Chapter 26 — Growth Through Ruin

The chamber beneath the throne room was dim, carved from ancient black stone veined with crimson Ni-lines that pulsed like a living heart.

Kaze sat at the head of the obsidian table, one leg crossed over the other, chin resting on his knuckles. His crimson eyes flicked from one general to the next.

“Well?” the Vampire King asked calmly. “Your assessment.”

Zev snorted first, lightning faintly crackling across his fingers.

“The boy’s control is atrocious. He leaks power like a cracked core and panics the moment pressure is applied.”

Sera leaned against the wall, shadows coiling lazily around her boots.

“He doesn’t understand darkness at all. He tries to command it instead of listening. Sloppy. Emotional.”

Roric folded his armored arms, expression cold.

“His bloodline is potent. His endurance is not. Pain breaks his focus too easily.”

Vex scoffed, spinning a dagger between his fingers.

“His weapon instincts are amateur at best. He thinks speed replaces intent. It doesn’t.”

  Lex exhaled slowly, eyes half-lidded.

“His mind is fractured. Rage, grief, hunger. No center. No stillness. He fights himself more than us.”

  Silence fell.

All five generals looked toward Kaze.

  Instead—

  Kaze smiled.

  Slow. Sharp.

  “Good,” he said.

  They blinked.

“Then continue,” Kaze went on calmly. “Break him. Mock him. Grind him down until all that remains is truth.”

  His smile widened, predatory.

“A blade is not forged by kindness.”

  The generals bowed their heads.

  “As you command, my King.”

Kaelen lay on the stone floor of his chamber, staring at the ceiling.

Every muscle screamed. His hands trembled. Bruises darkened his ribs, shoulders, jaw. His Ni felt raw—scraped thin by constant failure.

  Stolen novel; please report.

  I couldn’t land a single clean strike.

  Zev’s lightning had overwhelmed him.

  Sera’s shadows had swallowed him.

  Roric had bled him dry.

Vex had disarmed him in seconds.

Lex had broken his stance, his breathing, his confidence.

And none of them had even looked tired.

  Kaelen clenched his jaw.

“I’m not quitting,” he whispered to the empty room.

  His vision flickered.

  A familiar presence stirred.

  Kaelen stared at the screen.

  Then—

  He laughed.

  Softly at first.

  Then harder.

  Not because it was easy.

  But because it wasn’t pointless.

“…You’re trying to help me,” he said quietly.

For the first time since exile, something in his chest loosened.

He pushed himself up, muscles screaming, and washed the blood and sweat from his face.

Outside, dawn crept over the black spires of the castle.

Kaelen tightened the wrappings on his hands.

  “Second day,” he muttered.

Lightning sparked faintly under his skin.

Shadows clung closer to his feet.

  Blood pulsed—steadier now.

  He looked at his reflection.

  Still broken.

  Still weak.

  But no longer lost.

  “Alright,” Kaelen said, eyes hardening.

  “Let’s do it again.”
