Side Story: The First Loot Drop

Side Story: The First Loot Drop

The convenience store wasn’t much to look at anymore, its shelves upturned and empty, the flickering lights casting a dim glow over the shattered windows. But to Adrian, it was a beacon—an oasis in the midst of a crumbling world. Here, in this forsaken space, lay the first piece of the puzzle he needed to move forward.

Loot. That was the word Adrian had learned to associate with survival in this new world. And like everything else, it came with rules: find it, earn it, use it.

The first few days after the chaos had descended had been about scrambling to stay alive. But as the waves of cosmic energy twisted reality and the first Aberrants started appearing, Adrian had realized that the key to not just surviving, but thriving, lay in harnessing the energy of the world—and that meant collecting what the System offered.

  Loot Drops.

Adrian had always been skeptical about the System at first. It was too... artificial, too game-like, especially when the stakes were this high. But the more he engaged with it, the more he understood: it wasn’t just some divine twist of fate. It was the new law of reality. And he had to play by those rules if he wanted any chance of saving the planet.

He crouched near a fallen crate in the convenience store, his eyes scanning the contents.

"Mike, get over here," Adrian said, his voice low but urgent.

Mike was across the room, examining the aisles where the remaining food and supplies had been tossed around. He hadn’t been thrilled with the idea of scavenging. He was more accustomed to combat than to searching for things to survive. But as Adrian had explained, looting was essential now—just as important as fighting.

Mike moved toward Adrian, stepping carefully around the broken glass and debris. He stopped next to him, peering into the crate Adrian was fiddling with.

"What's in there?" Mike asked, his voice cautious.

Adrian pulled out a small, glowing crystal from the crate. It was radiant with energy, its surface shimmering with a faint light.

“A Mana Crystal,” Adrian said. “This is the real currency now. These crystals hold the energy harvested from the world. We can use them to power up the Genesis Ring, upgrade our abilities, and make ourselves stronger.”

Mike took a step forward, his eyes widening as the crystal pulsed with light in Adrian’s hand. He reached out, but Adrian quickly pulled the crystal back.

"Not yet," Adrian said, a smirk on his lips. "We’re not in a safe place to use it. We’ll need to find a secure location before we can start upgrading."

If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

Mike’s grin faded. "What’s the point of finding all this if we can’t use it?"

Adrian's expression turned serious. "We can’t afford to waste it. We need to be strategic. We’re in a race against time, Mike. The Hive is getting closer, and every piece of loot we collect has to count. The energy’s precious now. Use it wisely, or we won’t make it out of this alive."

Mike let out a low chuckle, the weight of Adrian’s words sinking in. "I get it. You’ve been at this longer than I’ve been awake, haven’t you?"

Adrian didn’t answer right away. Instead, he tossed the Mana Crystal back into the crate and dug deeper. There was more. There had to be more.

He had grown accustomed to the pulse of the System now, to the subtle vibrations of the energy that lingered in the air, guiding him toward valuable resources. And there it was—another glowing shard.

"Another one," Adrian muttered, pulling it free. He handed it to Mike. "We’ll need these for what’s coming next. If we’re going to fight the Hive and survive long enough to secure the Mandaue Node, we need everything we can get."

Mike studied the crystal, feeling the energy hum in his palm. “And this? It’s just going to be a part of the plan?”

Adrian nodded, his expression intense. "Exactly. We use the energy from these crystals to power the Genesis Ring, to upgrade our abilities, to increase our chances of survival. But there’s a catch—the Admin’s Tax. Ten percent of all harvested energy goes to maintaining the planetary shield. So while we get stronger, we’re constantly paying a price. It’s a balance we have to manage."

Mike stared at the crystal, his mind spinning with the implications of what Adrian had said. They weren’t just fighting the Aswangs or the Hive. They were fighting a system that had been set in motion long before they even knew what was happening. Every victory they achieved came with a cost—energy siphoned away, opportunities lost.

Adrian placed the second crystal into his pack and stood up. "This is just the beginning. We’ve got a long way to go before we’re strong enough to face the Hive, but every drop of energy helps."

Mike nodded, his resolve hardening. "Then let’s make it count."

Just as Adrian began to turn toward the door, a notification pinged in the corner of his vision.

  Loot Drop Available

  Energy Surge Detected

Loot Drop in proximity: Mana Crystal, Basic Health Potions, and Kinetic Boosters.

Adrian’s eyes flickered to Mike, who was already moving toward the door. They had no time to waste. But the thought of leaving loot behind was almost too much to bear.

“Wait,” Adrian said, a decision already forming in his mind. “There’s more. Let’s check the back.”

  Mike raised an eyebrow. "Back?"

Adrian grinned, his eyes gleaming with the thrill of the hunt. "You’ll see."

As they moved through the aisles, Adrian’s senses flared. The air was thick with the potential of loot. He wasn’t just picking up crystals; he was scanning for everything. Any small advantage could be the difference between life and death.

In the back of the store, hidden behind a fallen shelf, they found what they were looking for. Another crate, tucked out of sight. Adrian wrenched it open and grinned. Inside were vials of health potions—glowing green, pulsing with life. And beside them, a set of Kinetic Boosters—small, red capsules that, when ingested, would enhance Mike’s ability to absorb and channel kinetic energy.

"These will be useful," Adrian said, tossing a few vials of health potions to Mike. "We’ll need to keep ourselves in fighting shape."

Mike picked up the Kinetic Boosters, inspecting them with interest. "What do these do exactly?"

"They’ll help you channel energy more efficiently," Adrian explained. "They enhance your conversion ability, making you stronger with each blow you absorb. But only take them when necessary. Too many and your body could overload."

Mike pocketed the boosters. "Got it. So, what’s next? We find the Hive and start slaying?"

Adrian paused, looking back at the convenience store. The loot they’d found wasn’t just a quick fix—it was a lifeline. Every item they collected was a piece of the larger plan, each piece crucial for what was to come. But even more important than the loot was the knowledge that they were now part of something bigger. The system, the energy, the cosmic forces—it was all leading to one final showdown.

"Next," Adrian said, his voice steady, "we prepare. We’ve got the energy, the upgrades, and now we’ve got a plan. We need to be ready when the Hive arrives. There’s no turning back after that."

Together, Adrian and Mike left the convenience store, the weight of the loot heavy in their packs. The next chapter was about to begin, and they were ready to face whatever the System had in store for them.

But as Adrian looked up at the sky, the distant roar of the Hive reverberating in the air, he knew one thing for sure:

The real fight was just beginning.
