. I am already aware of everything you said. As we Guides can access your information network. However, I was more curious about your reaction to things. My apologies for not being honest with my initial inquiry," the bunny slug Guide bowed.
  "That's ok," Hera was somewhat surprised by that. She never expected the Guides to be able to learn things but it truly made sense, "Do you mind if I ask you a personal question?" she added hoping she could get a better understanding of those beings.
  "You may, but I am not able to answer anything that is related to the MAZE. For such is the agreement that the skill forces upon us."
  Hera nodded, "Do all the Guides know each other? Like, can you interact with other Guides, or are you all alone?"
  "We have our homes, yes. But if we so wish, we can gather, be it in our own houses or a common space. Nothing that is connected to the same places you can reach, so we are safe."
  "Right, that's good. It would be kind of sad if you were all alone. With no one around to help you if you need," Hera started to think about Helena. Was she safe? Could she be in danger and all alone? Feeling her eyes water, she cleaned them with her arm and turned back to Berthellemy.
  "I must say it would be, some of the Guides are very interesting. I would miss talking to them, even though some might be a bit too crass for my taste."
  "And do you know Peaches?"
  Berthellemy nodded, "I do, although I can't tell you anything about the other Guides."
  "I see. I just wanted to know if he was doing ok. You can't even tell me that?"
  "My apologies, miss. I am unable to share any information about other Guides. Even something as simple as their well being."
  Hera gave Berthellemy a sad smile, "I understand. If you can, just tell him I said, hey. And that the kid is doing fine, despite everything."
  The Guide nodded, "I will do, Miss. Peaches has a tendency to be too chatty when everything is going well, and it's been a while since I saw him quiet," Berthellemy winked at Hera.
  "It seems like him," Hera smiled.
  Berthellemy said it was time for him to go, and a second crack in reality appeared at his side. The Guide said its farewells and walked into the opening.
  Hera sat there for a few moments, still considering what she had learned. Turning down the faucet, she took a shower, trying to relax. Even if she wanted to go after Helena, she needed a plan. Right now there was nothing she could do aside from leveling up. However, as her friends told her, she had to be careful.
  During the next few days, Hera and her group hunted a bit in the afternoon, although not as much as they used to, and focused on training. Hera would check up on the thread about Helena almost every hour. The only update was about how the rescue team had already reached the Queeroni Wilds.
  Hera focused on learning the spells to start her solo hunting. In just three days, she had managed to get the 3 she wanted.
  Being a conceptual caster had its advantages. Hera didn't need to memorize a formula, and it was much easier to tweak the power of a spell on the fly. However, she couldn't have Bonnie or someone else telling her how to use magic.
  Having all three spells and a small stock of mana and health potions, Hera sneaked out of her room at night towards the city's exit. It was time for her to hunt.
  Hera had left the hotel a bit after sundown after telling her friends that she needed to do a role quest around the city. She had to do that, otherwise someone was going to follow. If she wanted to level up quickly, she needed to go hunting alone. Yet, for the first day, Hera only wanted to get the feel for it.
  Before crossing the city gates, Hera checked the thread about Helena once more. The last update was that the rescue team had left the doorway city in the Queeroni Wilds in the afternoon. They mentioned that it was a day's walk to the camp where the assault took place. However, since they were going to run, it shouldn't take long. In all likelihood, they would arrive there by morning on Brinefront time.
  Trying to focus on the task at hand, Hera left the city. The guards warned her about being dangerous at night, but that wasn't much of a surprise. A forest being more perilous in the dark was expected.
  Hera walked for a few minutes, just to be far enough from the wall for the frogs to be around. Activating her [Hide], she started to move through the forest. Her biggest worry was overusing her Pulse and having no mana left for the other spells. It would be tricky to do this type of resource management, but it was part of getting stronger.
  Moving around in the woods, Hera was careful not to go where the forest grew thicker. It was very dark outside the city. Only some of the moonlight was able to reach the area since it came from the east entrance of the cave. It took her a few minutes, but she managed to find a frog who seemed to be in a deep slumber.
  Approaching the creature with her handaxe at the ready, Hera saw another dozen frogs around it. She stopped for a moment. If she failed to kill it without a sound and in a single blow, the situation would go south rather quickly. Deciding this would be too much, she moved away from the group and back to her search.
  Another half an hour passed while she looked for a frog on its own. Sadly, they were all sleeping in groups. The smaller army of frogs she found had just three members, all of them of the blue variation. They were quicker, and their tongue was stronger, but still, if she managed to kill one of them quickly, dealing with two at once could be possible.
  Like a tiger stalking its prey, Hera crouched down, moving towards the frogs. Being careful not to make any noise, she stepped gingerly through the grass. Getting closer to the larger frog among the three, Hera aimed at the creature's neck and swung with all her strength.
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  [All In] effects deactivated, the cooldown will now start

  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  'Crap,' she thought to herself. The skill was supposed to be a Hail Mary, not an opening move. The strike was enough to decapitate the frog, but its head fell into the lake below with a loud splash. Hera froze, looking at the remaining frogs. One of them shuffled a bit and went back to sleep. The other was still unmoving.
  Keeping her eyes on the creatures, Hera circled the dead body. As she got close to her next prey, she failed to notice a loose branch in the way. Hera stepped on it, and it rolled away, making the explorer lose her balance. Hera leaned forward and tried to fall without making too much noise, but her handaxe hit the frog's feet. Before she was even able to understand what happened, the creature let out a loud croak. Its companion woke up with the noise, quickly moving towards the intruder.
  Hera quickly got up, slashing at the side of the frog she had already hit, trying to cripple it even more. The other frog lashed out with its tongue, aiming at the Explorer. Moving at the last moment, Hera dodged the attack, putting the already injured frog between her and the attacker.
  Holding her chakram tightly, she attacked the frog once more, making an X shaped cut on its back. The frog jumped forward, removing the Explorer's cover while the second frog lashed out once more. Spinning around, Hera tried to evade the attack while she raised her handaxe, aiming at the incoming tongue. She had fought enough of those creatures to know that their combat power would decrease drastically by injuring that appendage.
  The strike connected, making a large cut on the sticky tongue of the monster. Without missing a beat, she lunged forward, reaching the already injured frog. Hera jumped onto its back and aimed another slash at the base of the beast's neck. Her attack made a large gash on the frog, blood spilling toward the ground.
  The frog jumped once more. Forcing Hera to reach for its fresh wound in hopes of holding on, but its flesh gave in with her weight. Dropping to the floor, she recovered her footing and looked at the mostly unharmed frog.
  Quickly circling the creature, she raised her hand and aimed at it. A mana construct was created, and Hera focused on increasing the strength of her attack. In less than two seconds, she sent her Poison Spray spell aiming at the frog's eyes. A large line of orange liquid fired from her hand like a hose. She had used almost double the required mana, but seeing the beast shiver and trash its head around confirmed that it was effective.
  Taking advantage of the distraction, Hera rushed towards the one that was already in bad shape. Jumping on its back once again, she struck the same spot on the creature's neck. This time, the frog fell to the ground and stopped moving. Hera hit the neck once more to be sure it wasn't just a trick and jumped off the beast, already facing the remaining frog.
  The frog was turning around, still shaking its head. The eye where Hera had hit was dripping pus and fluid, while the other eye was cloudy and red in some places. Hera felt a bit bad for the creature. Even though she wanted to kill them for the experience, she didn't want them to suffer. Then again, this was how the world worked. Things killed each other to become stronger. In a sense, wasn't that how everything worked everywhere?
  A croak snapped Hera out of her philosophical meandering. The frog was about to jump towards her. She dodged to the side and attacked its stomach. Hitting the chakram in the undamaged eye, Hera spun around the creature and slashed at its limbs. She was having trouble seeing an opening to attack the neck since the frog kept thrashing around.
  The beast was getting slower by the second. Hera could plainly see that each movement was taxing for it. She kept dodging and slashing until the creature seemed lost strength in one of its legs, falling to the ground as it tried to move.
  The explorer quickly jumped on top of it and started slashing at the frog's neck. She needed a few strikes, but ultimately killed the third frog.
  "Ok, this wasn't as bad as I thought," Hera said, trying to catch her breath. The explorer was very tired from the combat. She managed not to get hit, but only because she didn't stop moving for a second. She would need some time to rest before going for another group.
  Hera was looking for a place to rest. She had never seen any dangerous birds or bugs in this room. Because of that, a tree seemed like the best spot for a rest. Climbing a larger tree, she felt safe enough to take a few minutes to rest and recover her mana. Hera looked at her stats to confirm how long it would take to recover completely.
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  Hera Kingsley -- Role: Explorer Level: 3

  Mana: 109/153

  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  She only needed about 40 minutes to recover all of her mana, 20 if she used the cycling technique. But right now, she only needed about six minutes to be at full mana. Yet Hera wanted to rest for about 15 minutes before continuing the hunt.
  It didn't matter how much she wished to get stronger and find a way to help Helena. If she weren't careful, she would die before being able to do a thing.
  Hera kept cycling her mana not only to recover faster but possibly increase her maximum mana. It didn't take long for her to feel her magic replenished. However, she was restless. The 15 minute break she gave herself went out the window.
  Ten minutes after sitting down, she came down from the branch and started to look for another group of frogs. This time, it didn't take long for her to find a good target. Only two of the creatures were around, but they were facing each other.
  Hera ducked down and started to move towards the frog. Moving slowly, she got close to its back and jumped on top of it, striking with her handaxe at the same time. The cut went straight to the monster's neck, and its body fell limp beneath her. As Hera looked towards the second frog, she got hit on the shoulder by the creature's tongue. She flew backward, landing back first into the ground. The impact made her lose her breath for a few moments.
  Hera was still trying to gather herself when a large shadow appeared on top of her. Rolling to the side, the Explorer got most of her body away from the spot she was just in. With a sickening crunch, the monster landed on Hera's leg.
  The explorer screamed with pain and started to slash away at the frog, trying to get the creature off her. Yet, the beast moved its head towards her and sent out its tongue once again not bothering with the attacks.
  When the creature faced Hera, she activated her Bark Skin spell, bracing herself for the impact. She managed to avoid being hit in the face, but the creature's tongue grabbed her armor and pulled her to its mouth.
  Hera let out another scream as the pressure on her leg increased. She felt the pull would rip her apart. The frog shifted its position, freeing Hera's foot. At the same time, she was pulled even faster towards the monster's maw.
  Trying to attack with her free hands, Hera couldn't cut the tongue that stuck to her in time, and the frog bit down on the explorer. She screamed once again as she felt the monster's teeth sink a few centimeters into her back.
  Hera was trying to open the monster's mouth by slashing at it repeatedly. That only made the frog apply more pressure on its prey. Seeing that her attacks weren't working, she let go of her handaxe and pushed one hand inside the mouth, trying to use it to create some leverage.
  The inside of the creature's mouth was too slippery to grab, and the smell was making Hera dizzy. She raised her hand, aiming deeper into the beast, and pushed most of her mana into a spell. The Poison Spray slammed onto the frog's throat, and the sickly orange glow dripped down to its stomach.
  Hera didn't stop pushing away and hitting it with her chakram that was outside the creature's mouth. After a few moments, the pressure was alleviated. The teeth she felt on her back were moving away. With all the trashing and slashing, the frog was already having trouble to devour its prey. Now it was even feeling a burning sensation in its stomach.
  The beast opened its mouth and retched, making Hera fall onto the ground covered in whatever the monster had eaten for dinner. The creature coughed and shook its head, the eyes aiming at the small human that had caused it to vomit.
  Hera picked Iris from the ground and attempted to run, but her foot hurt so much that she couldn't stand properly. She looked back at the monster, which stared her down with fury in its eyes.
  The creature got ready to jump, while Hera prepared to roll away. Just as the frog left the ground, its back legs were caught by something else. Something bigger that easily reached the branches of the trees.
  Hera saw the look in the frog's eyes, and for a moment she could have sworn it was afraid. The second monster opened its maw and quickly closed it back, putting even more of the frog inside it.
  For the first time, she was able to see what the monster was. A three-meter tall warty toad with red eyes and black skin was standing in front of her, eating the creature that was close to killing her.
  Hera stayed still, hoping that the monster wouldn't be interested in a dessert. She placed one hand on her foot and used the Mend spell, spending the rest of her mana hoping that it would be enough for her to run. The spell helped somewhat. It wasn't enough to completely take away the pain, but now she could move it a bit. Luckily, the crunching noise from before wasn't the sound of her foot breaking.
  She raised her head once again and saw the giant toad staring back at her. The frog was already completely inside its mouth.
  The toad took a step towards Hera, its mouth twisted in what could be described as a grin with saliva dripping from the side.
  Hera glanced to the side and saw that the forest grew thicker, maybe even too thick for the creature to follow. Mustering all her courage, and hoping the toad wasn't able to use its tongue, Hera dashed towards the woods.
  The toad followed, moving much faster than the frogs she was facing. It tried to lash out with its tongue, but its current meal was in the way. Hera kept running, looking back only to be sure to avoid any incoming attacks. She dashed through the trees, heading deeper and deeper into the forest.
  When she had a chance, she started to gulp down the health and mana potions she had brought. The potion would act on her entire body, so it would take a long time to trigger the effect on her leg. While the mana potion had an almost immediate effect.
  She kept running, activating her Pulse after her mana was back to see if the toad was still following her. She found no trace of the creature this deep into the forest, but there was a hollow tree nearby.
  She hoped the toad didn't have a good sense of smell and climbed into the tree. She needed some time to recover and rest. Going to the city wasn't an option since she was still too far away.
  Breathing heavily, Hera almost failed to notice the noise of something big landing near her. She tried to go deeper into the hollow tree and stayed utterly still, as the toad kept jumping around her, searching for prey that was trying to escape.
