Chapter 4 Skills acquired, Lore learned, Title Drop achieved.

The supervisor thought for a few seconds before ringing a small bell. “Lea.”, he said as the lady from the counter opened the door. “Yes sir?” I noticed his nametag, stating his name was “Mr Landser.”

“We have a Rolander born in a noble's body, can you bring me the Book of Roland? I need to see what the procedure is for that.”

“Of course Sir.”, she said, closing the door.

“A Rolander?”, I asked and as the man turned to me again, his whole demeanor had changed.

“Yes Sir, a Rolander.” He looked at Rebecca. “O- I am terribly sorry Madam, can we somehow repay you for how our staff treated you today?”, he looked apologetic, not in the “I might lose my job” apologeticness, but in the “I might die a death so cruel that jumping feet first into an industrial grinder would be mercy compared to it.” apologetic. The man looked like he was about to wet himself and I could almost feel Rebecca grin.

“Ill think of something.”, she said before turning to me, nudging my shoulder.

“Worried about what I'd do if I figured out you were a Rolander hmm?” The tone she used was completely different from her usual tone a lot calmer, a lot more playful.

  "Yeah. Very much so.”

“Well it's not like I married Henry cause I wanted him as a person, I wanted what his title had to offer.”

  “Thats callous.”, I said.

“It might be”, she conceded “but you saw how a Demihuman gets treated in this world. And the receptionist was being very nice about it. I might have felt bad if I knew him, but if you were in my shoes you wouldn't either.”

Mr Landser pulled a small bottle from a hidden compartment in the table. He took my glass, wiped the edge and drank the rest. “Im going to pour the antidote to the truth serum into the glass now.”, he said as he poured the new liquid. It smelled something like cinnamon yet as it touched my tongue I couldn't help but gag a little.

  “Tastes like shit.”, I coughed.

“It does, regrettably. There are entire alchemical guilds dedicated to finding a better tasting alternative, knowing that they will own the market once they find it.”

Lea returned and placed a book before her supervisor. “Here you go Mr. Landser.”, she said. “Is there anything else?” Mr Landers looked up between us and I shook my head. After a few seconds Rebecca did the same. Lea nodded and left.

Mr. Landser opened his book and flipped through the pages, no doubt looking for what to do. “Never thought this would happen during my time, let alone in my town.”, he said with a nervous chuckle.

“What is a Rolander?”, I asked.

“Someone who comes from another world.”, Rebecca said. “They come from out of nowhere and either possess incredibly powerful skills that nobody else can wield, powerful artifacts or some sort of powerful technique or pet monster that fights for them. Most end up as kings or high ranking nobles with varying levels of actual ability to rule, some go off the deep end and so on and so forth.”

I was pretty sure I'd seen a couple Isekai like that.

I watched Mr Landser look at the book for a few more moments before taking a deep breath and asking him what had wondered but not dared to ask myself for days now: “What happened to-”

“To Henry?”, he asked. “Thats based on how the transfer happened.”, he explained. “May I ask-”

I explained how I had fallen off my chair and woken up just when Rebecca had pressed me to the wall, causing her to suppress a laugh. “That's when you showed up? You did pretty well hiding your shock, all things considered.”

The Supervisor coughed. “That means you did not necessarily die, right?”

“No, not as far as I'm aware.”

“Then going by what we know from former Rolanders, his soul is now in your body back from wherever you are.”

I closed my eyes and hoped that he did not mind too much. Who knew, with how people seemingly felt about having to interact, let alone marry with a Demihuman, he might be happy about this, about the chance to start anew, in a world with modern technology and loving parents. I could feel my chest tighten as I thought of my parents, but a few seconds later, the tension left, leaving a strange emotional buzzing instead that didn't stem from within me..

“So what do you want to do now?” Mr Landser asked, trying and failing to make eye contact with me.

“Well, we came here to register as adventurers, right?”, I asked, looking at Rebecca whose eyes glistened with delight. “We did.”, she breathed.

“Then I'd like for us to get registered.”.

Mr Landser wrangled his hands together. “Well, that might be a bit of a problem, the registration period for this quarter is already over.”

I sighed and a tremor went through him. “Thats a real sham-”

“No- Sir. Please, le- let me finish.”, he gasped. “You didn't- I mean you didn't need to let me finish I ju-”

I raised my hands in a placating gesture.

“Take a deep breath.”, I told him. “It's ok, I don't expect you to make a change for me just because I'm a Rover or something.” I looked at Rebecca. “That being said, I know it would mean a lot to my wife. Is there a way we could still make something happen? A temporary license, a preemptive promise to get us registered when the period starts again, anything like that?”

He swallowed dry. “I- Ill see what we can do.”, he said as he rose to his feet.”

“Before you leave-” He twitched as if stung. “Yes?”

“What did it say about the procedure?”, I asked. Sweat formed pearls on his forehead.

“Oh- right, that's what we got the book for-”, he swallowed again. “There was no precedent for a case like this so I suggest we leave it up to you what you do or don't do with the information.”

“Then I'd prefer it being kept a secret.”, I said. “Would that be ok?” The very idea of the expectation and attention this Status would bring made my skin crawl so the earlier I could nip this in the bud the better.

“Of course Sir, I will inform Lea as well.” And with that, he left.

Rebecca did not say anything while he was gone, looking at me from time to time as if inspecting me but I could not tell what she was thinking.

A couple of minutes later Mr. Landser returned

“S-so I checked.”, he said, pausing for a few seconds. “And… Im very sorry to say that but…. we cant register either of you right now since the grand priest is no longer here.”

  Stolen novel; please report.

“That's a shame, I said and got up. When-”

“B-but I can offer that we at least awaken your Grace.”, he stammered. “It wouldn't officially count as being an adventurer yet but it would allow you to begin levelling up and acquiring skills. Would that be ok?”

“That wouldn't really be fair to the other adventurers.”, I thought to myself immediately. “To give me this opportunity for reasons I couldn't control over them who may have had a harder time even getting this far. I looked at Rebecca.

“What do yo-”, she nodded quickly and I turned to Mr. Landser.

  .

“You see what my wife thinks, we′d be grateful for the chance.”

“I thought so, so I brought the plate with me.” He pulled a small plate, no bigger than the palm of his hand out of a pocket and laid it on the table. “Just press your finger in the groove.”, he said. I gestured to Rebecca that she could go first and she eagerly pressed her finger in it.

A small trickle of blood formed and dripped down to the center of the plate. Her eyes glazed over for a few seconds.

She raised a hand as if interacting with a touchscreen only she could see and gently pushed it over towards me with the other one, her tail wagging even as it was squished against the seat, I could feel it move..

I pressed my finger in the same grove as she had and a few drops of blood began dripping out. I didn't even feel any pain, I realised. As soon as my blood touched the circle a window appeared before my eyes, taking the shape of a grey screen with light blue edges and white writing. It was formatted like the menu screens of an RPG. I had read enough Manga and Manhwa to recognize a System when I saw one.

The blood of the gods curses at you, yet obeys its orders and grants you its Grace.

“Ominous and not at all worrying.”, I thought to myself.

Your personal skills are being applied…..

[Emperor's Gaze] is being applied to you.

[New World Mental Block] is being applied to you.

  Error..

  Error….

  Error…..

The Grace is attempting to apply a skill that will not fit to its intended user.

Request permission to change skill to fit its intended user.

“Sure. Do that.”, I thought to myself. “No point having a skill that doesn't fit me.”

Permission granted. The Grace will now reshape the target skill. This may take some time.

The remaining parts of the Grace will perform as normal in the meanwhile.

  Have a wonderful day.

With that my Grace closed again.

“Finally.”, Rebecca said with a teary smile. “I′ve been looking forward to this for years. I promised myself I would cry. I didn't think I'd ever-” Unsure what to say I gently pat her on her shoulder. She looked at me and wrapped her arms around me, pulling me closer, her face pressed into me and despite her promises to myself I could feel her tears even through my clothes as shivers went through her. Mr. Landser coughed, standing up. “I will…. leave you to it. Feel free to talk to me later if you need anything, Rolander.”

It took Rebecca a bit to catch herself again and when she did so her stomach began to growl. “Sorry.”, she whispered. “For clinging onto you like that and getting you all moist.” Her stomach growled again.

“Should we get something to eat?”, I asked and she just nodded in response.

Our initial reasoning for getting registered today completely forgotten, we walked out of the building until we found a small tavern with a sign with a vertically halved human on it. It was the same symbol that I had noticed on the inn where we had booked our room. Back then I hadn't dared to acknowledge it because doing so would have meant getting curious and asking questions I should not have asked as Henry but now that the cat was out of the bag, I could.

“What is that?”, I asked, pointing at the symbol. “It means they serve Demihumans here.”, she explained “Not all places do. But if you don't mind, I'd also have a few questions now.”

  “Sure.”

As we ate Rebecca asked me question after question about the world I had come from. Some things she felt curious about, like the Grace looking like something out of fiction from our world even though we didnt have it ourselves, and the concept of computers and how they compared to what I assumed was the magical equivalent of them, but she had a hard time believing that there were no demihumans, elves or dwarves.

“There can't be ONLY humans.”, she insisted.

Her demeanor towards me had changed. She had become a lot less cold and a lot less demanding overall. She wasn't the same person she had been at the mansion, at least towards me. I wish I knew for sure if it was only related to my new status, or the fact that I wasn't someone who looked down on her.

Otherwise she still acted the same, talking about waiting until she could get properly registered for adventuring, acquiring skills and power and a freedom unheard of by most demihumans, yet guarded when others spoke around her to me like she was a wall that I was standing behind. Acting like there was nothing to bother about casual closeness and as before, sharing a bed with me.

It was then, as I laid in bed next to her in total darkness, that the Grace opened again.

  The issue has been resolved.

  Ability [Limitless Potential]

  was changed to

[Behind every great person, there's their spouse. Lvl 1]

  Have a wonderful day.

I blinked at the Grace. [Limitless Potential] sounded powerful, something that could easily turn someone into the strongest person around. I wondered why it had decided it was wrong for me. I had no clue what the new ability was supposed to mean however. I wondered if I could just….

I whispered: “Explain Ability.” Rebecca groaned in her sleep and turned around.

[Behind every great person, there's their spouse]

This ability requires 2 Targets. Target 1 is “User”, defined as the person who innately possesses the ability [Behind every great person, there's their spouse]. Target 2 is “Spouse” defined as the person wed to “User”.

At its current level this Ability possesses 1 Power.

[I'll be your strength my love]

The User cannot raise their own stats via level up. Instead, the Stats of the Spouse are halved and then rounded up before being applied to the User. The Spouse receives a 10% Experience Bonus in all skills.

The Level of [Behind every great person, there's their spouse] is determined by both parties' disposition towards each other.

This ability does not affect the disposition of either party affected by the ability.

  Have a wonderful day.

  My Grace closed.

So my special Isekai power required me to be married.… I looked at Rebecca who was sleeping soundly next to me. Did that mean-

“My Isekai Bonus is my wife?”
