I want to start this off by saying this plainly: I am not abandoning this story, and I am not quitting writing. My passion for Birth of Grub is still strong, and my excitement for where the story is headed has not changed.
With that said, following the release of Chapter 59 tomorrow, Birth of Grub will be placed on an indefinite hiatus. For the foreseeable future, no new chapters will be released. This is a deliberate decision made so I can focus fully and without distraction on the rewrite.
Before going any further, I do want to sincerely apologize to everyone who has read, followed, and enjoyed the story so far. I know a pause like this can be frustrating, especially after investing so much time into the world and its characters. I truly appreciate your patience and understanding as I take the time needed to do this properly and in a way that serves the story as a whole.
I also want to share something a bit more personal. When I first started writing this story, I genuinely never expected anyone else to care about it. It began as a “fuck it” kind of project, something I wanted to write for myself, with posting on RoyalRoad mainly serving as a way to stay motivated and accountable. The fact that people actually read it, enjoyed it, and chose to engage with it still honestly surprises me. Every view, follower, comment, favorite, review, and bit of support means more to me than I can properly express, and none of it is taken for granted.
During this hiatus, I will not disappear. I plan to post updates roughly once per week so you know how things are progressing and that the story is very much still alive. Comments and direct messages are always welcome. I read every single one, and reader feedback, ideas, theories, and questions continue to play a meaningful role in how I think about and shape the story. Since the story is now paused, this is also a great time to look back on it as a whole and share suggestions or thoughts on how it could be improved.
The core issue that led to this decision to put Birth of Grub on hiatus is focus. It has become quite obvious to me that the rewrite requires my full attention. Even after reducing the posting schedule down to 3 chapters per week, then even further down to 1 per week, splitting my effort and mental resources between rewriting chapters set earlier in the story and writing new chapters in the present timeline proved unsustainable. Managing the two timelines at once was actively hurting the consistency and quality of the work.
This is because the rewrite is not simply about polishing old chapters or adding extra scenes. It involves building foundational background work that I did not fully establish when I first began the story. Early on, my writing relied heavily on vibes and memory, which worked well enough when the scope was small. As the story expanded, it became increasingly clear that this approach would inevitably lead to inconsistencies, contradictions, forgotten details, and fluctuating system mechanics, just to name a few things.

As a reader, I would not want to read a story filled with those issues, and as an author, I refuse to put out something like that.
The recent introduction of the Beastkin made this especially clear. Properly integrating a new race requires thoughtful development of their culture, social norms, and how they fit into the wider world. I will not just slap a new race into the world without proper thought and care. That kind of work demands sustained focus and careful planning, which simply is not possible when I am constantly shifting mental gears.
With that explanation in place, I also want to clarify where the story currently stands. Chapter 59 ends partway through an arc. This arc will continue once the rewrite is complete, and the story will pick up from this point. The point of view will not switch back to Max until this section is finished and a natural transition point is reached.
Here is what all of this means moving forward.
There will be no new chapter releases for Birth of Grub for the time being. I unfortunately cannot give an exact return date. Based on my current progress in the rewrite, catching up to the present point will likely require somewhere between 90 and 120 rewritten chapters. This reflects both the scope of the rewrite and my decision to split longer chapters into multiple parts where appropriate.
I am also aiming for far more consistency in chapter length. Most chapters will fall in the 2,500 to 3,500 word range, with occasional exceptions when the story calls for it. The goal is steadier pacing and a more consistent reading experience.
All existing chapters will remain available throughout this process. The story itself is not undergoing massive changes. However, the rewritten version will include new chapters, expanded worldbuilding, additional scenes, and new points of view that are not present in the current edition.
Something else that is important to note: this rewrite is happening alongside real life. I am balancing it with a full-time job, spending time with my wife and caring for our one-year-old child, and preparing for a move to Germany in April. Removing the pressure of maintaining the current release schedule gives me the mental space needed to do this work properly and sustainably.
Looking ahead, once the rewrite is nearing completion, I plan to pursue shoutout swaps and review swaps with other authors and likely run advertisements when the story relaunches under a new URL. The organic growth this story has seen without any promotion whatsoever has shown me that it has real potential, and I want to give it the strongest possible launch. I will announce the completion of the rewrite roughly a week before the relaunch so I can prepare those final steps.
Ultimately, what this all boils down to is that this story is something I care deeply about. Pausing now is how I make sure it receives the care, consistency, and attention it deserves. Thank you to everyone who has chosen to follow along, and I look forward to sharing the next phase of Birth of Grub once it is ready.
