Chapter 9 – Elite Battle

Uruvi split her 5 attribute points evenly to upgrade her Strength, Renewal, Valor, Dynamism, and Serenity. ‘I wonder if I will get more peace of mind with this one…’ she wondered in jest.

Skill and Spell were a little trickier. There were two more options for her in body, one in mind, and she had yet to open up the spirit skill tree. She pondered on it for a few more minutes and finally decided to upgrade the Calm Mind skill and a new spell, Thunderclap.

She looked at the door that led her upstairs to the final floor of the building. It was where the heads of the company worked from, and it was a very fancy place. The management had spent lavishly to make the place look like it was straight out of Silicon Valley.

Her robot had told her that there were more humans on the last floor. ‘It seems like the worse the human, the better their chances of survival.’ She let out a loud grunt and proceeded through the door. ‘Don’t overthink. Kill monsters, level up.’

Peeking through the window revealed the Pisacha to be crowded in a small place. It was the waiting room that separated the floor space into two by solid brick walls. The space on the left was where the tech leadership worked out of. The space on the right was where the management leadership worked out of. The doors to the left were busted open, but the doors on the right weren’t, but they looked beaten up. ‘I guess that is where others are hiding.’

She quickly took a headcount of the monsters. There were six Level 4 monsters and one Level 5 monster. Her odds were looking grim. It was not just the number, but the place was too small for a proper fight. She wondered if she could draw them into the left wing and take them on one after another. ‘Yeah… that is a solid plan…’

“Warning! Elite enemy detected,” said the robot.

‘Elite enemy? You mean the Level 5 Pisacha?’

  “Affirmative.”

She took another look at it. ‘I guess it looks even more human. But why is it elite?’

“Elite enemies have higher HP and Attack. They also have more intelligence and can command lower-level enemies.”

She was speechless. So much was being dumped onto her at once that it felt unfair. ‘Are you kidding me? Six of those and an enemy who is basically a human in a monster’s body. Who even designed this?’

“Battle still plausible. Suggestion, kill lower enemies first.”

‘No shit, Sherlock.’ She looked down at her hockey stick. It was scuffed pretty badly. The surface was scratched up. She wasn’t sure how much longer it would hold up. But at the moment, she didn’t have a better option. She exhaled and loosened her shoulder before casting Calm Mind.

She grabbed the handle and pulled it down, swinging the door open and slipping in. Before the monsters could even tell she had entered, she placed herself at the entrance of the left wing. ‘You want me? Come and get me.’

She watched them turn towards her, but instead of aggressively chasing after her, they just watched. It was odd, very odd. The Elite Pisacha turned to face her. It lifted its arm up and flicked its hand. On command, two of the Pisacha lunged forward.

She quickly spun around and dashed through the door. It led into a narrow hallway with cabins lining each side. The hallway would then take two sharp right turns before exiting back into the waiting area. She took a quick look behind her to see only one Pisacha behind.

‘Where is the other one?’ It didn’t take her long to realize where it was. ‘Fucking hell. These things are getting way too smart!’

She came to a stop at the corner and turned around to face the Pisacha behind her. It lunged at her, thrusting its claw forward. She parried it with ease and slammed the J end of the bat into its face. The monsters staggered back before taking a swing at her again, but she ducked underneath the arc. A golden hue surrounded her as she swung the bat up, smashing the Pisacha’s head. She saw its health fall into the red.

Just then, the second Pisacha showed up at the end of the hallway.

“Ah! You are late,” she said, as she watched it run towards her.

The monster before her tried to take another swing, only to be swiped towards its fellow mate.

“Domino!” she shouted as she smashed the Pisacha’s head, and the hit was transferred to the second Pisacha, who staggered back in recoil.

She proceeded to deliver a flurry of hits, relentlessly, chipping away at its health bar. She finished it up with a Charge hit to its face, sending it back onto the floor before it turned to dust.

‘These were damn easy. I wonder…’ She looked at her screen and saw the XP bar reach about 80 percent. ‘That is a lot of XP. I need to kill just one more.’ A smirk appeared on her face.

She walked up to the entrance once again, full of confidence and a little bit of sass. She leaned against the doorframe, resting upon her arm. The monsters remained unmoved, standing still, like statues.

“What now? Who is next?” she said.

The Elite stepped forward, pushing his way towards her. She immediately lost her composure on seeing it approach her.

‘So, you want to take a swing, huh?’ She felt its intimidation hit her like a truck. But her Calm Mind spell was doing its job, protecting her. She stepped back into the hallway, letting it push her a little further in.

It was strangely calm. It didn’t act aggressively, trying to swipe at her with attacks. Instead, it simply pushed her further down the hallway.

Just as they reached about halfway through the hallway, she took a swing, smacking it with an uppercut, and seemingly did no damage. Its health bar barely budged, while it continued to push her. She threw in a few more hits, forced to hit it at an angle as a fully horizontal swipe was nearly impossible.

They reached a corner, where she had to take a sharp right. She looked back, hoping that there wasn’t another Pisacha waiting for her. There wasn’t any. She immediately understood its play. ‘It is trying to force me back into the hall!’

Her eyes looked up to see if she had enough space to leap over it. However, it looked like the monster caught wind of this idea. It immediately started swiping its arms, smashing the doors and windows along the way.

Uruvi found herself in a no-win scenario; she turned around and dashed through the hallway, with the monster giving her chase. As she exited the door, she turned to face the other door, only to find it blocked by two of the lower-level Pisacha. She smirked. ‘You think you can keep me away from there?’

The elite monster rushed out of the door, charging at her. She leapt forward, dodging the attack just in time. As she scrambled to get onto her feet, she felt sharp claws dig into her shoulder. She let out a loud cry, inviting an audible gasp from the inside.

She swiped at the two pairs of legs in front of her, bringing the monster down onto the floor. However, it did not let her go. It began to dig its claws in, sending blinding pain through her body. She lifted her bat up, ready to bring it down on the monster’s head, when the Elite suddenly grabbed it and tried to yank it out of her hand.

She tightened her grip and was pulled up with the bat. She was surprised that she was still able to hold on. The pisacha, who had dug its claws into her, followed her. She held her nerves, waiting for it to rise above the ground. “Thunderclap!” she shouted. White light shone from her body before an ear-piercing explosion filled the air, sending a shockwave out from her body.

Thunderclap – Sends out a shockwave, dealing damage of 150 percent of the attack to all the enemies. MP – 30. Cooldown – 20 seconds.

The lesser Pisacha was thrown into the air while the Elite staggered backwards; its grip on the bat remained firm.

The two were caught in a tug of war, neither ready to let go, until the bat finally gave up. A soft crack was followed by a solid crunch, with wood splinters scattering in the air. Thrown in the process, she slammed into the glass door. She managed to stay on her feet, biting through the pain in her shoulder blade. She looked down at her broken bat in complete shock. ‘What now? I don’t have a weapon!’

“Weapon – Broken Bat [Blunt Weapon] +6 Attack,” said the robot.

“Are you kidding me right now?” she said. She looked up to see the Elite grabbing the edge of the reception desk. With one heave, it lifted the entire desk and threw it towards her. She quickly leapt out of its way as it crashed through the door and the furniture that was used to barricade it.

Loud cries erupted from the inside.

“They broke the door!” cried one of the humans. Panic seemed to have set in as there were a lot of mummers and mumbles coming from the inside.

As she laid on the floor, she looked up at the Elite, who appeared to have a sharp grin. He began to walk towards the door when she threw herself at it, only to be smacked back. She flew across the hall and landed on the coffee table, flattening it.

She gathered herself quickly but found herself surrounded by the smaller Pisacha. Her sight shifted towards the door, where she could see the inhabitants stacking the furniture back as the Elite repeatedly knocked them down.

“Get back here, you bastard!” she cried out.

‘I can’t let it kill them…’ She found herself telling. ‘Think Uruvi… Taunt! Taunt will work, right, Robot?’

“Negative. Target enemy out of range. Get closer before casting.”

“I need a weapon, damn it!” Uruvi cried out.

“Reach Level 5 for a weapon,” said the robot.

‘Level 5… level 5…’ She looked at the screen and saw that she was just one enemy defeat away from hitting the mark.

The lower monsters gathered around her; their health bars had been drained down to less than half. ‘One more. Just one more attack.’

She pushed herself up, just as a Pisacha to her right leapt on her. A red aura mixed with flashes of gold surrounded her as she gripped her bat tightly. As the Pisacha reached her, she thrust it up, smashing its jaw with the broken edge of the bat. The Pisacha’s face cracked open as it flew back onto the ground.

Her XP bar shot up, filling up the empty space.

“New Level attained. 10 Attribute points, 2 skill points, 2 spell points gained…,” said the robot.

“Give me the weapon robot!” she said, interrupting the announcement.

The screen widened, and five weapons appeared on it. “Please pick a weapon,” said the robot.

The Elite smashed the furniture, creating a gaping hole. Two of the Pisacha dashed towards the door, hungry for prey, as the Elite stepped aside.

The cries intensified, and so did her anxiety. Her eyes met the image of an axe, and she shouted, “axe! Get me the axe!”

  “Affirmative.”

The other lower Pisacha jumped at her, face-first, when a white light appeared before it. The white light gathered, solidifying into the shape of an axe, before dropping onto the Pisacha, slamming it down onto the ground.

Uruvi looked at the weapon with awestruck eyes. It had a dull black blade with a silver-shiny edge. The handle was short and covered in dull golden runes. She pushed herself off the broken table and stood above the Pisacha, who was trying to get back up. She placed her hand on the handle gently before gripping and thrusting it downwards into the Pisacha’s head. Its head split open, and its limbs stopped struggling.

She lifted it and felt its weight pull down on her arm, yet it felt just right. She lunged forward and shot past one of the lesser Pisacha, rushing towards the one that stood before the door. In one swing, she cleaved the monster’s torso into two. The blade cut through the body of the monster like it was made of butter. A wide grin appeared on her face as she spun around and cut the last of the lesser Pisacha’s head.

The Elite did not seem to have registered what happened. It looked down at the decaying monsters before turning towards Urvui, who stood before it, grinning. It growled like a mad dog before letting out a loud roar.

“That’s right, bastard, now… we dance!”
