Chapter 26 – Veilward

Ravenn turned slightly in his saddle, eyes scanning the darkening forest ahead.

Night had fully claimed the road.

The last trace of dusk was gone.

Only lantern-light and engine glow cut through the shadows.

He looked to the mage riding beside the lead tanker.

  “Activate the Veilward.”

The mage nodded at once and lifted his staff.

Runes ignited along its length—soft hues of muted green and pale blue—then spilled outward like slow-moving mist.

A Veilward Sigil spread around the convoy.

The air itself seemed to dull.

  Sound softened.

  Scent thinned.

  Presence blurred.

A spell not meant for battle—

  but for survival.

  One that confused weak night-creatures.

One that made wandering beasts hesitate, turn away, or simply fail to notice.

Not strong enough to stop strong monsters.

But enough to pass through the night.

  The forest responded.

  Shadows shifted.

  Something crawled between roots—

  then froze.

Yellow eyes flickered in the dark—

  then vanished.

  The convoy continued forward.

  Lanterns swayed.

  Engines rumbled low.

Metal creaked as tankers rolled across stone and dirt.

Strapped to the rear platform of the lead tanker—

  Elara hung helplessly.

  Her wrists burned.

Her throat ached behind the gag.

Tears streaked silently down her cheeks.

  Ahead of her—

  Ashren.

  Unconscious.

  bruised,

Carried like weight instead of a person.

  Even now, even like this—

  His fingers twitched.

  Curling.

  Uncurling.

As if still reaching for a blade that was no longer there.

  Ravenn noticed.

His gaze lingered longer than it should have.

“This,” he said quietly, more to himself than anyone else,

“is why the world breaks people like him…”

  Elara’s shoulders shook.

  “…or forges them.”

The mage leaned closer, voice careful.

“Sire… what shall we do with the boy?”

  “Carry him to our encampment?”

Elara let out a broken sound.

“No—!” she cried, fighting her bonds.

  “Please—don’t take him—don’t kill him—please!”

  Her voice cracked completely.

  Ravenn didn’t answer right away.

He watched Ashren’s chest rise and fall.

  Slow.

  Uneven.

  Alive.

  Then Ravenn spoke.

  “We are not taking him.”

  The mage blinked.

  “…Sire?”

  Ravenn’s gaze never left Elara.

  “Did you hear me?”

“Yes,” the mage said quickly. “Of course.”

Elara sucked in a trembling breath.

“Y-you won’t kill him?” she whispered.

“Please… just leave him alone. Please.”

Ravenn turned his horse closer to the tanker.

He leaned down slightly, his voice calm—almost gentle.

“As you wish, Princess,” he said.

  “Your word is my command.”

  Her eyes widened.

  He raised a hand.

  “Set him down.”

Vorrek hesitated only a heartbeat—then lowered Ashren to the forest floor.

His body struck the earth with a dull, final sound.

  Elara sobbed.

  The shadows thickened.

Ashren’s presence faded into the noise of the night.

  “Leave him,” Ravenn said.

  The convoy rolled forward again.

  Elara screamed.

  “ASHREN—!”

Her cry echoed through the trees, raw and broken.

She fought against her restraints until her strength gave out.

Ravenn leaned close, his lips brushing her ear.

  “Calm down, Princess,” he whispered.

“You’re making this worse than it is.”

  Her breath hitched.

“If he survives the night,” Ravenn continued softly,

“then perhaps he was meant to.”

  “And if he doesn’t…”

  He pulled back.

“…then the world has made its choice.”

  Elara’s sobs turned silent.

The convoy disappeared into the darkness.

  Lanterns faded.

  Engines vanished.

  The forest swallowed them whole.

  Only the wind remained.

  And Ashren—

  alone,

  bleeding,

  unconscious—

  left beneath the cold stars.

Somewhere deep in the forest, something stirred.

  Night had only just begun.
