Ch 2
The horizon was no longer clear; it was choked with dust and rising plumes of smoke. I estimated their numbers to be between 150 and 200, and more were still hemorrhaging from that jagged spatial rift. As they drew closer, a chilling realization struck me—they weren't moving in a mindless hoard. They had split into two distinct tactical groups. One group was sprinting head-on toward us, while the other was veering sharply toward the Market District.
My blood ran cold. The market was where we had stockpiled our survival resources and where many defenseless families were sheltered. It was barely half a kilometer away from here.
As we closed the distance to within 200 meters, the details of the invaders became horrifically clear. They were canine in shape but significantly larger than any wolf. Their bodies were pitch-black, resembling charred skeletons held together by cooling embers. Grey smoke leaked from their joints, and angry red cracks—like veins of liquid lava—pulsated across their hides. Where they ran, the dry husks of the harvest erupted into flames. They didn't just bring war; they brought a wildfire.
Suddenly, a semi-transparent window flickered in my vision:
"So, they’re called Cinder-Hounds," I thought, my grip tightening on my astra. I wondered what 'Rank D' signified in this new world's hierarchy. The warning about 'High Thermal Signature' was redundant—I could literally see the earth melting beneath their paws.
"There's about 85 to 100 of them in this first wave," Ankit noted from beside me. He sounded disturbingly calm, almost cocky. "They don’t look like much, Amit. Just oversized burnt hounds. I bet we can take them down easily."
He let out a short, arrogant laugh.
"Don't underestimate them, Ankit!" I snapped, my voice laced with caution. "Just because you've gained power doesn't mean you're invincible. Treat every enemy as a lethal threat until proven otherwise."
I watched them closely. They were moving in coordinated packs of four, circling and flanking like professional killers. We halted our advance, bracing ourselves for the impact. Knowing they were creatures of fire, I reached into my quiver and pulled out a Tier-1 Water-Astra.
As I nocked the shimmering blue arrow, I could feel the cold Prana battling the rising heat in the air.
I activated my Strength Prana, feeling the muscles in my arms ripple and tighten with enhanced power. I pulled the string of my Silver bow back to its absolute limit and unleashed the first astra. It streaked through the air, striking a lead Cinder-Hound with immense force. However, it wasn't the instant kill I had expected. Instead of collapsing, the creature let out a guttural hiss as clouds of thick steam erupted from the point of impact where fire met water. It was still standing, and it looked angrier.
Realizing my Tier-1 astra lacked the necessary punch, I didn't hesitate. I reached for my Tier-2 Water Astra. The pack was closing in fast—they were now barely 150 meters away, a blur of charred bone and leaping flames. I nocked the shimmering blue shaft and released. I didn't even need to aim meticulously; with nearly eighty of them charging in a tight formation, hitting a target was easy.
This time, the impact was catastrophic for the invader. As the Tier-2 Water-Astra collided with the creature’s molten core, a violent reaction occurred. A brilliant, blinding white light flared from within the hound's ribcage, followed by a deafening explosion.
The notification confirmed my theory. My eyes widened as I roared to my companions over the sounds of the battlefield, "Each kill grants XP! We can Level Up right here, in the heat of the fight!"
A wave of shock passed over the other warriors, followed quickly by a surge of renewed greed and determination. I decided to hoard my remaining Tier-2 Water Astras—I only had ten of them left, and I knew I would need them for the tougher threats. I quickly switched to my Tier-2 Air Astra.
Before I could let the next shot fly, the Cinder-Hounds breached the 100-meter mark. Ankit, Rocky, my brother, and Maya couldn't wait any longer. They roared in defiance and charged forward to meet the flaming pack head-on. I stayed back, positioning myself as the ultimate support—the silent guardian who would rain death from the rear.
"Use your Tier-2 abilities only!" I shouted after them as they charged. "Don't hold back, or you won't survive!" They gave a brief nod, their eyes fixed on the approaching inferno, and surged ahead.
I nocked a Tier-2 Air Astra and released. The projectile whistled through the air, striking a lead Cinder-Hound squarely in the neck. I was already reaching for my next shaft when I saw it—something that made my blood run cold. As soon as the arrow impacted, the hound didn't just die. Its entire body fractured into brilliant, glowing white veins. A split second later, it detonated.
The explosion was so violent that it felt like a tank shell had gone off, scorching everything within a three-meter radius.
"STAY BACK! DON'T GET CLOSE!" I roared at the top of my lungs. "THEY EXPLODE UPON DEATH!"
But I was too late. Their momentum was too high. Rocky had already reached the frontline, bracing his shield and swinging his sword at the nearest hound.
The moment his blade bit into the creature's charred hide, it transformed into a blinding white light and erupted. The force of the blast sent Rocky—a Level 5 warrior—tumbling backward through the air for nearly three meters.
I looked toward Maya. She had just brought her heavy Gada down on another hound's head. The same terrifying transformation occurred; the creature turned into a white nova and exploded, the shockwave throwing her back violently. Ankit, who was slightly behind her, narrowly missed the primary blast but reacted instantly, hurling his spear at the hounds directly in front of Maya to keep them at bay.

My frantic warning finally registered. The other warriors skidded to a halt, their faces pale with shock. They became instantly alert, realizing that melee combat was a death sentence. They immediately began to shift tactics, activating their long-range skills and maintaining a desperate distance from the flaming
"You piece of—!" I cursed the System under my breath. Did this damned interface really have to wait until we were mid-combat to send the notification? Could it not have warned me a few seconds earlier?
I saw Rocky staggering; thanks to his heavy shield, he hadn't taken the full force of the blast, but he was scorched and dazed. A Cinder-Hound, sensing his weakness, lunged toward him. I immediately pulled a Tier-2 Water Astra and loosed it. The projectile found its mark, and the hound dissolved into a cloud of steam and shrapnel before it could reach him. Since Rocky was prepared this time, the blast didn't throw him off his feet.
I realized then that we had to end this quickly. If this fight dragged on, someone was going to die.
Nearby, Ankit struck a hound with his spear. As soon as the creature began to glow with that ominous white light, he activated his Tier-2 Defensive Technique to mitigate the damage. He survived the blast, but another hound leapt at him from his blind spot. Before it could sink its teeth into him, Maya appeared, delivering a brutal kick to the beast’s midsection, sending it flying several meters away.
Two more hounds were closing in on Maya from the flank. I didn't waste a heartbeat. I drew another Tier-2 Water Astra and fired. The first hound was neutralized instantly, exploding at a safe distance. For the second one, Maya didn't wait for my cover; she hurled her massive Gada with bone-crushing force. The mace slammed into the hound mid-air, triggering a blinding white explosion that illuminated the darkening battlefield
I realized that simple volleys wouldn't be enough to turn the tide. It was time to unleash my Ultimate Tier-2 Astras. I reached into my spatial storage, pulling out a specialized astra, and instantly activated the core ability of my Race: [Chakra Tattoo Resonance].
Immediately, the bow began to hum, siphoning the elemental Prana from my Lotus. I pushed the resonance to its limit—100%. I could feel the prana being channeled through the Tattoos on my Chakras, flowing directly into the astra-head. The air around me crackled with the sheer density of the power.
Just as the charge completed,I released the string. The astra streaked across the battlefield like a blue thunderbolt, slicing through the air and striking the two hounds lunging at Maya. On impact, a massive explosion of pressurized water erupted, followed instantly by two more violent white flashes as the hounds' cores were destabilized.
I ignored the notification, my focus entirely on my internal reserves.
[Remaining Prana of Human: 90%]
I estimated I could sustain this level of output only a few more times.
As I nocked another water astra to begin a new resonance, I caught a movement in my peripheral vision. Ankit was standing his ground, a spear glowing with volatile prana in his hand. With a powerful grunt, he hurled it into a cluster of four hounds that were closing in on one of our evolved bulls.
The spear struck the exact center of the pack with devastating precision. The impact triggered a chain reaction—four simultaneous explosions tore through the air, incinerating the grass and sending shockwaves across the field. I realized then that Ankit had also tapped into his Ultimate Tier-2 Skill.
My gaze shifted to my brother across the chaotic field. He was fighting with a primal agility I hadn't seen before, using his Space Claws to deliver lethal slashes to the hounds. Each time his claws tore through their charred hide, he would instantly vault away, narrowly escaping the blinding white explosions as the creatures detonated behind him.
Seeing that my immediate family was holding their own, my eyes darted to the flank where my uncle was stationed. Two Cinder-Hounds were flanking him, their glowing maws ready to strike. Without a second’s delay, I pulled my Silver astra to its limit, the Tier-2 Resonance humming with lethal intent.
The astra streaked through the air and struck the lead hound with a thunderous impact. The resulting explosion was so massive that the shockwave triggered the core of the second hound nearby. Both creatures erupted in a twin pillar of white flame, leaving nothing but ash behind.
[REMAINING PRANA OF HUMAN: 80%]
I barely glanced at the glowing notifications in my peripheral vision. There was no time for celebration. I immediately began channeling my next Ultimate Tier-2 Air-Astra, the air around me vibrating as I prepared to clear the remaining pack.
As I watched, two cinder hounds suddenly emerged from the smoke, lunging toward a distracted villager. My heart spiked. I didn't have time for a precision shot.I released the string, and the projectile didn't just fly—it tore through the atmosphere like a supersonic jet.
The astra struck the lead hound with such kinetic force that it was lifted off the ground, its body slamming into the hound behind it. A microsecond later, the internal cores of both beasts destabilized, erupting in a twin pillar of blinding white flame that scorched the iron-grass for meters around.
[REMAINING PRANA: 70%]
I looked toward the other village warriors. They were adapting faster than I had hoped.
Because I had screamed the warning about the Explosive Rupture early on, they had stayed back, maintaining a desperate perimeter. They were now cycling their long-range Tier-2 skills, keeping the hounds at a distance. Cold sweat broke out on my forehead as the realization hit me: if I hadn't noticed that these monsters were walking bombs, we would have charged into a melee massacre. We would have been shredded, our bodies charred beyond recognition by the very enemies we thought we were defeating.
The thought made my skin crawl.
Movement to my left caught my eye. It was Lori, our small cat. In this new world, she was no longer a pet; she was an apex assassin. She moved with a frightening, fluid agility, appearing as nothing more than a streak of shadow.
She would leap onto a hound, her claws—now reinforced with Prana—tearing across its eyes before vaulting away into the tall grass. She was gone before the white light of the explosion could even manifest. To her, this wasn't a war for survival; it was a lethal game of tag, and she was winning.
Nearby, the ground shook with the thud of heavy hooves. Golu, our evolved bull, was a living tank. With a Defense Stat of 10, he was the only one who could get close to the heat without collapsing.
He lowered his massive head, his horns glowing with a dull Prana, and gored a Cinder-Hound through its midsection. With a toss of his neck, he hurled the beast into the sky. It exploded mid-air, a safe distance from the frontline. As Golu turned to find his next target, I saw the cost of his bravery. His front legs and forehead were singed black, the hair burnt away by the repeated blasts.
