And resources. Gods, the resources they'd need. Not the weak spirit herbs currently failing to revive Snow, but true treasures—Heavenly Frost Blossoms from the northern peaks, Dragon Vein crystals mined from the earth's arteries. The sort of rarities that didn't exist in Zan.
But more pressing than any technique or treasure was the conversation looming before him. Kai studied Lu Bu's eager face—the boy practically vibrating with excitement, unaware of the storm his existence would summon. How to explain this? Talent like Lu Bu's was a double-edged sword, and Kai had seen too many promising youths in the Ember Sword Sect ruined by early praise. There was Li Feng, who'd mastered the Flowing Sword at twelve and spent the next decade preening rather than progressing. Or Yan Mei, whose rare fire affinity had made her insufferable until a demonic cultivator carved humility into her flesh.
Kai exhaled slowly, choosing his words as carefully as a man defusing a landmine. "Lu Bu... what you've accomplished is... unusual."
The boy beamed. "Does that mean I'm special?"
There it was—the trap every teacher feared. Kai rubbed his temple where an old scar ached in the cold. "Special isn't the word I'd use. More like... dangerously unbalanced."
Lu Bu's smile faltered. "What?"
"Your spirit root." Kai gestured to the boy's abdomen. "It's like... imagine everyone else is born with a narrow drinking straw for qi. You? You've got a river delta. That's why you progressed so fast—your body's built for it."
The boy's eyes widened with dawning wonder, and Kai saw the dangerous spark of arrogance kindling. He crushed it immediately.
"Which means," Kai continued, voice hardening, "you'll hit bottlenecks ten times worse than anyone else. The higher you climb, the harder you'll fall when your foundation cracks." He leaned in. "I knew a man with great talent. But, he let that talent become arrogance. He then did something stupid, and challenged a senior cultivator to a duel and was crippled. He couldn’t even walk ever again after that."
Lu Bu paled, his fingers unconsciously tracing his own stomach. "But... you'll teach me how to avoid that, right?"
"Maybe." Kai let the word hang, brutal in its honesty. "If you listen. If you train basics until they're etched in your bones. If you can look at your own reflection and still see a student when the world starts calling you a genius." He flicked the boy's forehead. "That's the real test—and it never ends."
Snow whimpered in his sleep, a reminder of their fragility. Kai softened his tone. "Your gift isn't a reward, Lu Bu. It's a responsibility. The qi you waste in carelessness could save a village. The techniques you misuse could level mountains." He met the boy's eyes squarely. "So I'll ask again—are you ready to truly walk this path?"
The fire popped, casting embers like dying stars between them. Lu Bu hesitated before answering. When he finally spoke, his voice had lost its childish lilt, tempered by something older.
"Teach me," he said. "Properly."
Kai nodded, grim satisfaction warring with dread. The lesson had taken root. Now the real work began.
Kai shifted closer to the fire's meager warmth. As he settled into a cross-legged position, a streak of violet lightning shot across his lap—Zi, the illusion cat, materializing in a curl of purple mist before solidifying into a contented ball of fur. Her purr resonated like a miniature thunderstorm as she kneaded paws into his thigh, claiming her territory with feline finality. Kai allowed it, absently stroking between her ears while gathering his thoughts.
"Listen carefully," he said, watching Lu Bu mirror his seated posture with earnest precision. "As we travel, you must never reveal your cultivation to anyone. Not to merchants, not to villagers, certainly not to other cultivators. Understand?"
Lu Bu nodded vigorously. "But what if—"
"No exceptions." Kai's hand stilled on Zi's back, making the cat flick an ear in annoyance. "The moment someone recognizes your talent, you become either a target or a trophy. Most likely both."
The fire popped, sending up a shower of embers that reflected in Lu Bu's wide eyes. Satisfied, Kai continued, "Now, the framework of cultivation. We measure progress toward immortality through nine realms, though there is rumored to be more, but that requires leaving this world." He held up his free hand, counting off as Zi batted playfully at his sleeve.

"First, Body Refinement—preparing your mortal flesh to withstand qi's flow. Many spend years here, tempering muscle and bone like a blacksmith forging a blade." He tapped Lu Bu's knee. "You've already skipped half this stage thanks to your spirit root, which is both advantage and a danger."
Zi suddenly rolled onto her back, all four paws in the air, disrupting Kai's count. He sighed but obliged her silent demand for belly rubs as he continued. "Second, Qi Gathering—filling your meridians like rivers in spring. Third, Foundation Establishment—building the base for your future core. This is where a lot of cultivators can mess up. If you ruin your foundation it makes future advancement more difficult."
Lu Bu leaned forward, elbows on knees. "And after that?"
"Golden Core formation." Kai's free hand sketched a sphere over his own dantian. "A crystallized essence of your refined qi, dense and heavy as gold, forming where your dantian is. Creating one multiplies your power tenfold."
The purple illusion cat suddenly dissolved into mist, reappearing on Lu Bu's head in a puff of violet smoke. The boy yelped, swatting at the phantom’s paws now covering his eyes. Kai allowed himself a smirk before continuing.
"Nascent Soul comes next—the first true step toward immortality. Your soul awakens, begins its transformation. Then Soul Formation, where that transformation completes." His voice dropped. "Few reach this stage. Fewer still survive Body Integration, where flesh and spirit merge together."
A log collapsed in the fire, sending sparks spiraling upward like fleeing stars. Kai watched them fade into the dome's blue glow. "Tribulation Transcendence is exactly what it sounds like—the heavens themselves will try to erase you, sending countless trials to challenge you. Lightning. Fire. Heart demons. Most who attempt it become stains on history."
"And after all that?" Lu Bu whispered, now with Zi draped around his neck like a living scarf.
"Earthly Immortality. Infinite lifespan, near-limitless power." Kai's mouth twisted. "Of course, you'll have pissed off so many people by then that you'll need it."
Lu Bu's nose scrunched. "You said there are higher realms? But you have to... leave this world?" His voice quavered slightly on the last words.
"Not death." Kai shook his head. "At least, I don't think so. The legends speak of ascension—stepping beyond our plane of existence entirely." He shrugged. "But that's hearsay. I've never met anyone who's done it."
Zi chose that moment to dissolve into sparkling mist, reforming as a miniature dragon that coiled around Kai's forearm. He flicked her nose, making her sneeze indignant purple flames before transforming back.
"The point is," Kai said, watching the tiny cat pout, "each realm builds upon the last. Rush ahead without perfecting your foundation, and you'll collapse under your own power." His gaze sharpened. "And with your talent? The temptation to rush will be constant."
Lu Bu swallowed hard, his fingers unconsciously tracing his abdomen where his dantian now hummed with untapped potential. Outside their fragile shelter, the wind howled like a warning.
Kai rubbed his chin, studying Lu Bu with a practiced eye. The boy's posture, his breathing rhythm, the faint qi signature radiating from his pores—all told a story of unnatural progress. "Based on your development," he said, scratching behind Zi's ears as the cat purred, "I'd place you at Body Refinement rank 4 or 5 already. Your spirit root's essentially done half the work for you." He paused, realizing his oversight. "Ah, right—each realm has nine ranks/stages measuring your proximity to breakthrough. I should've mentioned that earlier."
Lu Bu's eyes sparkled with curiosity in the firelight. "So, Uncle Kai..." He fidgeted with the hem of his patched sleeve. "What realm and rank are you?"
"Qi Gathering, rank 3." The answer came automatically—the last official assessment he'd received years ago before everything went to hell. The memory of the sect's jade assessment chamber flashed unbidden: the hum of the testing stones, the disapproving frown of Elder Wen when his results showed no improvement from the previou years. He pushed the thought away. "Haven't had it checked in a while, but that's where I stood last time."
"Oh." The single syllable hung between them, heavy with poorly concealed disappointment.
Kai arched an eyebrow. "Disappointed, are we?"
Lu Bu's face flushed crimson. "No! I just—" He waved his hands frantically, nearly dislodging Zi from her perch on Kai’s shoulder. "I didn't mean—"
"Relax." Kai chuckled, though the sound carried an edge only someone who'd known him for years might recognize. "I told you already—I'm nothing special in the grand scheme of cultivation." He poked the fire with a stick, sending up a shower of sparks. "But that brings us to an important truth. There's a limit to how far I can guide you. Eventually..." He met Lu Bu's gaze squarely. "You'll need to seek teachers stronger than me if you want to keep advancing."
The boy's face fell, his fingers tightening around his knees until the knuckles whitened. The thought of striking out alone clearly terrified him—whether from fear of separation or the vast, unknown world beyond Zan's borders, Kai couldn't tell.
"Not for years yet," Kai added gently. "For now, let me show you how to reinforce your muscles with qi. It's called the Iron Sinew method, and—"
"AYEEEE! PLEASE DON'T EAT ME!!!!"
The bloodcurdling shriek of an unfamiliar voice shattered their concentration.
