Chapter 4 - Too much power

The way back home was filled with talking, mostly between Madison and the three new children. David had been allowed to sit at the front since they weren’t considered missing yet and Madison didn’t see it as smart to put David next to Angelica seeing how their dreams played out. Most of the questions being asked were nothing new to Jones, things he asked as well, though that didn’t mean that he didn’t have any more questions.

Then he sat up straight in his chair, waiting for everyone to be quiet for a second. “How come that they are much more focused on their dreams than me? Zoi over here didn’t even know his name.”

His question, while being good, didn’t get answered as Madison didn’t know it herself. “Not sure, as you know, I barely know more than you do. Maybe because some immensely powerful being was their creator? Or maybe it differs from dream to dream?”

Since nobody had a clear answer, nobody tried to go further into it, making it dead still. Though Madison didn’t seem to want to keep it nice and easy, looking to her right at David. “So, infinite power right? Can you then create something for me?”

David didn’t expect her to ask that of him, not really sure what he had been expecting. “Create something? Like what?”

“How about… How about some food for all of us? This way I don’t have to stop at a gas station or something like that.”

“Ah, food.” He looked back at Angelica. “We don't eat.”

“You don't? All three of you don't eat?” She sounded very surprised, looking at Zoi as he was different than them.

“I do eat, I just have eaten the same bland boring thing for thousands of years so if possible, something else than dry bread and potatoes.”

Madison looked to either of the two extremely powerful people. “So can food be made or is it something you can't do?”

Just as she was done talking, a bunch of burgers and fries landed on David’s lap, being conjured there by Angelica. “There, food. It was easier than I expected. I didn't even need to try.”

Quickly, the food got shared between all of them, giving everyone whatever they wanted with Angelica and David just nibbling on some fries for the taste.

The rest of the drive was quiet with people eating or thinking. Everyone except Zoi who was looking outside like a happy dog would. There was only corn to be seen but after being stuck in a room with only candles for thousands of years, it seemed normal to be excited by the sight of even just cornfields.

When they got home, Madison led the three inside, appointing everyone a room before giving them all the rule of not waking her up unless it’s an emergency.

David and Angelica got the rooms furthest away from each other as Zoi joined Jones in the living room to look at the television. It was a bit weird to him as in his mind, he was more Zoi than Zack. The memories that any normal person were supposed to have seemed to be suppressed and therefore he lost a lot of knowledge.

Zoi turned to Jones, not thinking that he’d know but he could at least ask. “You think I could get my memories from my original life back? For now I’m unable to focus on everything I’m seeing right now.”

“Oh? Euhm… Well with me it was the other way around. I was mostly my original person and the more I slept, the closer I got to the cloud self. Now I’m around half? I feel sadness for both families that I lost but also a lack of care for the other since they’re not my actual family if you know what I mean.”

While weird, he could almost see what he was saying, nodding slowly. “Yeah… so just give it time.” Until that time came, he zapped through the different channels after Jones told him how to, watching news after news.

With Zoi being busy, Jones got back up to go outside again, looking up at the sky. There were only a couple of clouds but all far away. He was feeling rather weak at this point, having only the ability to control clouds while the other two could do anything they wanted.

Perhaps if the time was right, he could ask one of the two for some kind of machine that could create clouds for him. Maybe a cloud grenade? That was something he had to think about before asking.

That got him on another path, going back to the garage and looking for any time of grenades. It took a while, not being used to all this military grade stuff besides the games that he played. After a bit, he found a smoke grenade, grabbing it and walking outside.

He took out the pin and threw the grenade, watching it shoot out a smoke. To be sure, he waited until enough smoke had come out before trying to control it, but nothing came of it. “If smoke doesn’t work then maybe that cloud grenade doesn’t work.”

Since he had gotten the dream, he also had started to think more freely, wanting to find the weak points in this building. In his dream, he had to escape terrorists while being stuck in a cloud prison so maybe it wasn’t that bad of an idea to figure out what could shut down this palace of a modern place.

The longer that he walked around, the more he figured out that he wasn't needed by Madison anymore. She had her new toys to play with which he didn't mind that much.

As he got deeper and deeper in the house, he eventually managed to stumble upon a basement. The entrance was just an unsuspecting door in one of the numerous hallways. Down in the dark depths, he heard some machines running.

At first he wondered if this was perhaps all a lie with this woman having made these machines that changed how people worked. That idea was quickly thrown away as the thought of electricity came to him.

He hadn't seen powerlines running towards this building and unless there were kilometers of powerlines under the ground, this place had a different power source. After going down into the basement, he found what he had thought it to be. There were a couple of machines standing here with most being turned off.

Loud thumping could be heard from the one in the back. When inspecting it, he saw that these were generators so that the house was off the grid. On the left against the wall seemed to be a couple of barrels with a date on them, presumably gasoline. Not only that, there also seemed to be some kind of shaft leading up towards a hatch, probably where she lets them in.

Having seen what he wanted, he knew the weakness of this house and he had no idea how to operate all of this. The longer that he walked around alone, the less that he started to believe in what was happening over here.

“David shouldn’t be here.” Said Jones while going up the stairs, closing the door behind him and getting a bit nervous. If he was wrong, then having two all-powerful beings could be amazing but the fact that they’re much more connected to their dreams didn’t make things better.

While walking back towards the living room, David appeared in front of him. His eyes shooting around the hall before landing on Jones. “Aaah, there you are. Madison was looking for you. She wants us outside for some training.”

Before Jones could ask to be teleported with him, David already disappeared, leaving Jones to leave this maze of a house.

It took a while but once outside, he saw everyone standing next to each other with multiple things lying down on tables. These tables seemed to be new so he could only guess where they came from, probably conjured out of nowhere. Now he started to question himself. Was he just angry and envious about their power compared to him or was his distrust actually justified?

Whatever it was, he had to focus, looking up at the sky to see more clouds in the sky than before.

“Yeah, I summoned some natural clouds for you.” Angelica seemed happy about it, looking up at the sky as well. “Thought you might need some to train.”

With a nice gesture and thoughtfulness like that, he was a bit upset at himself for thinking so bad of them. Although for now David was still someone to be careful off. “Thanks Angelica.”

With little effort, he brought one down towards the group, putting them in a shade as he waited to be ordered to do something.

Madison wasn't focused on him though, grabbing a weapon that Jones immediately recognized. “Flammenwherfer?”

Him saying that surprised Madison a lot, looking from it to him. “Yeah, how did you know that it was a German flamethrower?”

“I didn't know it was German. I just recognized it from one of my games where it was used.”

As both Jones and Madison knew what had happened in the dream, both knew what she was planning as she lowered the weapon, aiming it at Zoi.

The sudden movement didn't really scare anyone as everyone here knew about his ability. She started to douse Zoi in flames, watching as he didn't really react to the fire.

Madison did seem to have too much fun with it, continuing to fire it at him for a good while before finally stopping.

Zoi never really spend an actual long time in the fire, not even now. But when the fire stopped coming from the flamethrower, his clothes were still ablaze.

“Hey, wow! Douse me before I'm naked!” He tried to douse it himself by hitting the fire, not really doing much.

Angelica looked at him, dousing him and restoring his clothes without even blinking. This only showed how strong both Angelica and David were, feeding into Jones’ distrust.

Before he could voice it, Madison seemed to get more excited, looking at the both of them. “If you two can do anything, then could you maybe try to change everyone's minds into believing we exist? Make them see our dreams so that they have the same knowledge as us.”

While interesting as an idea, both Angelica and David looked at each other. At first, nothing happened, both just looking before both their eyes changed color. Angelica got white and David red as the air around them got heated and cold at the same time.

A blast blew everyone away with Jones getting flung into the garage. Of everyone, he was the most lucky as Madison hit the wall and didn't move anymore as Zoi disappeared into the forest.

He quickly got back up, bringing down the cloud and making it solid, getting in front of both him and Madison as small explosions like fire crackers happened all around Angelica and David.

That's when all hell broke loose. Out of nowhere, gravity got flipped for just a second, flinging him back inside the garage before water filled everything and everywhere he could see. A strong wind appeared, ripping his cloud to pieces as he got a clear view of the two again.

They were slowly floating up into the sky, looking at each other as things like knives, rocks, lasers and all flew past each other. For each attack that one did, the other had an answer, redirecting everything or just simply removing threats.

Jones had no idea what to do against being like this, seeing a small explosion break down the front door. If anything were to go south and accidentally hit Madison or himself, things might get unstoppably bad.

Not knowing how much that his powers could help, he made his cloud go down towards the two, making it more and more dense before wrapping around in a big orb around the two. It managed to stop some of the attacks, but others still broke through, going through his orb and some even landing right next to him.

It didn’t matter how fast he repaired his orb, they broke it faster and were stronger than anything that he could do. That’s also when things got worse as David appeared in front of him, grabbing him by his ankle and turning him upside down before just casually throwing him away.

Angelica didn’t sit still, immediately appearing and bringing him down, only for David to appear again and throwing a fist at him. Right before he was hit, Angelica took them out of the path, causing him to hit a tree and destroying the spot he hit, felling the tree.

Right now he had joined their futile battle, being attacked with Angelica doing her best to save him. It took a good while of them tossing him around that he even lost the concept of time.

“Just stop it! What’s the point! Killing each other isn’t going to do much for anyone.” Zoi had come back from the forest, his shoulder hanging a bit weird and limp with him holding onto it. “Your masters aren’t here so why not find a different purpose.”

His words were loud enough to be heard by these two overpowered beings, looking at him before looking back at each other. He was right, and if they were brought here by some other power than their own, then perhaps it was time to change their ways. After throwing a dirty glance at each other, it seemed like they had cooled down enough, David disappearing to who knows where.

Angelica put Jones down, looking at Zoi and his shoulder. With her glowing eyes, she looked through his skin as she came closer. “Only dislocated, come here.”

Zoi didn’t know her personally but he knew who she was meant to be, letting go of his shoulder and letting her do whatever. He was panting, looking from Jones to the destruction all around. “Please be careful. I only have the one.”

Her eyes lit up, a book with a bunch of medical know-how appeared in front of her, quickly flipping through it before it vanished again. “I know how, relax.” Before he could respond, she already popped it back in with ease, giving him a warm smile.

Jones was still in fight mode, panting as well and looking around. “Where’s David.”

Angelica turned and looked around with her white glowing eyes, eventually stopping on the house. “He’s in his room, I feel his power emanating from there. I think he’s trying to reach out for his master.”

“Will that work?” Asked Zoi, swinging his arm in circles to test it.

“Probably not, our masters have no powers here.” She sounded sad when saying it, knowing that the one that created her wasn’t going to be able to talk to her.

Zoi on the other hand couldn’t help but smile, letting out a sigh of relief as he turned around to look at the partially destroyed forest. “So, I guess you can’t just mess with people, good to know.”

Jones turned away from them, looking at the garage where Madison had to be somewhere. “Perhaps we should try and see if Madison is still alive.”

Right as he was done talking, Angelica already disappeared, most likely to go towards Madison. This left Zoi with Jones, looking at each other as they weren’t so sure what to say to each other.

“So, I have my doubts about all of this. What are your thoughts?” Said Jones, turning back around to face Zoi who at this point still held his shoulder even though he didn’t need to.

“Well, I could pacify them now but David definitely is dangerous.” He started to head back to the house, trying to think of anything good that could come from them working together. “Honestly, nothing good can come of this but there’s nothing we could do.”

In Jones’ dream, he had made people drop towards their death out of necessity. He never saw the end results up close but he knew of one way that their problem could be fixed for all of them. Though with Zoi coming from the same dream and being his biological brother physically, perhaps he should be careful with the mention of murder.

After Madison and Angelica came out of the garage and the guys went back in the house, everyone seemed to take it easy for the rest of the day. People like Angelica and Zoi spend their time relearning about this world with David just sulking in his room, or whatever else he might be trying to achieve in there, Jones didn’t dare to go and see.

Instead, he walked around the house like Madison to look at the damage that had been done. The damage was bad at some spots, but none of the bedrooms were hit as they had been rather far away from the fight.

Having nothing else to do, Jones went back outside, practicing on his own with his clouds, even practicing his flying speed. When getting off, he was soaked yet again. Having nothing better to do, he went back inside to perhaps try and work on some concepts for Angelica to make for him.

After everything, they had a day of good sleep with Jones not really daring to ask anything from Angelica. She seemed very nice but he still didn’t trust her, viewing her the same as David, a conqueror for some strong overlord. While her overlord seemed nice and interested in the survival of man, he didn’t like the idea of people with a lot of control.

Thinking like this started to make another thought in his mind. How much of these thoughts were Jones before the dream and how much came from the dream Jones. At this point, he completely lost the difference, being fully merged with both personalities and thoughts.

Madison had managed to work together with Angelica to restore the house to its former glory, removing all the damage and even refilling the fridge and stuff. This way Madison didn’t need to spend money let alone go out anymore to buy food, which meant more time together with her.

It took a while but Zoi was the first to break out of the cycle of monotony. At dinner when everyone was together, he tapped with his finger on the table, looking at everyone one by one. He didn't grab anyone's attention with this, trying to figure everything out first.

“Alright, time that it had to be said. We were changed in order to spread the word around or at least to cause people to have imagination. How are you planning to do that? Want us to be a circus or something? That doesn't feel so effective does it now?”

Madison had been too busy with her exploration of her new pets and their powers to actually figure out how to do what they were made to do. She stood still, looking at Zoi as if he had insulted her. “I haven't really thought about it.”

Her eyes found their way towards Angelica and David, having the circus idea in her head. “Can you duplicate us?” If they could then there were more of them to spread the word.

Angelica looked up at Madison, surprised that she even asked it after already having figured out that they couldn't manipulate living matter like humans. “No?”

“Damn, well for people with infinite power, you seem to have a lot of limitations.” Said Madison, feeling a bit let down as a great idea had been forming.

“Infinite power?” Angelica seemed to have gotten something in her head as well. “We can't manipulate living matter, but what's to say that I can't open a portal to our previous world and bring my god here?”

David immediately froze, his eyes darting towards Angelica as she realized that she had said it out loud. Before he could say something to her, her eyes lit up as she then froze, muscles tensed as for the first time since they knew her, she seemed to be straining herself to use her powers.

As she continued and her body started to shake, David bared his teeth, getting up from his chair and looking up at the sky. Without saying a word, he flew up through the roof, leaving behind a hole as he looked at the sky. The entire sky became red, giving everyone in the world the first taste of foreign power.

Just as Angelica collapsed onto the ground was when David started to scream. “No you didn't!” The sky started to pulse red right above them, causing David to return to the ground.

He put his hands onto the ground, eyes glowing red as he started to do his own thing, looking the same as when angelica was trying to summon her master.

Nobody in the room had a weapon except the cutlery that they had been using to eat, but everyone knew what would happen if both succeeded in summoning their masters.

“Stop him!” Zoi jumped up, pointing his finger at David, climbing onto the table as it was faster while on the other side, and Jones ran around it, both going for David.

In a second, everyone was pushed against the ground with Zoi on the table, a force field holding them down as David started to sweat and groan, eyes glowing red as his powers flowed through his body like blood.

The force field was too strong to just get rid of, Jones and Zoi struggling to get up while Madison didn't even try for long, letting it happen to her.

After straining himself for longer than Angelica had done, he too fell down, his powers on everyone in the room dissipating. While nobody had a visual confirmation, it was clear that this wasn’t good and a war might start when both would wake up.

Jones stood over them, looking from the two to Madison who slowly got up, seemingly scared. “I'm going to kill them before we become casualties in this stupid war of theirs.” He grabbed a knife from the table, turning to David.

Madison quickly took action, getting towards him to stop him. “No! You're not killing them in my house!”

He wasn't going to let her stop him, turning to her and getting the knife between them. “Get back! You're as insane as these two!”

It seemed to work as Madison quickly took some steps back, holding her hands up. Zoi didn't come closer, not wanting to kill his brother but also not remembering him as one, looking away.

“Good.” With nobody to stop him, he knelt down, lifting the knife up and getting ready to stab. While he had killed people before, it wasn't up close like this. He never saw his victims die and those were people with weapons. He swallowed, arms shaking as he tried his best, but eventually he dropped the weapon. “I… I can't… I can't do…” He gasped for air, crawling away on all fours with his heart racing.

Madison grabbed the knife away, holding it closer to her as her eyes darted to Jones on the ground. “Don’t ever threaten me again!” She looked very mad, waving the knife around before putting it on the table and kneeling, grabbing Angelica first and throwing her over her shoulder. “I’ll bring these two to bed, you two, sleep and Jones… I don’t want to see you again today.”

Jones was still on the ground panting, eyes closed before dropping down prone. He didn’t really say anything to her right now, feeling sad and exhausted even though not much happened, wanting to lie there for a good while.
