“Try this one.”
“Hmm… Orange… and… strawberry.”
"Wow, that's correct!”
Aisha and I were bored, so we played a game where we put candies in our mouths and guessed the flavor. There were ten flavors, so I thought it would be a difficult game for both of us.
Surprisingly, Aisha turned out to be good at guessing flavors when she really tried, so she gained the advantage pretty easily.
“Maybe I should give you some weird flavor so you don’t guess it.”
“Let me see… We have one with coffee flavor…”
“That one is pretty obvious.”
"We have one with an odd shape. Perhaps it's a difficult flavor..."
"That's a chewing gum I bought accidentally. The texture would make it even more obvious."
There wasn't anything weird enough to fool her, so I guess I'll just win this by luck... Or maybe by cheating, but let's think about that possibility later.
“Anyways, do you like these candies?”
“These are good flavors.”
“Hehe.”
“I’m surprised that you didn't bring honey flavored candies.”
“I like honey cookies, but that doesn’t mean that I like literally anything with honey flavor.”
Perhaps it's the process, but the cookies manage to give the honey a perfect flavor that can't be replicated by any known human method. Or to put it simply, I just prefer cookies.
“Well, it’s your turn…”
“Right.”
Just when I was about to close my eyes and eat the candies Aisha was supposed to give me, I looked in another direction, noticing that Camila was focused on writing something in a strangely tiny piece of paper.
“... What is she doing?”
“I think she’s writing.”
“I can get that part. I mean, it seems interesting.”
There weren't many reasons to write something like that. The only one I could think of was a love letter. But I don't think she has time for things like love, considering all the time she spends with other people.
“Maybe it’s a letter for a teacher…”
“Instead of just talking to one?”
“Or maybe it’s homework.”
“During a recess? I don't think even the most responsible person would do that.”
None of those answers convinced me, so I gestured to Aisha and decided to go over and ask. Obviously, she nodded and followed my back.
“...?”
Camila was engrossed in her writing, so she didn't see us when we were standing in front of her desk. There I saw the word "graduate" written on the paper in beautiful handwriting.
Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings.
“Woah.”
“Hmm? Oh, do you need something?”
“I didn't know you wrote like that.”
“I usually write without too much detail, but I wanted to practice my handwriting.”
“For some particular reason?”
“... Oh right, I always forgot you started this year.”
So it was something from here. Every day I’m more convinced that I should’ve informed myself about this place before.
“I can explain it…”
“Okay.”
Aisha was strangely fast to take the initiative, so I heard what she wanted to say.
“A few years ago, some seniors decided to make an artificial tree covered in slips of paper with their wishes for the future. Everyone loved it so much that it became a tradition. At some point, the younger students got envious, so now everyone does it around this time of year. The seniors do it to have a good future, but we do it to see how much our wishes have changed next year.”
“Haha, I like it.”
I'd heard of wish trees, but this was my first experience with one. The closest thing I'd had was a time I went with my family to a wall covered in them.
“What was your previous wish? Making some friends?”
“I just wrote that I wanted to graduate…”
Camila covered her mouth like she was trying to not laugh, so probably Aisha was the only one with a wish like that.
“Everyone laughed at Aisha's wish. They knew it was exactly what she would want.”
“That sounds a little cruel.”
“I don’t have a problem with that. I know they weren’t serious…”
“If you say so…”
Ignoring that anecdote, the thing sounded pretty interesting, so I looked carefully at Camila’s paper to see if I could do something like that.
“Hmm.”
“You got interested?”
“I don't want to be left out.”
“It’s a bit too complicated to write on such a tiny piece of paper. So I recommend practicing that instead of your handwriting.”
“I’ll take it into account.”
“I will too…”
I imagined what Aisha's wish would be like… To be honest, I can't imagine anything specific, but I know it will be something good.
“Having good handwriting shouldn't be too different from drawing, so your wish will probably stand out a lot.”
“... I don’t know if I should apologize about that…”
“You don’t need to.”
“Okay…”
I only knew about this for forty seconds, but I'm already looking forward to seeing what it will be like. I wanted that day to come so I could see everyone else's wishes... Of course, that made me forget the most important thing.
“... So… What are you gonna wish for?”
“... Oh.”
I was thinking about writing, but I didn't think about the part where I actually had to use words to express a wish. To be honest, I had no ideas. I needed some references.
“What kind of wishes are usually written?”
“As Aisha said, seniors write about things like college or work. But we tend to write more about normal wishes. For example.”
In a pretty dissimulated way, Camila pointed to some of our classmates.
“She wanted to get a new desk, he wanted his own room, they both wanted to continue being a couple.”
“Pretty normal wishes.”
“I probably will write the same as last year…”
“You shouldn’t.”
“Yeah, okay…”
“That was easy.”
Whatever Aisha could write would be interesting, so I'll wait. In the meantime, someone else has piqued my curiosity.
“What about you?”
“Me?”
We don't know much about Camila outside of school, so this will be a good opportunity to get to know her a little better.
“That one is just for practice, right?”
“Right.”
“Have you decided?”
“Not really. There's too much to consider. I want many things, I don't know many things... And I regret many things...”
“Hmm?”
“O-Oh, sorry. I was rambling…”
What she mentioned seemed like a delicate matter. The right thing to do would be not to insist any further... But then I thought of something.
“... It’s not wrong to write about some sad things, right?”
“Not really. Some people write that they just want to be better or that they want to apologize for something. We all have one or two things that we want to correct about ourselves. For example, I sleep with and arm out of the bed.”
“Haha, I see...”
That got me thinking... I have some regrets... Maybe... No, it would be a problem if I put that on a tree visible to everyone...
After that, we became silent for a while. I wasn’t sure about what to say, Camila probably didn’t want to get a worse atmosphere… And Aisha usually doesn’t know what to say…
“Ahem.”
Camila ended up breaking the silence… Thanks!
“By the way. This is something that the students do, and we like to make the tree with recycled material. Can you both give us that?”
“I have some bottles and boxes…”
“I can ask my aunt.”
“Great.”
We probably won't think much about that tree. Even so, just thinking about what we want was enough to spark certain thoughts... and rekindle certain memories.
“Aisha, let’s go practice."
“This soon?”
“Camila is already doing it. We can too.”
“Okay…”
Everyone wishes for something. Why do we wish for it? What made us think about that wish? I don’t know. I cannot read minds. Maybe if I think too much about what I want I will end up nauseous....
I guess, thinking too much about it makes no sense.
