Glossary

Artificial Intelligence- Also known as AI. AI is a complex computer system that can perform tasks normally done by a human. In this story, AI has advanced to the point where it is nearly impossible to tell if the AI is alive or not, especially if the AI is a droid.

Ship AI- A type of artificial intelligence that helps operate a ship.

Bots- Robots. A machine able to replicate certain human movements and can function automatically. May have a human like appearance.

Dec- Dodecahedron class repair robot. A robot designed to repair ships and other things.

Retainer- A humanoid type of robot that can perform various tasks. Upgraded versions can be used for warfare.

Vassal- A humanoid type of robot that can perform various tasks. Upgraded versions can be used for warfare.

Droids- Androids. A more complex machine than a bot often with a human-like appearance. Droids with synthetic skin have cat, dog, or fox ears to distinguish them from humans. Some may even have tails. Unlike bots, droids have fully functional AI cores complete with personalities.

Companions- A type of droid designed and built to provide humans with companionship. Companions are often manufactured as pets such as dogs and cats. Companions have different levels of intelligence based on the design. For example, a Shiba Inu companion would be a little smarter than an actual dog and not be as intelligent as a human like droid would be.

Logic Core- A quartz crystal-based medium that contains all the programming a bot needs to operate. Consider it a type of CPU,

AI Core- A more advanced version of a logic core that houses a fully functional artificial intelligence.

  Console- A computer terminal.

Tablet- A touch screen based portable computer.

Implant- A nanobot based computer that is installed into a human host.

Eye Projectors- Nanites that project an implant’s output into the host’s retina.

Audio Receiver- Nanites that project sounds directly into a host’s ear.

Nanite- Another name for nanobots, which are microscopic robots.

Credits- Nonphysical Money. The currency of this story.

Star System- A group of stars and/or smaller bodies such as planets.

Red Dwarf- The most common type of star. Red dwarves have a reddish color and are smaller than our sun. They are known for their flares.

G Type Star- A type of star with a white or yellowish color. The sun is a G type star.

Starship- A vessel used for travel between the stars. Also called a spaceship or just ship.

Modules- Upgradable parts of a starship. Module can also refer to other things such as learning courses or computer programming.

Cyberwarfare- The use of computer technology to attack and disrupt an enemy. An AI upgrade in this story.

Cyber Defense- The use of computer technology to defend oneself. An AI upgrade in this story.

Psychology- The study of the mind and behavior. An AI upgrade in this story.

Bot Control- An AI upgrade that enables a ship AI to directly control robots.

Habitat Module- A caravel ship module that contains the things a human need to live such as a galley for cooking, a cabin, head, etc. In other ship types, these things are offered as individual modules.

Jump Gate- A stationary machine that folds space to allow faster travel from one star system to another.

Jump Drive- A ship module that folds space to allow faster travel from one star system to another.

Engine- A machine that converts one form of energy into mechanical energy allowing motion or movement. In this story, a type of ship module.

  Thruster- A type of engine.

Reactor- A ship module device that initiates and controls a chain reaction to generate heat for electricity production. Provides ship power.

Fuel Scoop- A ship module that enables a ship to skirt the upper atmosphere of gas giants and siphon off Helium 3 and tritium, which are used to start fusion in the reactor.

Tritium- A radioactive hydrogen isotype used as reactor fuel.

Helium-3- A stable and non-radioactive helium isotype used as reactor fuel.

Shield(s)- A module that protects the ship from damage.

Sensor(s)- A module that detects objects in and around the ship. Also called sensor suite.

Laser- A device that generates an intense beam of light. Used as a ship weapon.

Needler- A type of projectile weapon. Not used by ships but instead used as a personal firearm since the needles the gun shoots cannot penetrate a ship’s hull. The needles can be equipped with toxins, poisons, etc.

Stunner- A type of weapon that fires electrical current. Used to incapacitate enemies. Example: tasers.

Particle Beam- A device that generates a stream of charged or neutral particles at high velocities. Used as a ship weapon. More powerful than a laser.

Missile- A type of weapon often equipped with an explosive. An object that is forcibly propelled at a target.

Missile Pod- A device that holds and launches several missiles.

Turret- A self-contained, rotating structure that houses one of more guns. Controlled by a ship’s AI.

Cargo Hold- Sometimes called hold. Part of a ship used to store cargo.

Bridge- Part of the ship. This is where the ship is controlled from.

Lounge- A part of the ship used by the crew for relaxation.

  Galley – A ship’s kitchen.

  Head- A ship’s toilet facilities.

Caravel- A type of small older spaceship. The caravel type ships were designed and manufactured for exploration and trade by small crews or single operators with the assistance of an AI, droids, and bots. Caravels are fast, agile, and maneuverable. Caravels ceased to be built as the new level system was started and therefore not fully compatible with modern ship modules.

Merlin- A type of caravel. These ships are shaped like the birds of prey they were named after.

Zheng He- A type of caravel. These ships are bullet shaped and named after a famous Chinese explorer.

Nina- A type of caravel. These ships are arrow shaped and named after the ancient ship used by Colombus.

Sloop- A modern general purpose small ship starship. Fully designed with the upgrade system in mind. Sloops are larger than caravels, and slightly faster, though not as agile and maneuverable.

Yellowjacket- A type of sloop. Named after the insect it was designed after. A cheaper ship that is not well thought of by the galaxy at large.

Pitbull- A type of sloop. Named after the canine. More powerful than the Yellowjacket.

Ketch- Another type of small general purpose modern ship. Slightly larger than a sloop, with better armament, shields, and a slightly larger hold.

Cutter- Another type of small ship designed for speed and warfare.

Mantis- A type of cutter. Named after the insect.

Level- A representation of a ship’s and ship AI’s power and competence. Increased by increasing profit and purchasing the next increase instead of being rewarded by experience.

System- The governance that controls levels and what modules and upgrades are available for purchase at each level.
