Chapter 32

The sterile scent of antiseptic hung heavy in the air, a stark contrast to the nervous energy crackling in the Imperial City hospital room. Kate and Eric, their faces etched with a mixture of pride and apprehension, waited for Robert as he wrestled with his hospital gown in the bathroom. The sliding door hissed open, admitting a flurry of youthful energy: Freddie, Joel, Emma, Sophia, Leo, and Luis, with an anxious excitement in their eyes.

“Hey! Robert, ready?” Freddie’s voice was a sharp crack in the tense silence.

“Almost,” Kate replied, her voice tight. The bathroom door slid open again, revealing Robert in fresh clothes. His usual easy smile strained. “Alright! Let’s do this.”

A wave of relieved laughter washed over the room. But before they could reach the door, it slid open once more. A nurse, his face a mask of grim determination, filled the doorway, his presence instantly chilling the atmosphere. He stood, an imposing silhouette against the pale hospital light, silently blocking their exit.

Robert’s easy confidence evaporated. “Uh, hi?” he ventured, the question hanging unanswered in the suddenly heavy air. A prickling unease settled over the room. The fluorescent lights flickered, dimming to a sickly yellow. Then, a slow, chilling transformation: the nurse’s eyes blazed with an eerie, inner light.

A voice, deep and resonant, yet strangely gentle, filled the room. “Heroes,” it boomed, “Earth is in danger. You must go… now.”

A collective gasp ripped through the group. “Earth? What’s happening?” Robert’s voice, though laced with concern, held a note of defiance.

“No time,” the nurse replied, his voice a low rumble. His arm extended, hand outstretched, revealing a small orb pulsing with a faint, ethereal glow. “Take this.”

The crystal orb, cool to the touch, seemed to hum with barely contained power. Robert, his face etched with a grim understanding, looked at Kate and Eric.

  “Mom, Dad…”

Eric’s eyes, though pained, held a fierce determination. “We know, son. Go. They need you.” Kate’s hug was a silent torrent of love and fear. “Be careful,” she whispered, her voice choked with emotion.

Robert nodded, a flicker of determination in his eyes. “You guys ready?”

Their silent nods spoke volumes. With a decisive movement, he smashed the orb against the floor. A swirling mist erupted, engulfing them all, then vanished as quickly as it appeared. They were gone.

Silence descended. Only the rhythmic hum of hospital machinery filled the void. Kate stood frozen, her hands clasped tight, staring at the empty space where Robert had been. “There they go,” she whispered, her voice trembling.

Eric’s hand found her shoulder, a steady anchor in the storm of her anxiety. “He’ll be fine,” he reassured her, his voice laced with concern, yet determined. “He’s strong. They all are.”

Kate nodded, but her worry remained palpable. “I just… I can’t help but feel like this is only the beginning.”

The nurse, who had been standing silently, blinked. The eerie glow faded from his eyes. Confusion washed over his face. “Uh, what am I doing here?” he stammered, his voice shaky. “That was… very strange.” He turned and hurried from the room, leaving Kate and Eric alone in the heavy silence.

The team found themselves in an expansive, sun-drenched field, the cool wind whispering secrets through the tall, swaying grass. Above, a bruised, the dark sky pressed down, the distant hum of a colossal city a faint, almost imperceptible drone. Freddie, ever the impatient one, was the first to break the unnerving silence. “Where are we?” he exclaimed, hands planted firmly on his hips, frustration etched onto his face. “They need to start giving us more information” Sophia, arms crossed tightly across her chest, rolled her eyes with theatrical flair. “Agreed. A little context would be profoundly appreciated.”

Robert, ever the pragmatist, stepped forward, his gaze sharp and assessing. “Let’s move,” he said, his voice firm, commanding. “We’ll figure this out as we go.”

“But go where?” Joel queried, his gaze sweeping the empty expanse. As if in answer, a sudden, powerful gust of wind sliced through the field, bending the tall grass into a clearly defined path, a verdant arrow pointing towards an unseen destination.

Luis raised a skeptical eyebrow, a hint of wonder in his eyes. “I think that might be our… guide,” he murmured, gesturing towards the wind-sculpted trail.

The team, propelled by a mixture of curiosity and unease, began to walk, the path of bent grass leading them inexorably towards the city’s edge. As they drew closer, the familiar skyline of London loomed into view–a breathtaking panorama of soaring skyscrapers, historic landmarks bathed in the muted light, and the palpable energy of a bustling metropolis thrumming with life.

“Wait… London?” Joel breathed, his voice laced with disbelief. “Why are we here?”

Robert’s expression hardened, the pieces of the puzzle clicking into place in his mind. His voice, low and grave, cut through the stunned silence. “We need to find Mason. He’ll know what’s going on.”

Freddie, running a hand through his already disheveled hair, frowned deeply. “But how in the world are we supposed to find him? It’s not as if he will magically appear.”

As if summoned by their very thoughts, a voice, calm and unexpected, cut through the air from behind them. “I can take you to him.”

The team whirled around, their hearts leaping into their throats, to find Longwei standing there, hands clasped behind his back, a faint, almost unsettlingly serene smile playing on his lips.

A collective “AH!” erupted from the team, a mixture of startled yells and frustrated groans. Longwei chuckled softly, his composure utterly unshaken by their near-panic.

“You really need to stop doing that,” Luis said, a hand clutching at his chest, his voice breathless. “You’re going to give someone a heart attack one day.”

“My sincerest apologies,” Longwei replied, his tone polite, yet laced with an undercurrent of amusement. “Shall we proceed?”

Robert nodded curtly, his expression grimly determined. “Lead the way.”

Longwei extended his arms, his expression calm, almost ethereal. “Everyone, please grasp my arms firmly.”

Hesitantly, the team complied, their fingers wrapping around Longwei’s arms. In the blink of an eye, the world dissolved into a swirling vortex of color and motion, the sensation of teleportation sending a wave of nausea through them.

When their vision cleared, they found themselves standing in the heart of the G.A.R.D. base, the sleek, high-tech surroundings a stark contrast to the windswept field they’d so recently occupied. Their sudden and dramatic arrival caused several agents to jump, startled cries echoing through the room. “AH!” screamed one agent, clutching at their chest. “He needs to stop doing that!” Another agent groaned, shaking their head wearily.

If you discover this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.

“Tell me about it,” Luis muttered, a dry chuckle escaping his lips.

Longwei stepped back, his hands clasped behind his back once more. “I’ll leave you to it,” he said, his tone calm. “Mason at his office.”

Robert nodded, his expression serious. “Thanks, Longwei. We’ll take it from here.”

As Longwei disappeared in another blur of motion, the team exchanged glances. “And there he goes again,” Freddie said, shaking his head.

“Come on,” Robert said, his voice firm. “Let’s talk to Mason”

The team walked through the sleek, metallic hallways of the G.A.R.D. base, their footsteps echoing in the otherwise quiet space. They reached Mason’s office, the glass door sliding open with a soft whoosh. Inside, Mason was seated at his desk, deep in conversation with Darian. Both looked up in surprise as the team entered.

“What are you doing here?” Mason asked, his brow furrowed in confusion.

Darian, however, lit up at the sight of Robert and the others. He quickly stood and crossed the room, pulling Robert and Freddie into a hug. “Hey, Darian,” Robert said, a small smile breaking through his serious expression. “How are you doing?”

“I’m doing fine,” Darian said, his tone warm. “How about you? How’s the Guardians thing going?”

Freddie, never one to miss an opportunity to talk, started rambling. “It’s going pretty well! We got suits, and we’ve been fighting all kinds of—”

Robert cut him off, his tone firm but not unkind. “We can catch up later. Right now, we need to speak with you, Mason.”

Mason leaned forward, his expression shifting to one of concern. “What happened?”

Robert took a deep breath, his voice steady but urgent. “We were sent here because Earth is in danger.”

Mason’s confusion deepened. “Danger from what?”

“We don’t actually know,” Robert admitted. “They didn’t give us much information.”

Mason raised an eyebrow. “Who is ‘they’? You need to be more specific.”

Robert hesitated, knowing how strange his explanation would sound. “I was at the hospital, and a nurse came in. His eyes started glowing, and he told us to come here because Earth was in danger.”

Mason leaned back in his chair, his fingers steepled as he tried to make sense of Robert’s words. “I can’t just act on this,” he said finally. “I’m going to need more to go on.”

As if on cue, a loud alarm blared through the base, the red emergency lighting bathing the room in an eerie glow. Mason shot to his feet, his expression turning grim. “What now?” he muttered, already moving toward the door.

The team followed him out of the office, their footsteps quickening as they made their way to the command center. The hallways were filled with the sound of the alarm and the hurried movements of agents rushing to their stations.

When they reached the command center, the room was a flurry of activity. Holographic screens filled the air, displaying maps, data streams, and live footage. Agents were shouting over the noise, their voices tense as they tried to make sense of the situation.

“You believe me now?” said Robert

Mason stepped up to the central console, his voice cutting through the chaos. “Report! What’s going on?”

One of the agents turned to him, their face pale. “We’ve got multiple reports in Central London. Unknown hostiles—heavily armed and extremely dangerous. They’re causing widespread destruction.”

The holographic screens in the command center flickered with chaos—buildings engulfed in flames, streets littered with debris, and panicked civilians running in every direction. The Void Reapers wrecking havoc. Mason’s jaw tightened as he leaned over the console, his knuckles white as he gripped the edge.

Robert stepped forward, his eyes locked on the screens. “It’s them. They’re here.”

Mason turned sharply, his voice cutting through the noise. “Use your words. Who are they?”

Joel stepped in, his voice tight. “They attacked us back on our base. But how did they get here?”

“Attacked you?” asked Darian, confused. “I think I missed a couple of chapters.”

Mason’s eyes narrowed. “They’re from your world?”

Robert nodded, his expression grim. “Yes.”

Mason didn’t hesitate. He slammed his hand on the console, his voice booming through the room. “Initiate Invasion Protocol now!”

The intercom crackled to life, a calm but urgent voice echoing through the base. “Invasion Protocol active. All agents report to your stations. This is not a drill.”

Agents scrambled, grabbing gear and rushing toward the exits. The command center buzzed with shouted orders and the clatter of equipment. Mason turned to the nearest agent, his tone sharp. “Evacuate the civilians. Contain the threat. Move!”

Robert turned to his team, his voice low but steady. “We have to end this.”

Emma crossed her arms, her brow furrowed. “We barely escaped last time. They’re dangerous.”

Robert’s eyes hardened. “I’m not standing here while they hurt innocent people. This is what we signed up for. This is why we’re together.”

He extended his arm, his hand open in the center of the group. “Are you with me?”

Freddie was the first to move, slapping his hand on top of Robert’s with a grin. “You know you can always count on me.”

Leo and Luis exchanged a glance before joining in, their hands stacking on top. “I’m in,” Leo said, his smirk barely hiding his nerves. “Let’s show them how it’s done,” Luis added.

Sophia stepped forward, her hand resting on the pile. Her voice was calm but firm. “Some payback wouldn’t hurt.”

Joel hesitated for a moment before placing his hand on top. “Let’s give them a fight they’ll remember.”

All eyes turned to Emma. She stood still, her arms crossed, her gaze flickering between the team and the chaos on the screens. Finally, she stepped forward, her hand joining the others.

The team smiled, their bond palpable in the moment. But the sound of Mason clearing his throat shattered the quiet.

“Excuse me,” he said, his voice dry. “The city’s under attack. How about you get moving?”

Freddie groaned, rolling his eyes. “Geez, way to ruin the mood.”

Robert nodded, his expression serious. “He’s right. Let’s move.”

“Wait,” Luis said, raising a hand. “What about our suits?”

Emma stepped forward, pulling a small bag from her side. She reached inside and pulled out seven silver coins, each no larger than a thumbnail. She held them out, her voice calm. “Place them on your chest and say suit.”

Robert took one, turning it over in his hand. The metal was cool, its surface etched with faint, glowing lines. He pressed it to his chest. “Suit.”

The coin shimmered, dissolving into a cascade of light. The light spread across his body, forming sleek black-and-blue armor. The suit materialized in seconds, its high-tech design gleaming under the command center lights.

The others stared, their eyes wide.

“Wow, that is wicked,” said Darian

Joel blinked. “When did you do this?”

Emma shrugged, a small smile tugging at her lips. “It’s always been a feature. You didn’t know?”

“No!” Joel said, his voice rising. “Why didn’t you tell us?”

“You never asked,” Emma replied, her tone matter-of-fact.

The team quickly followed, pressing the coins to their chests and summoning their suits. The room filled with the hum of energy and the sound of materializing armor. Leo smirked as his suit formed around him. “A suit that comes out of a coin by saying a special word? Sounds oddly familiar.”

Emma nodded. “Universe 1618 has a similar system. I copied it.”

“Here,” Darian said as he handed them each one an earpiece, “With this, I will be able to communicate with you from here“

“Thanks,” said Robert. He stepped forward, his suit fully activated. He raised his hand, and a portal swirled to life, revealing the chaotic streets of London. The team exchanged glances, their expressions a mix of determination and resolve.

From the shadows of the command center’s upper walkway, Longwei observed them. The base hummed around them: holographic screens flickered with damage reports, officers barked orders into comms, and somewhere, an alarm blared a steady, pulsing warning.

Now, he thought. Before they notice.

He raised his hands, the folded parchment from the hooded man now glowing faintly between his fingers. The spell’s Latin incantation slithered into the air, each syllable weighted with borrowed power.

“Per sanguinem transitus, per temporis filum,

Hanc munimen do vobis—non aeternum, sed fragile donum.

  Vires alienae vestras tangant,

Dum lux haec durat, non vincimini.”

(“By the blood of passage, by the thread of time,

This fortification I give you—not eternal, but a fragile boon.

Let foreign strength grace your hands,

While this light lasts, you shall not fall.”)

The parchment disintegrated into embers. A pulse of gold-tinged energy rippled outward, unseen by all but Longwei—a fleeting current that wrapped around the group like a second skin. Their postures straightened almost imperceptibly; their eyes sharpened. They wouldn’t feel the spell’s grip, not yet. But when the battle starts, they would strike faster. For a little while.

Longwei exhaled, flexing his stinging fingers. A temporary crutch, he mused, watching Robert and the others step through a portal before Robert opened, ready to face the Reapers and protect the city.
