Chapter 6: Fireworks

It didn’t rain. What did happen one evening a few days later was far far worse.

“Boys,” said their mum. “Which one of you wrote the word ‘ungulate’ on the bedroom wall?”

Benjamin and Byron pointed at each other.

“Ungulate. I know that word,” said Cassie. “It means hoofed animal. That was in a show we were watching yesterday!” Then she frowned. “Callie, are you still drawing on the walls?”

Callie giggled. “No,” she lied. Then she giggled some more. “Ungulate! Ungulate! Ungulate!” she chanted.

As she marched near the window, her chanting changed. “Firework! Firework! Firework!”

A loud BOOM! echoed through the valley.

“Oh no! The horses!” cried Benjamin. “Casper!”

The entire family ran outside, but it was too late. The firework had scared the horses and all of them had jumped the fence.

“We have to find them!” cried Benjamin.

The whole family started to search. Benjamin searched with his dad, and Byron searched with his mum.

“We’ll help too!” said the girls, and off they went, each one on their own, because they all knew the farm well, especially Carla.

Soon Carla came scampering back. She shouted for the others as she ran. “I’ve found the horses! I’ve found the horses! They’re in the gully, just over the hill. But Casper looks hurt! I think he tripped on a rabbit hole.”

“We have to get help to him,” said Crissie, “But how can we do that? The boys and their parents are looking in the wrong direction! They all went down the hill.”

“I have an idea,” said Cassie, “We can do the same thing I do when I want the TV channel changed.”

The girls started running down the drive after the family.

“But they are so far away,” Carla puffed.

All four girls ran as fast as they could, each one of them wishing they were closer to the family. Then, all of a sudden, they were.

  The girls looked around surprised.

  “Did we teleport?” asked Cassie.

“Maybe it’s a new ghost power,” said Callie.

“Come on,” said Carla. “We have to get them to go back up the hill.”

“Up! Up! Up!” all four of them chanted loudly.

  “Left! Left! Left!”

“Over the hill! Over the hill! Over the hill!”

“Into the gully! Into the gully! Into the gully!”

Soon, they had led the family to the lost horses. All of the horses were okay, except for Casper. Casper was hurt really badly.

Benjamin’s mum called the vet, but the vet did not have good news.

“I’m afraid the horse will have to be put down,” said the vet.
