Chapter 12: Into the Woods

It was after dark. Fear clutched at her gut. Why was he out after dark?! Calm down, Kasia. It’s not the full moon. He should be okay… Kasia waited on the bed in his room, anxiety churning in her gut with each passing minute.

After an imagined eternity, the door finally opened.

Kasia rose to her feet, excitement turning to disappointment when she saw it was Sondra.

"He told me he would be careful. That he wouldn't go out after dark." Kasia slumped back onto the bed.

“I came up to see if you wanted anything to eat. He’s not here?” An air of rebuke could be heard in Sondra’s voice.

Kasia shook her head, grabbing his pillow, hugging it to her chest. “No… and I already had dinner. Thank you, Sondra.”

“Would you like me to wait with you?” Sondra sat on the bed and put her arm on Kasia’s knee. “You poor thing, you’re really worried about him, aren’t you? I’m sure that he’s fine. Have you seen the muscles he packs under that shirt?”

Kasia nodded and cuddled up to Sondra, laying her head against the older woman’s breast. “I know he’s strong.. And maybe he knows how to brawl, but that doesn’t mean he knows how to fight the monster that’s out there. It killed a fully trained knight! Isaak doesn’t stand a chance, no matter how strong he is. But…It seems to show up around the full moon, so maybe it’s not out tonight.”

“Maybe what’s not out tonight?” The door flung open unceremoniously. Isaak stood on the threshold with a large smile on his face. “Well hello, beautiful.”

Kasia stood up, her body trembling with emotion. She was furious and joyful and it was very, very confusing. “You! You promised me you would be careful! You know it’s not safe to go out after dark!” She wanted to run into his arms. She wanted to smack him.

“Come on, it’s barely late.” He defended himself with a cocky smile. “I thought you would be glad to see me. Not angry.”

Sondra shook her head in exasperation beside Kasia.

Kasia ran her hands through her hair, fisting it in frustration, “Damn you! And damn me for caring about you!”

Jeeze, was this how her father felt when she did something stupid like sneaking out after dark? Apparently she owed him a very sincere apology. She sat down on the bed taking deep breaths, “Please, Isaak. This monster is dangerous. I don’t want you to die. Is staying in after dark such an unreasonable request? Where do you have to go this late?”

“Other than cutting wood when it’s cooler? To keep my sanity. I’ve lived in the woods my entire life. I’m not scared of some monster.” He replied nonchalantly.

Kasia squeezed the pillow she was holding tighter, imagining it was his neck. “You didn’t see the body! You didn’t see what it did to Bruno! You should be afraid, you damned fool!”

“Why?” He still hadn’t walked in the door.

Sondra kissed the top of Kasia’s head and excused herself to leave them alone, Isaak finally moving to let her pass.

Kasia screamed into the pillow, “Because you’re just a woodsman and this is one of the spawn of the destroyer! You wouldn’t stand a chance against such a thing!”

“Just a woodsman?” He said quietly. His eyes dropped to the floor.

Kasia’s heart stopped, her eyes searching his face beseechingly, “I didn’t mean— I’m sorry! It’s just that—this creature killed a fully armed and trained knight!” guilt roiled in her gut. “I didn’t mean to-to demean what you do for a living. I just meant you’re not a trained monster slayer.”

“So you think that I’m weak?”

“All of humanity is weak next to monsters!” She shouted, “And you fucking run head first into danger like-like,” Kasia was so upset she was spluttering, “It’s like you want to die but are too fucking scared to do it yourself!”

“What did you say?” His expression sharpened to flint as he looked at her.

“That’s it, isn’t it?” Kasia continued, “You either want to die or you don’t care if you do– that’s why you behave this way! Only fools and those with a death wish do not fear monsters. Are you a fool, Isaak?!”

“I refuse to live in fear, my Lady,” He finally walked into the room and began to remove his shirt, which he carelessly tossed onto a chair along the wall. “So why don’t you tell me, am I a fool?”

Yes! She wanted to scream, A big damned fool! Soon to be a dead one! But she bit her tongue. “So when you told me you would be careful, that you wouldn’t go out at night… you lied to me.” Her voice was soft and dangerous.

“No. I did not go out at night—I’m returning at night. I went out during the day. And see? I’m here safe in my room with you.” He took a confident step toward her. An invitation to let this go and enjoy his company as she’d originally intended.

Kasia sighed, running a hand over her face. She set aside the pillow, rose from the bed, and shuffled over to him. She slid her arms around his waist, pressing her forehead against his bare torso. "I care about you, Isaak. I fear for you. If they found your body like Bruno's, I'd… Well, I don't know what I would do."

“Hunt down the creature and exact revenge, I should hope.” He rested his hands on her shoulders. Big, strong hands; but mortal strength would never be enough. Not against creatures of darkness. But he was here, he was safe. She could worry later.

Kasia laughed softly, "Yes. Something like that. Now, come to bed my foolish, fearless woodsman."

“In a moment. I would like to appreciate the view for a moment.” His eyes devoured her form as she sat on the bed.

Kasia smiled and leaned back, posing for him. "Janine and Andrew want all of us to go to the beach tomorrow."

  “That does sound nice.”

Isaak slowly walked forward and dragged his fingertips along her figure. His fingers traced down her sides and poked just a little under the hem of her pants, touching her bare hip. He was testing the boundary, the rake! “You are gorgeous.” he murmured into the shell of her ear, “And my bed is far more pleasant like this.”

Kasia's face softened, "Thank you. If it didn't leave me so exhausted, I would be here every night." She held her arms open for him.

He laid down next to her and rested his head on her chest, “That is unfortunate. I guess we should make tonight last.”

Well, if we get married, we could spend every night together. Kasia thought to herself with a smile. She ran her fingers through his hair. "I'm spending all day with you tomorrow. Tonight I want to sleep in your arms." She squeezed him, drinking in the warmth of his skin pressed to hers.

They cuddled close and held each other through the dark night. At dawn, Kasia reluctantly slipped out, sneaking back into the castle so she would not be discovered.

“It’s not a full moon. We don’t need a babysitter!” Kasia whined to Captain Erik at the gate the next morning.

Erik looked at her amused, “Lord Commander’s orders, Katarzyna. You want to change them, take it up with him.”

Kasia sulked, “So where is Ivar?”

“Ivar is busy this week hunting the monster.” Said Hugo with a broad smile as he walked up to where Kasia was arguing with Erik, “I’ll be your warden today, Katarzya.”

Well that isn’t so bad. Hugo is nice, Kasia thought.

Janine and Andrew seemed to agree with the cheerful way they greeted him.

“Now, let’s go get stuffed.” Janine winked, waggling her eyebrows at Hugo who just growled and shook his head while muttering about sex-crazed teenagers.

Upon arriving at the inn, they spotted Isaak eating breakfast by himself. Kasia and her friends joined him.

“Hello, pretty man. I don't know if you remember us, but we are Kasia’s friends. I’m Janine and this is my lover-”

Andrew coughed hard at being introduced that way, “-Andrew.”

Isaak smirked, an impish glint in his eyes. He pointed at Andrew and then Janine. “Horny, and hornier, right? I know who you are. I’m sure the whole inn knows who you are.”

Kasia and Hugo burst out laughing and Isaak winked at them. Andrew flushed with embarrassment. Good. With how often Andrew and Janine teased her, it was good for someone to needle them for a change.

“Oh good, you do remember them!” Kasia put a comforting hand on Andrew’s arm as she wiped tears from her eyes.

Isaak looked over at the hunter that had been assigned to escort them.

Janine followed his gaze and grunted, “Babysitter.”

  “Still?” Isaak looked thoroughly amused.

“Still.” Hugo nodded, “And yet, they complain despite the Lord Commander’s generosity.” Hugo scowled down at them, “He could have just made all of you stay in the castle, ungrateful whelps.”

Janine stuck her tongue out at him.

“So here I am, taking time away from my training and work, to make sure these three can have a fun day. You didn’t even offer me a seat.” Hugo sniffed, offended.

“Hugo, would you like to have a seat with us?” Kasia smiled, moving closer to Isaak to make room for him.

“Does your father know just how old this boy you are seeing is?” Hugo narrowed his eyes at Isaak suspiciously.

Kasia scowled at him. “In that case- you can go sit by yourself. Over there. Waaaay over there.” folding her arms over her chest.

Hugo grinned, matching her pose. “He doesn’t, does he?” Hugo turned to Isaak. “Just so you know– this is the Lord Commander’s daughter. If you do anything- every knight in that castle will hunt you down and skin you. Well, what’s left of you after the Lord Commander is finished.”

Isaak leaned back in his chair with a shit-eating grin, “I’m aware.”

Kasia scowled at Hugo “Ja jebi? (fuck me / wtf), Hugo! You’re supposed to protect me from monsters, not suitors! ”

Hugo smiled at her, “Well when you find one, I’ll be certain to be on my best behavior. But all I see here is a randy old man– the worst kind of monster.”

“Will you slay the monster, Sir knight?” Isaak was still grinning as he mocked Hugo. “Has it done anything to offend you?”

Hugo grinned even wider, “Oh no, Sir. I would never deny the Lord Commander that pleasure.” He laughed heartily and walked off to order himself breakfast.

“So, ready to ditch Hugo and head to the cave?” Andrew asked brightly.

Kasia shook her head, “I think I’ve broken enough rules lately… I don’t want to push my luck.”

Janine and Andrew exchanged looks. Andrew turned to Isaak, “Okay, here’s the plan. We will distract Hugo- you grab stick-in-the mud here and take her to the cave. We’ll catch up once we’ve ditched Hugo.”

Kasia let out a cry of outrage, “Weren’t you just getting after me the other night about sneaking out and now you want to break a rule in front of Hugo?!”

“You really don’t see the difference between spending the day at the beach with your friends and all night with a scruffy vagrant?” Andrew raised an eyebrow at Kasia with a grin. “Which would you rather confess to if you knew that your father was on the other side of the curtain?”

“Scruffy?” Isaak protested, rubbing his stubble.

“He’s not a vagrant!” Kasia huffed, outraged. “He has a job! And I see your point…but breaking small rules is going to make things so much worse for me when he finds out the big ones I’ve been breaking, because then it’s a pattern!” Kasia demonstrated the pattern of her increasing delinquency with her hands for emphasis.

“Then we’re agreed. You broke bigger rules so the small ones are not a problem. Ready?” Andrew rose to his feet.

“No, we are not agreed! Pattern! I can’t have a pattern!” Kasia squawked.

“Come along quietly, or I’ll have to get rough.” Isaak purred into Kasia’s ear, sounding like he very much hoped she wouldn’t go quietly. “I’ve been waiting all morning for you…” His breath tickled her neck.

Heat coiled low in Kasia’s body and she felt her knees go weak. Isaak made eye contact with Andrew and nodded.

Andrew and Janine stood up immediately. “Bye Hugo! We’re gonna go find a nice quiet spot to fuck! Thanks for understanding!” and with that completely innocuous statement, he and Janine bolted from the inn.

Hugo leapt to his feet with a roar, turning to glare at Kasia. “YOU! Don’t you fucking move from that spot!” Then he ran after her friends, swearing loudly.

Isaak stood and held out his hand. “Coming, my pet? Or shall you remain a stick-in-the-mud?”

Kasia sighed, then a defiant gleam entered her eyes. She planted her feet, slouching in her chair, her arms still folded over her chest. “You go ahead if you like, I’m sure they’ll be better company. I am going to enjoy my day off and this breakfast.”

In a swift motion, with surprising strength, Isaak’s hand found her throat and pressed her back into the chair. “I will have your rest day, and your company.” He planted a heavy, possessive kiss on her lips. Kasia gasped and melted. Isaak used the opportunity to scoop her up and fling her over his shoulder. Whistling a jaunty tune, he carried Kasia from the inn.

Isaak took them swiftly to the woods. Kasia laughed and occasionally hollered at him over his shoulder. Once the village was out of sight, he finally put down the noisy female.

“Well,” he growled, “Now you’re in trouble, you might as well enjoy it.” He held out his hand for her to hold. “Shall we?”

Kasia smiled warmly, “Indeed I am. It is hardly my fault if I was kidnapped while trying to follow my Ojciek’s orders.” She eyed him hungrily, “And, it would seem I am at the mercy of a dangerous kidnapper… whatever are you going to do to me?” She ignored his outstretched hand and, with a musical giggle, she turned and ran deeper into the woods.

Kasia ran as fast as she could through the woods. She was small and nimble which made it easy to thread between the trees. Laughing, she looked back and saw Isaak chasing her, and was startled to see that he was gaining ground. Looking forward once more, she doubled her efforts. After about a minute of full sprinting she turned to look again and saw…nothing. Nothing?

Strange. Kasia stopped, listened, but couldn’t hear anything. She should have at least heard him running to try to catch up with her. A few seconds passed and she still couldn’t see him or hear him. He had looked like he was keeping up. How had she lost him? She became worried and slowly started to look around.

  “Isaak?”

She heard the snap of a twig behind her and spun around. No one. She heard the howl of wolves in the distance and remembered the beast. Her heart jumped into her throat. She had put herself in danger, but worse—what if she had gotten Isaak killed!?

She calmed herself, no, the beast only appeared at night. And I would have heard wolves attacking. Still, she couldn’t quite be at ease.

She heard the whistle of something flying through the air and a thunk as something hit the tree behind her. Again she spun around quickly, this time anticipating a threat. All she saw was a knife sticking out of the tree. Where the fuck did that come from?! She took a step back and found herself caught in strong arms that had wrapped around her torso, pinning her arms to her sides. They squeezed as she kicked at the legs of the person holding her.

When she started to feel the panic sink in, the arms let go, she was grabbed by her shoulder and spun around to see Isaak standing before her. His face was unmistakably excited, his eyes were piercing, and his smile looked like a predator who had cornered its prey.

“Isa…” She didn’t finish saying his name before he covered her mouth with one hand and with the other pushed her back towards the tree. He was aggressive, but moved slow enough to prevent her from stumbling backwards. Her back hit the tree and he pinned her against it. His hand continued to cover her mouth as the other one pulled the knife from the tree as though pulling a stick out of the sand.

  Fuck he’s strong…

He held it up to her throat and ever so slowly drew it across her neck, “Move, and you die.” He whispered with all the confidence of a practiced killer.

He shifted his grip and in a single powerful stroke cut her tunic from top to bottom. “You think that I’d be easy to kill? That I’m just some woodsman?”

Kasia shrieked indignantly against the hand covering her mouth, and attempted to shove him back.

  He obliged, releasing his grip.

“What the fuck?! I can’t go back to the castle like this!” she gestured to her now brazenly exposed chest. But she also couldn’t deny the excitement she had felt, the way her blood hummed with adrenaline. “You’re stealthy, I’ll give you that– but being able to cut open my tunic hardly means you’re capable of fighting a monster.”

She grabbed the wrist with the knife, holding it high so it wouldn’t accidentally injure either of them, then hooked her leg in the bend of his knee and took them to the ground straddling him. She squeezed at his wrist at the pressure point, trying to get the knife from him, while Isaak thrashed beneath her, trying to buck her off. They struggled, neither gaining ground. Isaak grabbed her with his free hand and, with a burst of strength, pushed her off him. He rolled on top of her and pressed the blade against her throat. His eyes flashed, a warning to remain still.

Looking at her with all the satisfaction of a hunter admiring his kill, he dragged the knife slowly between her breasts, then flicked the fabric of her tunic aside. He repeated the gesture on the other side, and her breasts were naked for his eyes.

“Perhaps. But you’re still here beneath me.” His voice was thick with desire. His legs held her tightly from each side.

“What?” Kasia asked dazedly, having completely forgotten what they had been talking about moments before. Oh right— he had been angry with her for saying that he wasn’t strong enough to face a monster. That was unkind, even if it was true. “I’m sorry if I made you feel…inadequate. I…” she struggled for words, “I care about you. Maybe a little more than care.” She felt more naked saying that than she did at having her breasts bared to the open sky.

"If you care about me, do not underestimate me, Kasia. Only fools would do that. Are you a fool, huntress?"

Kasia shook her head, "It won't happen again."

"Good. I have captured you, little lamb. How will you earn your freedom?" He purred as he brought the tip of the knife up underneath Kasia’s throat.

Kasia swallowed, her core throbbing with desire. She clenched her thighs together to relieve some of the pain. “What if I don’t want to be free?” she whispered, breathless.

Isaak’s smile grew wide, “Then give me your hands.”

Kasia nodded and held her hands up obediently. Isaak removed her shirt entirely and used it to bind her wrists above her head. He then took the blade and stabbed it through the center of the fabric, pinning her down.

With his own hands now free of the knife, Isaak began to caress her body, kneading her breasts and nipping at her neck, slowly making his way down. He paused and whispered, “I would take you here and now, you need only say the word.”

Kasia whimpered in longing, desire warring with her resolve. She wanted to give in; To feel him inside of her, opening for him. She wanted it so badly she almost said yes.

“I-I can’t.” she choked on the words. They were physically painful to say.

“You could.” He growled softly. Then he kissed her deeply. “I’ll have you yet, little lamb.”

He pulled the knife out of the earth and stood up. Kindly he held his hand out to her.

Kasia took his hand, letting him help her to her feet. You could. His words whispered in her ear again and again. Could she? No… maybe? She didn’t know. “I could. But what if I never do?” she challenged him with a defiant slant to her lips.

“Then you’ll regret it your entire life. And I likely will as well.” He replied. “You’ll always wonder what a night with me would have been like. Our bodies touching. Our lips intertwined. Our souls joined for a night.”

He pulled his tunic off, revealing his wondrously sculpted torso. “But I don’t think that you’ll live with regret.” He gave her a cocky smile.

“That’s not the part I struggle with,” Kasia smiled at him, but it was tinged with sadness, “It’s the thought of our souls separating that causes me pain. That’s what I would regret… would you? If it’s as wonderful as you say it is, how can you leave?” Kasia was genuinely curious about his answer. Everyone seemed to agree that sex was a transcendent experience… So how could you share that with someone and then walk away?

“I’m not looking for love, Kasia. But I’m not running away from it either. You are a beautiful woman. I’ve had my eyes on you since I arrived. I wish to give you a wonderful experience. That is all that I can promise you.” Isaak spoke kindly to her. “I have desires. And right now, every one of them involves you. I want to make memories with you. And I would regret it if I didn’t get to. But Andrew and Janine must be worried that we got caught by the babysitter.”

Kasia smiled, wrapping her arms around his waist, resting her chin on his chest as she looked up at him. “Nice try. But you can’t distract me that easily. I am looking for love, Isaak. And you didn’t answer my question. How can you share your soul with someone and then leave and never see them again?”

Isaak sighed, his lips quirking slightly, “You are damned persistent. Very well, I take the memories with me. Cherished and loved. Tell me, huntress, your prey is in sight. Your arrow is notched. The string is pulled back. All you have to do is let go. Would you decide not to make the kill wondering if a bigger dear were nearby? Or would you feed your hunger?”

Kasia kissed his chest, humming. “I am not trying to persuade you, darling man. I am trying to understand you. I will think on what you have said.” She stood on her tiptoes, reaching for his lips.

He leaned down and kissed her passionately. His arms picked her up to help her reach his lips. “I am afraid that my honesty will drive you away and I will regret it forever.”

“I love your honesty, Isaak. It is one of my favorite things about you. It tells me that I can trust you. Please— don’t ever lie to me.” Kasia whispered against his lips as she kissed him. “Now come along, we could be kissing in a cave instead of a forest!” she giggled, slipping out of his arms.

Then she paused, looking down at her bare breasts. “This is a problem. I know you disagree, but I really can’t go around like this.”

“You’re radiant, naked in a forest.” He handed her his tunic. “That’s what this is for.”

Kasia’s eyes sparkled with happiness. No one had ever made her feel as beautiful as he had. She took his tunic and slipped it on. “Just to be clear, I’m keeping this.” her eyes crinkled with mirth, “I want to wear your scent.” she bunched up the collar and held it close to her nose, inhaling. Winter pines. Aged Leather. And mead. Delicious.

“What will I wear if you steal my clothes? I can’t very well be constantly shirtless.” He smirked at her. “I don’t have the riches of a castle.”

It was true that he owned very little.

Kasia pouted. “I will buy you a new one. There is a tailor in the village. He could use the business.”

“You’ll spoil me, princess.” He mocked her for living in the castle.

Kasia’s eyes lit with delight at the thought, “Well I am courting you, Sir! Is it not traditional to bestow gifts upon the subject of your desire? And I desire you very much.”

“I look forward to your gifts, my lady.” he chuckled.

Kasia proudly wore Isaak’s tunic, while he, himself walked comfortably bare chested. She couldn’t take her eyes off of him, a fact that left him extremely smug, judging by the arrogant smile he couldn't seem to lose.

They headed to the cave, Janine and Andrew arrived not long after. No one had to wonder what had taken them so long to arrive. Kasia was glad for them. Janine was ogling Isaak shamelessly, which he seemed to find quite amusing. Andrew struggled to be good natured about it, but Kasia could tell it bothered him.

“Maybe Kasia should give his shirt back so I can stare at her chest without blinking. See how you like it.” Andrew muttered angrily.

Isaak stared intensely at Kasia, “Do it.” He smiled seductively.

Kasia raised her eyebrow, surprised “Oh? You do not mind if I show myself to other men? Not the jealous type then?”

“Such beautiful breasts should be shown and admired.” Isaak crooned, “Why would I be jealous that others see how beautiful you are?”

Janine laughed, “Nice try, but this is the girl who screams and covers her ears whenever Andrew and I talk about sex.” Her eyes met Kasia’s, and there was a challenge in her smirking features.

That was what did it. Kasia set her jaw and grabbed the hem of Isaak’s tunic, intent on tearing it off.

Janine’s eyes went wide with shock and she lurched forward to pin Kasia's hands, stopping her.

After a moment, her face broke out into a wide grin. “Who are you and what have you done with Kasia?!” Her eyes flicked to Isaak, “The better question, I think, is what have you done to our Kasia?” Janine cackled with delight. She turned to Andrew, tilting her head thoughtfully. “Hmm… that doesn’t feel great, I’ll admit. I’m sorry Andrew.” and she pecked his cheek.

“Well then it's your turn.” Isaak purred with delight, “Your lover,” he teased, using the moniker Janine had used to introduce Andrew earlier, “is the jealous type. I’ll start staring and he’ll fight me off.” Isaak winked.

Janine laughed and tutted, shaking her head, “Now now, you lecher. I think we’ve teased my man enough for one day.”

Kasia didn’t love that Isaak had just asked to see Janine’s breasts… It made her feel like any breasts would do— that he wanted anyone’s body. He was with her only because she had just been the first to give in.

Doubt flickered in her heart. She pulled the blanket up over her chest, even though she was still fully clothed. She wasn’t sure yet if she liked who she was when Isaak was around. She was bolder, but at the same time insecure in a way that she hadn’t felt since she had seen Louis with that village girl. Sometimes she was certain she could woo him and make him love her, and other days she felt utterly hopeless that she would ever be enough to make him stay.

He made her impulsive and rash— which was fun, but also got her into trouble…When he was with her, if he asked her to jump, she had the boldness and desire to find the largest cliff before leaping… but when he was gone, she had to face the bottom of that jump alone.

Isaak, oblivious to Kasia's internal distress, asked, “So… does anyone else know about your little cave here?” Isaak asked thoughtfully.

“Probably. I’m sure my father knows, but pretends not to so we don’t try to find somewhere new. Some of the knights must know as well. Hugo might even know, but he’s afraid of heights.” Kasia chuckled, leaning back between Isaak’s legs to snuggle into his chest. “Honestly? He might not even be able to swim.”

  They all laughed at that.

“How long have the two of you lived at the castle? Are you also the children of hunters?”

“My step-father is. That’s how most of the women get in, by having a parent who is a knight. Not a lot of farmers are eager for their daughters going off to slay monsters.” Janine chuckled.

“Andrew, here, is a local though. An adorable farm boy.”

“I have a black thumb. I thought I’d put my destructive powers to good use.” He grinned.

“Does it get cramped in there? It doesn’t look like the largest castle and apparently you have to live there. How many hunters are there?” Isaak continued to look at Andrew and Janine with open curiosity. He began to rub his hands along Kasia’s arms.

Andrew frowned, looking slightly uncomfortable with the question. “Uh, I don’t know, a lot?”

“You must have seen some very fancy castles in your travels, Isaak, if you think ours is cramped. We live quite comfortably, I think.” Kasia tutted.

“Most castles I’ve seen could easily house several hundred people. There was one that I would guess could even hold a thousand. I meant no offense by the question. Yours gives the appearance more of a fortress. Sturdy, made of good stone–ideal for a siege.”

“A fortress is probably a better description of it. We are knights and hunters, not kings and Lords. Though there might be nobles among us, they are not held in higher esteem than anyone else. At least, they aren’t supposed to be.” Andrew answered

“So Janine and Kasia grew up there. I bet you know all the secret pathways of such a marvel.” He nudged Kasia and smiled playfully.

“Only Kasia has actually lived in the castle. I live with my Matka and Ojczym (step-father).

“Alright, princess,” Isaak grinned, “What did you get to see that the rest of us peasants can only dream of?”

Kasia smiled conspiratorially, “Wouldn't you like to know?” But she did not answer him. Those secrets were important for the safety of the castle.

Isaak laughed and let the subject drop.

On the walk back to the village Isaak took Kasia’s hand and slowed her down to gain distance from Andrew and Janine.

  “Are you upset with me?”

Andrew and Janine happily walked hand in hand ahead of them. They were cloud gazing. They’d point up at the sky, talk and laugh as different clouds flew by.

Kasia was still wearing Isaak’s shirt, as she did not wish to walk home wearing a blanket. She liked that it smelled like him. She decided she might buy him a couple shirts as well, so he could swap them out to keep them smelling like him. Was that weird? It was probably weird…

He came to a stop and turned her to face him. “I noticed that you became embarrassed during our game. You were having fun, and then you weren’t. What went wrong?”

“Oh.” Kasia shifted uncomfortably at the memory of how brazen she’d been, “Yeah… I’ve never really…done that kind of stuff before. It’s new to me and I’m deciding how I feel. If I like the person I am when I'm with you. And… I felt jealous when you asked to see Janine's breasts… it made me feel like I'm just a warm body to you.” she sighed.

“Oh.” Isaak replied softly, his expression turning pensive as he considered her words. After a moment he said, “I’m sorry. It didn’t mean anything. And a warm body I can find anywhere. Your company is what I desire. Your warm body. Forgive me if I overstepped during our game.”

The tension inside Kasia’s body softened and she bumped her shoulder into him affectionately. "Thank you. Hey, Would it bother you if I entertained other suitors? Are—are you seeing other women?"

“Would you be bothered if I was? Answer truthfully.” He smiled slyly. “Besides, why would you want to?” He spread his arms so that she could see how handsome he was, how burly and strong. His muscles were leaner than the hunting dogs. “I’m a dream come true.”

“Of course it would bother me, but you have been very upfront and honest with me about where we stand– and I am extremely grateful for that. I really value honesty. I just feel like I would have an easier time ‘having fun’ as you say, if I could spread out my affections a little more… I feel like if I’m not careful, I’m going to fall in love with you– and I’m pretty sure you’re never going to want me as more than something fun. And that’s okay. I just… I’m trying to figure out how to give you what you want- what we both want, without getting really hurt.”

Isaak looked thoughtful again, “What is it that you want, if you had no fear of the pain that might follow? Do you think Andrew holds back in case Janine will not reciprocate? What if I could love you? You will never know if you hold back. And if I don’t then, then you had fun, and learned some lessons to take into your next pursuit.”

He tapped a finger against his lip, then his eyes lit up with an idea, “I’ve got it! If you were hunting a werewolf, and escape was impossible, would you surrender to the beast and die the moment you felt fear?”

“Out of curiosity, why did you pick a werewolf?” Kasia was surprised at the choice of monster. Could he have known what had happened under the full moon?

“A stray thought. Why?” He looked absent as he said it.

“Well you're a woodsman, I would just think you would pick something that you were more likely to run into like a bear.”

“Ah but you are a huntress and are more likely to run into a monster.”

Still kind of odd, Kasia thought, But okay.

“All I'm saying,” he continued, “is that if you want someone to love you you're going to have to be vulnerable.” He chuckled a little and then said, “I'm putting myself out there. Maybe you’ll break my heart. Have you considered that?”

"Yes I can see how distraught you are agonizing over whether or not I’ll love you." Kasia rolled her eyes. "So are you saying that you don't want me to see other people?"

“Maybe it is.” He shrugged a big shoulder, “I've already spent all of your rest days with you. I'd be a little sad if I didn't get to spend the future ones with you.”

Kasia frowned and thought for a moment. "And if it did not affect you seeing me on my rest days, would you still give me the same answer?"

Isaak hummed while he considered her question. "You are not mine yet, thus you are free to seek the company of anyone you choose. But from what you have told me, that you think you could love me? If that’s true, I think you would be doing yourself a disservice."

Kasia nodded. Being exclusive with him. Saying no to all others… not that there were any others vying for her hand other than Wojciek. "I need to think about it."

"Of course my pet." And he lifted her hand to kiss it.

"What's taking you fuckers so long?!" Andrew hollered behind him from where he and Janine were far ahead.

Kasia rolled her eyes and didn't reply. "Will you be seeing other people, or are you only seeing me?"

"You are the only one who has caught my eye."

Kasia smirked up at him. "You are the master of giving non-answers. Consider me impressed."

"How is that a non answer?" He growled playfully.

'Because it does not tell me if someone else were to catch your eye, if you would pursue us both, or remain interested in your first target."

"When you hunt a deer, do you focus or do you allow yourself to become distracted?"

"Honestly, if I was hunting, and my goal was to feed my family and an easier target presented itself that would feed them just as well, I would abandon the first quarry for the second. If I was hunting for the pleasure of the chase, to test my skill, then I would want the hunt that would bring me the most satisfaction and pleasure for having accomplished it. So… I guess I'm asking- are you just looking for a pretty body to warm your bed, or are you looking for a meaningful relationship?"

“So young.” he crooned, reaching up to caress her cheek, “Never take your eye off the prey, lest you lose both.” Isaaks’ eyes lit up with excitement. “I am on the hunt, my pet. Are you?” He smiled as he turned and began to slowly walk away.

Kasia bit her lip, watching his butt as he walked away… that man. He drove her wild. She ran up behind him and jumped into his back, leaning over his shoulder to nip his ear before settling herself into a comfy piggyback position. “Never take your eyes off the prey,” she purred into his ear.

Janine and Andrew had grown impatient waiting for them to catch up and simply stopped until they reached them.

They returned to the inn, finding a very angry Hugo inside.

“The only reason I haven’t gone straight to your Ojciek is because my punishment for losing three initiates would be so much harsher than yours!! But mark my words- pull anything like that with me again, and I don’t care if it sends me to the gallows, I’ll drag all three of you before the Lord Commander!”

“Sorry, Hugo.” The three of them apologized.

“Oho No! It’s not ‘Hugo’ anymore– you lost that privilege. “It is Sir Gromnicki to you! And we go back now! Free day is over! I am done with you little shits!”

Kasia turned to Isaak. “Thank you for today. For being patient with me and helping me let go. Let’s play with fire. I will savor the burns.” She kissed his cheek and slid down from his back to follow the enraged knight back to the castle.

After dropping the initiates off, Hugo went to go see the Lord Commander.

"Lord Commander,” Hugo saluted, “You wanted to know about the boy Kasia is seeing? Well, he's no boy…" Hugo chuckled uncomfortably.

"A girl?!" Jon raised an eyebrow, surprised.

Hugo blanched, "Uh, no… he's a man. Like— a grown man. Gotta be at least fifteen years her senior, if not more."

The Lord Commander's face turned red as cooked lobster. "She's what?! Seeing a man twice her age!!!?"

Hugo held his hands up defensively, "I'm just the messenger, my Lord."

"And now you'll be my sparring partner until I've figured out how to not kill both of them." He growled. "Fetch your armor, you'll need it."

Hugo groaned and nodded, muttering about shooting the messenger as he left to get ready.

Hugo returned beaten and bruised from several hours of sparring with the Lord Commander. The man was a bear. Hugo wasn't a slouch, he managed to get a good many blows on the Lord Commander. But none of them were vital, match winning. The Lord Commander had shrugged off the blows as if they were nothing.

Hugo was hurt, but he had to admit that he had had fun. There was much to learn from that man.

There was an impatient rap on Isaak's door. It woke him from the loveliest dream. Kasia was gleefully running through the forest nude while he, the werewolf, chased her. He was about to have his fun when the noise woke him.

Cursing the impatience of mortals he answered the door. "Is there good reason to wake me at this accursed hour?"

"The Lord Commander extends an invitation to breakfast. Please come with me."

"I'm good. The food served here is pleasant. Tell the 'Lord Commander' that he can find me here."

"Sir, I would prefer to be polite. I am only a messenger. But there are 6 hunters downstairs who will insist that you accept the invitation. Now please, put on clothing and follow me."

Isaak grumbled as he walked his naked ass back into his room to dress.

The sun still had not risen by the time Isaak was seated in a small dining hall. Two of the hunters remained and kept an eye on him. Isaak got comfortable and put his feet up on the table to relax. He had never cared for excessive manners. Vampires were pompous and vain. He needed only to kill a man to feel satisfied. He didn't need to look down on him first.

Finally, after a little over an hour, Kasia walked through the door. A smile spread across her face at the sight of him, which then morphed to horror realizing where they were.

Isaak just smiled that devilishly at her and patted his lap.

Kasia blanched and shook her head vehemently. She hurried to his side.

"What the fuck are you doing here?!" She hissed, "Please tell me you are just here delivering wood and this is just a coincidence!"

"Honestly, I wish." Then he leaned in and whispered in her ear, "It's not too late for me to be— which way to your bedroom?"

Kasia hit him in the chest, "I’m being serious! What are you doing here?"

Isaak shrugged. "I was summoned by the Lord Commander. I decided to see what he wants."

"Oh nooo…Ja jebi?…Kurwa ma?!" Kasia swore. She looked back to Isaak, eyes wild with panic, "I don't suppose you'd behave just because I asked you to?”

“Do you expect me not to?” He gave Kasia a boyish smile.

“Given how you have responded to Ivar and Hugo, that’s exactly what I expect. So please?”

“And ruin your expectations? I’d hate to disappoint.”

Kasia placed her hands on his shoulders, squeezing them while she pleaded desperately with her eyes, “Please! You have denied me everything I have requested before now, but please do not deny me this!”

Isaak still wore his cocky smile. “This is what I came here for. To meet the Lord Commander.”

Kasia slumped into the chair beside him, leaning over the table, head buried in her arms in defeat. “Why must you make my life so difficult? I’ll make you pay for this—mark my words.”

His smile turned from cocky to mischievous. “I hope that you do.”
