Three months has passed since entering the academy and Tesla was getting used to studying, resting and visiting his foster father from time to time.
Usually his visits there were accompanied by helping out in the garden and drinking until morning sun struck.
Luka would share his stories from his youth.
Though even Tesla knew that much was left out, be it either from fear or embarrassment, Luka would not share everything.
But Tesla did not mind, for past is supposed to be left alone and if we wish to atone for it, then we must prove it through action.
Those were the ideas that shaped Tesla and in he saw that Luka, while truly not a saint nor a clean person, still tried to help and saved both him Jean.
Of course the truth is much more difficult.
Luka was born in a monastery of the northern Mountain Wall, that itself was a stronghold against beings beyond it.
While it was a monastery, it was more built like a fort complex and that was for a good reason, the monastery was and still is the seat of the Luna's Faithful.
In legends it is said that this monastery is built on the final battle between a dragon and a Luna.
So calling this place important is simply an understatement.
This place is comparable to having a bank full of god's blood, it is so sacred to the point where being there would make you a believer simply from seeing the buildings and roads paved and decorated in silver.
As such Luka became a very firm and unwavering believer in Luna, though in his own twisted way.
He often ignored the hierarchy of the church, more focusing on the effort of others and in the monastery it was quite normal.
Roles were given out on merit and with Luka's psychopathic focus on any topic involving warfare, it made him into a quite literally a maniac only wishing for more effective ways of winning, instead of propagating the belief of his faith.
He soon became one of the officers who faced the northern lands for the protection of the Faithful, at least that is the lie that he once told himself, though now remembering it himself he knows better.
As he protected those that believed in him, they themselves believed in his conviction, knowing that one day he will never return.
For soon his battles turned into an slaughter, marked as nothing more than a belief into a false god.
Though that nature is only known to handful of people and soon their nature will be revealed.
But now Luka carries on, his sins, his cries and his memories hidden with him and with a notebook he gave to a child he calls his own.
Returning once more to an academy he now calls his home Tesla went back to studies and flunking tests after tests, only being able to pass due to open question essays and research.
Although it seems like his skill in science, research and understanding the topics he often times fails to put them on paper for others to understand.
In fact only Norien and Nuville were able to understand his mess.
Mostly due to him being one of the researchers in the lab.
This realization, that came from talking with professors and Luka, made him brush his skills in communication.
Sadly there was no one he could really train this with, except a single interesting person.
For you see the conversation that Norien had with the Director of the Military Academy was to pressure the Research Academy to increase funding.
Oh and increase they did, better microscopes, industrial fans, testing grounds, better lab equipment that would make even an Archmage a run for their money BUT most importantly.
Better quality food, coffee as well as rest rooms, that included all sorts of amenities from beds and sofas to high quality gramaphones and board games.
Trully when academy gives money, then they deliver.
But they also increased security, where one of them was the female officer that Tesla met when waiting for Norien to finish his talk.
And what better way to test his knowledge sharing skills other than him teaching a person who has no interest in it.
Well that was the theory anyway, but there was an issue.
Tesla was not confident when it came to talking to new people, for three days Tesla has been brewing a plan how to talk to a stranger.
It was by far one of his most difficult plans he has done so far.
Because talking to a stranger is always more difficult than creating a machine capable of achieving speeds of 150 km/h.
This was getting so bad that on the fourth day Tesla asked help from Nuville and Norien, this promptly made them scream from laughter and then get sad for Tesla.
Tesla knew that it was kind of funny but what he didn't know is why they got sad, it's not like it was something to get sad over.
After all it is a pretty funny situation when looking at it from an outside point of view.
Yet the two of them got sad over it.
With both of them quickly realizing that their emotion were showing they quickly put them away and helped Tesla with his plan.
By simply asking the officer to help him in return for free time and being able to do absolutely nothing other than listening to Tesla trying to explain basic concepts in a simple way.
With Tesla and the officer going to a study room, both Norien and Nuville went to a break room far away from prying eyes.
Nuville made two cups of coffee one with milk and another with hard liquor, and as usual the dwarves loved to get drunk and Norien got tired of stopping him so he simply doesn't care anymore.
"How long is it going for?" Nuville broke the ice.
"Longer than I know him for." Norien's voice was hurt deep.
Nuville gulped the boiling coffee in one swoop. "What do you think will happen once he realizes?"
This story originates from a different website. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.
"Not much really." Norien sipped on the cup lightly. "Even if he realizes his mind will do everything in it's power to deny himself the ability to remember." putting down the cup Norien looked at his friend. "I do not know what happened with him, in fact I do not know if he even knows whether he is okay there."
"Mayhaps we should sent him to the druids, I know some, though I doubt they would love to hear from me."
"..." Norien felt conflicted but it felt worse to not do anything "I guess it would be worse to not do anything."
"...ssshit can't believe that we got soft."
"We won't change my friend."
"Though you say that, your actions tell otherwise." Nuville's sarcasm was showing "you got clean shaven, you quit drinking and smoking and not to mention." he pointed at the ring that every professor wore "you are a teacher to many students."
"and you did not even try, you are still a smelly old fart who drinks more than he speaks, no wonder the druids hate you."
Nuville laughed "HAHAhahaaa... at least they listen, compared to you."
"hm... that is true." he raised a cup "to our empty cups and our unending failure."
a silent hitting of two porcelain cups was heard.
Tesla and the officer both went into a small room where a blackboard and a table sat.
The two of them introduced themselves.
Officer was the first, her name was Savick tho she refused to give out her surname but either way it was still more than enough for a greeting.
As for Tesla him trying to greet was a disaster, he was never used to meeting new people so greeting her was a painful experience for him but she did not care, since for her it was a way to skip work several times a week and get away with basically being lazy.
Either way with both of them finishing their respective greetings, Tesla started his 'lesson', although calling it that would be giving it too much of a credit.
In short it was a disaster.
Tesla jumped from one topic to another, explaining stuff in ways that made no sense and givining too much info on stuff that was basically unimportant.
But Savick continued to listen, she even wrote down notes or at least tried to.
Sadly due to Tesla's ability to basically make even the most basic concepts into a nothing more than a word spew was extremely impressive.
In fact he was able to say so much, yet provide no context on the topic he is supposed to talk about.
it was one of those moments that makes Tesla, a person who's ability to create technology yet unknown to the world, into a mumbling idiot who doesn't know what two plus two is.
The entire conversation was so confusing that even this book I am writing makes more sense than whatever the hell he was saying.
There was something about engines and fuel, maybe something about heat dissipation or something like that.
In short, it was a failure upon a failure.
Savick had to stop him without being even one hour in.
"Stop." one word made Tesla tremble in fear "You know your stuff, but you can't explain it, you also cannot understand your own knowledge." she looked at her notes "your own understanding is basically, 'it works likes this because that's how it was always was', which is foolish."
Tesla's face fell down, he felt defeated. "I... am sorry"
"Apologizing won't do much." she looked at him "first use the blackboard and write down points you must explain." she started teaching him "second after writing down the points, expand upon them, you must tell me the reason why it works or exists." she sipped some water "tell me why does it exist, what is it used for, how you got to that point, what you did was tell me all the information in a form that was not coherent to me."
Tesla did what she said but another issue came up, information in his notes was also all over the place. "give me a moment, I will find it soon..." Tesla felt stressed.
"sighhhhh... Tesla was it?"
"Y-YES"
"For now let us end this, but do not feel defeated, I will give you one task for tomorrow."
Tesla felt ashamed but nontheless he listened.
"Take the first point, the one you wrote on the blackboard, about the 'creation of light without the usage of light' and write it down in a separate notebook and then present it to me." she stood up and got close to Tesla "Also use more simple terms or at the very least put explanation for the terms you will use, after all I am a soldier not a scientist."
Her voice was stern, her height made her tower above Tesla who even though was a Half-elf was still short and combined with somewhat kind demeanor made him feel weirdly happy and motivated, even though he felt ashamed at his failure.
"I will try my best..."
"I need you to finish it, not make it your best." With these words Sovick went out on her way while Tesla stood still, trying to process his next move.
As Sovick left the lab she was greeted by one of her colleagues, an officer of the same rank as her.
He did not look pleased, in fact he looked pissed off at her.
"Where were you?"
She ignored him and continued on her walk.
"I asked you a question soldier!"
She turned. "My job."
"Your job is to guard the lab, yet you were inside, do you take me for a fool." the officer was pissed.
"My job is not to guard, it is to support the lab." She looked at him with what most would consider a deathly pressure. "And I did exactly what was asked of me, officer."
The officer felt pissed but what else could he do, she was right and he was wrong.
Sovick went through the campus as the night creeped up more and more, at this time campus was mostly silent.
After all not much could be done during the night.
Those who usually stayed during the night were either drunk students or bored students, you can pick but those two were mostly the one's that stayed.
Sovick was the bored one, after all going all the way to the barracks sure took some time, and it was painfully annoying.
One of her favorite pass times would be looking at drunk people doing stupid stuff but none were seen, as such only one thing was left, that was going in silence and be bored.
Her body wasn't exhausted, nor was it in pain.
It was trained to peak human ability, to the point where she could be called a menace.
And often times she simply did not care for others due to the nature of her occupation.
Officers in the military were expected to work by themselves and take on any responsibility of the actions that their unit might do, this in turn made them either very easy to rile up or made them simply not care about detailes.
After all soldiers have their own wills and they should use their brains from time to time but sadly, that was rare.
Perhaps that is why she moved to the Academy, being free from caring about a squad of adults that act like they are four was much more stressful than simply learning about tactics used on a battlefield and history of military equipment.
Though that feeling will always be short lived, for fate always has it's way
