CHAPTER 3: (GLACE) Racing Lights…

I ride my Hover-tech board around another factory in the city, not the same one as before. I am training, we’ve entered the race, but I have more to learn. Dimzel enters the factory and whistles, stopping me. I come to a stop by him, falling off my board and slamming straight on my face. “Are you okay?” He asks, helping me up. “Yeah, just… still not perfect, I wish we had more time.” I say, rubbing my arms. “You’re covered in bruises…” Dimzel says, inspecting my wounds. “Just a few cuts n’ stuff, I’m fine, nothing’s perfect-” I say, chuckling, but Dimzel cuts me off. “Stop… just stop…” Dimzel says, grabbing medical supplies from his bag. “Are you... Okay?” I ask, tilting my head. Dimzel sighs as he bandages my wounds. “No… not really…” Dimzel says, his monitor seeming dim. “Why-?” I ask, but Dimzel cuts me off. “When were you planning to tell me you’re my niece - no… HIS great grandchild?” Dimzel asks, coldly. “I was trying to find the words… It isn’t something I’m really privy to myself… I only found out about it when the doctor mentioned my resemblance to Gwen… I pieced it together after that, I never knew my great grandpa, and my great grandma, Gwen, I guess, went by a different name, all I know is that my mom always said after Great Grandma's first husband died, she remarried, and eventually had my grandmother... so I don't think we really are related....” I say, sadly. “Oh..." Dimzel says, rubbing his arm. He then perks up, remembering something. "When did the doctor say that?” Dimzel asks, finishing up the bandages. “Some point after you ran off, when I was getting on my board… Then I chased after you…” I explain, rubbing my nose. There's a brief silence between us before I speak up. “What was it you were about to call me?” I ask, tilting my head. “What do you mean?” Dimzel asks. “You nearly called me your niece.” I say, sternly. “GREAT niece…” Dimzel says, sighing. “When DL was creating me… he referred to me as his ‘son’ and Delilah’s ‘brother’ many times, and Delilah referred to me as her brother too… hell she started it… which would make YOU my great niece… but I don’t deserve a familial connection to DL and Gwen after what I did…” Dimzel explains, rubbing his arm. “HEY! What did we talk about? YOU didn’t kill him, THEY are hiding something, I just KNOW it.” I say, sternly. “I pray you’re right…” Dimzel says, his audio glitching and his head twitching, his voice distorting like he’s speaking through a low quality radio. “I AM right, I KNOW it…” I say, proudly, smiling at Dimzel, which seems to cheer him up a bit. “What’s our plan?” I ask, smiling brightly. “Well… we need to survive this race, first of all, it’s not exactly a safe one, but we need to make sure not to paint targets on our backs too, stay out of making any enemies beyond the ones we already have.” Dimzel says, checking his notes. “You made notes?” I ask, noticing the digital glasses that appear on his monitor. “Yup.” Dimzel says, chuckling. “And you can change your monitor?” I ask, confused. “Yup! I can make it ANYthing, watch!” Dimzel says, his monitor changing into random shapes, bouncing around and swaying across his monitor, soon becoming a laser sword battle. Then there’s a giant digital explosion on his monitor, and his eyes return. “See?” Dimzel asks, chuckling. “That’s… interesting…” I say, narrowing my eyes and inspecting his face. “Let’s stay on topic, the point of this race is to weed out the weaker racers, leaving only the strongest, and knowing PrimeCorp, since they own the race, they’ll have Delilah racing, with all the intent of having her win…” Dimzel says. “So our goal is to have one or both of us still in the race against Delilah, since she will definitely be making it to the finals.” I say, nodding. “Exactly, let’s aim for that, and try to make as few enemies as possible.” Dimzel says, nodding. Then the radios in the city screech and fuzz with static. “All racers of the Grand Grav Prix please make your way to Prime City’s track near the center of the city, the race will begin in 10 minutes.” The speaker says over the radio. “That’s our call.” Dimzel says, calmly. “How are we going to make it to the city’s center in 10 MINUTES!?” I say, starting to get nervous. “Don’t worry, I’ve got us covered.” Dimzel says, grabbing my board and snapping his fingers. A portal opens and he shoves me through it, following after me. We pop out the other side, standing at the starting line. Dimzel hands me my board and gives me a thumbs up. I look around and see a few people, a man with a bushy mustache wearing a sparkly outfit, a person wearing a full set of black and red knight armor, Delilah, a person wearing strange tech-armor, and a woman with long black and green spiky hair. The woman with spiky hair notices Dimzel and I and run over, her sharp teeth revealed as she smiles brightly. “HI!” She says, running up to Dimzel. Dimzel has put his helmet on at this point, so his voice is distorted, deep, and static-filled. “Ummm… Hi.” Dimzel says, looking around. “I’m a HUUUUGGGEEEE fan.” She says, shaking his hand. A strange green ooze drips from her hands and she pulls her hand away shaking off the ooze, chuckling nervously. “Sorry, name’s Toxis, and as my name implies, my sweat and drool is toxic and acidic.” The woman chuckles, still smiling brightly. I see the person in the tech armor staring at me, their chest having a giant black X on it. They turn to face Delilah and so do I, it’s like they want me to keep an eye on her. “That’s Drifter-X, all that people know about him is that he’s a guy, and he’s a common adversary of Delilah.” Toxis says, walking over to me. “Does he ever talk?” Dimzel asks, bending over to be at the same level as Toxis and I. “Nope, not a word.” Toxis says, narrowing her eyes at him. “But I’m sure The Great Dimzel can beat him down.” Toxis says, smiling brightly at Dimzel. “Why do you call me that?” Dimzel asks, confused. “Because you’re made by the Great DimensionLord, right? To be his replacement? HIS title is YOUR title-” Toxis explains but Dimzel’s head twitches and his monitor glitches. “I am NOT worthy of that title…” Dimzel says, sternly, his digital eyes narrowed. Toxis leans back, nervously… until she smiles. “RIGHT! Because YOU are FAR better than DL, HAHA! I’m a moron, how aboooouuutttt…. THE LEGENDARY DIMZEL!” Toxis says, holding her hands up. “More like the murderous Dimzel.” A voice says as we turn to see Delilah standing there. “I mean, he killed my father, after all…” Delilah says, coldly. This infuriates me, but before I can tell her off, Toxis speaks up. “LIAR! DIMZEL WOULD NEVER! He’s no KILLER! I don’t know what happened to YOU through these years, but you must have SOME damage to actually BELIEVE that PrimeCorp propaganda, besides, aren’t you HEAVILY against PrimeCorp?” Toxis says, getting annoyed. Delilah grumbles and walks off, annoyed. “What’s HER damage?” Toxis asks, annoyed, crossing her arms. “I have no fuckin’ clue.” I grumble, tightening my grip on my board. Dimzel sighs and straightens up. “Let’s just get this done.” Dimzel says, sternly. The announcer begins speaking up. “ALLLLRRRIGGHHHHTTTYYY FOLKS!” The announcer shouts. “THE RACE IS STARTING UP! LET’S GET THIS STARTED! EVERYONE GET READY FOR A RUNNING START!” The announcer says, and I notice as everyone begins backing up. Shit, I never practiced running starts. “THREE!” The announcer shouts and I step back, my hands shaking. “TWO!” The announcer continues. I notice everyone not running, so I begin running forward to get a lead start. “ONE…” The announcer shouts and everyone begins running behind me. I then slam right into the electric starting line and get stunned. “GO!!!” The announcer shouts as I fall to the ground and everyone runs and jumps on their boards, and I lie there, steam coming off me. Toxis stops running and helps me up. “First time?” She asks, tossing my board down for me to get on. “It’s that obvious?” I ask, chuckling. “Yup, Let’s go, girly!” Toxis says, shoving me to give me a good start while she runs and hops on her board. We ride and attempt to catch up to the rest of the racers. Then I notice something… “ARE WE RACING ON AN ACTIVE ROAD!?” I shout, swerving between and around cars. “YUP! WELCOME TO THE GRAV PRIX!” Toxis shouts, using her acid to clear out small parts of debris in our way. “HERE!” Toxis says, riding in front of me. “LET ME GIVE YOU A BOOST!” Toxis shouts, activating her boost, launching her forward. I brace for impact, thinking I’m going to get launched away, but instead I realize I’m catching up to her. “What’s going on?” I ask, looking around. “HOVER-TECH USES A SPECIAL KIND OF AIR TO RIDE! NOT STORING IT, BUT USING THE AIR AROUND THEM, SO WHEN YOU BOOST IT CREATES A SLIPSTREAM!” Toxis shouts over the wind. “AND YOU’RE RIDING IT!” Toxis laughs as she swerves between cars, and my board follows automatically. Toxis then lets me ride past her. “GO, I’LL CATCH UP!” Toxis shouts as I ride at high speeds toward the rest of the racers. I notice a ledge I can ride up, so I turn into it and launch into the air, doing a spin in the air. I then land on rails above it and my board launches forward, like a small burst of speed caused by the air tricks. I grind on the rails, and eventually drop down into a crowd of the rest of the racers. “BOUT TIME YOU CAUGHT UP!” Dimzel laughs. We continue riding, clashing against other racers. Then the person in the black and red armor clashes against me. “THE ABYSMAL KNIGHT WILL CRUSH YOU!” The person’s voice shouts, pushing against me. I keep pushing, trying to stay on my board, when I hear something. I turn back and see a laser crossbow bolt flying toward me, Delilah has aimed right for my head. Just before the bolt hits me, Drifter-X rides in and blocks the bolt with his armored arm. “Great, YOU again…” Delilah grumbles, but Drifter-X just… stares, coldly. Dimzel then uses DimRail-Zeta to divide me and Abysmal Knight. We ride forward, approaching a tight turn. Dimzel manages to drift successfully, but I miss the pedal, so Dimzel reaches for my arm, but misses. Then Drifter-X grabs my arm, launching me forward, around the corner. Delilah then continues to target Drifter-X. “I’VE GOT YOU NOW!” The man in the sparkly outfit and with the bushy mustache shouts, raising a laser sword. She swings it down at us but Dimzel blocks it with DimRail-Zeta, saving us just in time. “Something about you looks familiar.” Dimzel says, staring at the guy. “I AM MUSTACHE MASTER! A DESCENDANT OF MUSTACHE MAN!” The man in the sparkly outfit says. “Y’know what… That makes more sense than it should…” Dimzel says, when suddenly Mustache Master’s mustache shuffles and extends, grabbing Dimzel’s board from under him. “OH NO, FOLKS! MUSTACHE MASTER’S STACHE HAS GOTTEN DL-1’S BOARD!!!” The announcer shouts as the crowd around the city cheers. Then Dimzel then forms his Hover-Tech boots. “LOOK AT THAT, FOLKS! DL-1 IS PREPARED FOR EVERY OUTCOME, HE’S GOT BUILT IN HOVER-TECH BOOTS!!!!” The announcer shouts, cheering loudly along with the crowd. Mustache Master’s Stache throws Dimzel’s board to the side as Dimzel uses his boots backwards, moving backwards as he defends himself. “Sorry, I’ll pay you back for the board, it looked expensive…” Mustache Master says, nervously. “Don’t worry about it, it’s like a boomerang.” Dimzel chuckles. “How so?” Mustache Master asks, tilting his head. Dimzel extends his other arm, revealing he doesn’t need both hands to hold back Mustache Master’s sword. “It always comes back.” Dimzel chuckles, smirking as his palm glows. Then Dimzel’s board comes flying back, hitting Mustache Master’s head and knocking him off his board. Dimzel’s board returns to his hands as Mustache Master falls to the ground. Dimzel puts his sword and hover-board onto his back as he turns around and continues using the boots. “Nice work.” I say, smiling. “That’s just how I play… Nope… that doesn’t… sound cool…” Dimzel says, trying to act cool, and failing. “Wait a moment, Mustache Master’s stache is a power, We can use powers…” Dimzel realizes. “Let’s try THIS ON FOR SIZE!” Dimzel shouts, raising his hands upward as green and yellow mist surrounds the ground behind us. The road begins to shift and change, becoming a rocky, pillar covered bio-mine field. “LOOK AT THIS, FOLKS!!! DL-1 HAS TERA-FORMED THE TRACK TO HIS LIKING! BUT HOW WILL HE HANDLE GOING BACK THROUGH IT ON THE NEXT TWO LAPS!?” The announcer shouts, smugly. “Right… we WILL have to deal with that next go around…” Dimzel says, snapping his fingers and making the formation repair itself. But the damage is done, and has knocked every racer, Delilah and Drifter-X included, off their boards, slowing them down long enough for us to get through the tunnel. The tunnel is a tube, allowing us to ride on the walls and ceiling of it. “DIMZEL!!!” A voice shouts as we turn around to see Delilah approaching us rapidly. She launches past us with a powerful boost, knocking me off my board, and him off his feet. “Delilah…” Dimzel says, getting back up quickly and getting back on his board, his Hover-Tech boots retracting into his legs, riding her slipstream. “WAIT!” I shout as I get back on my board and follow behind him. We come out of the tunnel and launch through the starting line, starting the second lap. Dimzel is doing flips by using the slipstream to launch him upward, landing back in the slipstream, and boost forward. I decide to copy his movements in order to keep up. “DELILAH! WAIT UP!” Dimzel shouts, launching out of the slipstream and riding side by side with Delilah. “LEAVE ME ALONE!” Delilah shouts, firing crossbow bolts at Dimzel, but Dimzel blocks with DimRail-Zeta. “I WON’T JUST LET YOU RIDE AWAY! Just TELL me what happened so I can TRULY understand WHY I killed DL!” Dimzel says and Delilah seems almost confused. “YOU… HE… I… I DON’T KNOW!” Delilah shouts. “YOU KILLED HIM! THAT’S ALL THAT MATTERS TO ME!” Delilah shouts, slamming her board into Dimzel while I try to keep up. “WE BOTH KNOW THAT’S NOT HOW YOU ARE!” Dimzel pleads, pushing against her. “I… I…” Delilah says, sounding almost unsure, something’s messing with her, like she can’t believe her own mind. “SHUT UP!!!” Delilah roars, pushing more and more. “PLEASE, DELILAH!” Dimzel pleads. “YOU AREN’T MY FAMILY! YOU AREN’T MY BROTHER! YOU DO NOT KNOW ME!” Delilah shouts, pushing Dimzel to the side, knocking him off the bridge. Delilah’s eyes widen in a sense of regret, something that seems to confuse even her. “DIMZEL!” I shout, drifting over and leaning over the edge and grabbing his wrist. I manage to pull him back up but at the cost of our place in the race. Dimzel climbs back up, with my help, and I pant heavily. “Delilah…” Dimzel grumbles. “GREAT! NOW we’re in last PLACE!” I shout, as we get back on our boards. “NO YOU’RE NOT!” A voice shouts from behind us. Suddenly hands slam into our backs at high speeds. “I AM!!!” Toxis shouts as she uses her immense speed to launch us forward. “TOXIS!” I shout as she falls off her board and rolls against the ground. When she gets up she gives us a thumbs up and shouts to us to just ride. “I MAY HAVE SOME ENERGY LEST IN MY SYSTEMS FOR ANOTHER PORTAL!” Dimzel shouts as we speed through the course. “THEN WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR!?” I shout, laughing. Dimzel harnesses his energy and opens a portal, allowing us to launch through it. A portal rips open and launches us out in front of the rest of the racers. “HOW DID THEY CATCH UP!?” Abysmal Knight shouts. “BECAUSE THEY CAN OPEN PORTALS!” Mustache Master shouts. “WOULD YOU ALL JUST SHUT UP!?” Delilah shouts before Drifter-X suddenly swings a punch at Delilah, knocking her off course. Drifter-X’s scarf is grabbed by Delilah and she tightens it around his neck. “WHY WON’T YOU LEAVE ME ALONE!?” Delilah shouts, furiously, pulling back and stopping them both. Delilah steps off her board and lets everyone pass her while she holds Drifter-X back. “GO ON AHEAD, WIN THIS!” I shout to Dimzel as I turn around and swerve past the other racers, and boost directly toward Delilah. I push my board to the side and drop kick her to the ground. Drifter-X watches my board fly off the track and explode, so he grabs my wrist before I hit the ground and boosts off, riding off with me. “WHAT ARE YOU-!?” I shout, confused. He doesn’t speak, he just rides off with me, eventually reaching the line again, reaching the second lap. He holds me on the board and points toward the other racers, then it clicks. It’s a Symbiotic relationship, he helps me reach the end and stay in the race, and I keep his armor un-touched. He then hands me a laser rifle and I chuckle. “With pleasure…” I say, aiming the rifle toward one of the racers, Abysmal Knight. I pull the trigger and an electric bolt hits him straight in the chest, stunning him and making him fall off his board. Soon Delilah returns from the back and she fires a crossbow bolt that destroys the rifle. “Dammit…” I grumble as Drifter-X arrives next to Dimzel. “I see you made a new friend.” Dimzel says, his helmet’s narrow bar visor glowing brightly. Dimzel looks at Drifter-X’s armor and chuckles. “I Like your helmet.” Dimzel says. Drifter-X gives him a thumbs up, just as Delilah wedges between them. “WELL WELL WELL, THE THREE PEOPLE I HATE MOST ALL TOGETHER! WHAT IS IT, MY BIRTHDAY!?” Delilah shouts, furiously, as she loads a strange cylinder into her crossbow and suddenly a powerful laser shoots from it. She fires it at all of us, trying to take us out, but I ducked, and Drifter-X’s and Dimzel’s helmets are laser reflective. Delilah stares at us and sighs, rubbing her eyes. “I spent so many chips on that…” Delilah grumbles. Drifter-X and Dimzel slam into her, making her fall off her board as we cross the finish line for the final time. Delilah was just barely able to make it, rolling against the ground and crossing the line. “AND THAT’S THAT, EVERYONE!!!” The announcer shouts as Toxis, Abysmal Knight, and Mustache Master cross the line. “THE STARTING MATCH IS FINISHED! I HOPE EVERYONE’S READY FOR THE REAL RACE TOMORROW!!” The announcer shouts. “Now get the fuck outta here, the top 4 will get their chips in their accounts in a few hours.” The announcer says. “Top four?” I ask, confused. “We both knew Delilah would be favored.” Dimzel says, shrugging. “Welp it’s good to know I’m still in the race.” Toxis says, giggling to herself, wiping drool off her mouth. Delilah stands up and dusts herself off, grumbling to herself. “Delilah…” A deep, distorted voice says as I turn to see Drifter-X. Delilah stares at him too, her eyes shrunken and shaking. “That’s all you have to say?” Delilah asks, coldly. Delilah’s face turns to a frown, with her sharp teeth. “Don’t act like you care now, X… some soulmate you were…” Delilah says, coldly, walking away with her board. “Soulmate?” Dimzel asks, removing his helmet and turning to face Drifter-X. Drifter-X simply stares down with an almost sad demeanor, before walking away. I stand upright and sigh. “You did good.” Toxis says, patting my back. “Yeah but it’s clear that no matter what, Delilah will win this thing.” I say, grumbling. “We’ve got to win this…” I add. “Hm, you seem hangry, how about we get some food, my treat.” Toxis says, grabbing her wallet. Dimzel walks over to us and I chuckle, nodding. The three of us walk to a nearby burger place, sitting down at a booth and ordering some food. “What can I get for you two?” The waitress asks, ignoring Dimzel. “I’ll have a Coe-luh and a double cheese burger with bacon and pickles.” Toxis says. “I’ll just have a plain burger.” I say, smiling. “Seriously?” Toxis asks. “What?” I ask, confused. “Only a PLAIN?” Toxis asks. “I don’t want you to waste too much money on me.” I say, nervously, my stomach growling. “Your stomach disagrees, I don’t care about how much I spend here, Get something you’ll actually ENJOY, Glace.” Toxis says, sternly. “Fine, I’ll have a sprint soda and a double cheese burger with lettuce and bacon.” I say, sighing. The waitress nods and walks off. “Nothing for me? What does a robot gotta do to get a soda around here?” Dimzel asks. “Can you even drink soda?” Toxis asks, wipping the toxic drool off her mouth. “Yup! My creator didn’t finish my food processor, but I can drink, look.” Dimzel says, pointing at his face as his face panel lifts open, revealing a small straw-shaped hole, about the size of my index finger. The face panel lowers again and Dimzel leans against the table, his eyes looking smug. Toxis chuckles a bit, soon sighing. There’s a bit of silence before she looks over at me. “I.. umm… you didn’t actually JUST want a plain burger, right? Like… I wasn’t forcing you to add stuff you didn’t want?” Toxis asks, nervously. “Hm? OH! No it’s fine, I just added what sounded good.” Glace says. “Have you never had a burger before?” Toxis asks. “No… I grew up pretty damn poor... My Great grandma lost a lot through the years, soon remarrying someone else who she had a kid with who became my grandma, my Grandma had my mom, and by then our family had lost everything… Mom died in a raid from the PrimeCorp due to them being paid off to kill her because someone was pissed off at her for whatever reason…” I explain. “I was only 15…” I explain, my face softening. “I’ve been on my own ever since…” I say, tears in my eyes. “That's why I despise PrimeCorp… they took everything from me… now I want to take everything from them….” I explain, my fist clenching. “Damn… I… I never knew…” Toxis says. The waitress returns with our stuff, handing us our sodas and burgers. “Can I-” Dimzel says, but the waitress walks off. “Man…. talk about robot hatred…” Dimzel says as I sip from my soda, it’s awful. “Tell me about it…” A robot says in the booth behind me and Dimzel, leaning back to look at us. He’s then hit on the head and he turns around. “Want my soda? It's a sprint.” I say, offering it to him. Dimzel tilts his head, his eyes shutting in a happy way as he takes the cup, opens his face up, and sips from it. Dimzel closes his face and hums softly. “Strange…” Dimzel says. “What is?” I ask. “It tastes like a soda from when I was first made…” Dimzel says, shrugging. I bite into my burger and taste it, tears in my eyes. “It’s… good…” I say. “WOAH! Are you okay?” Toxis asks, noticing I’m crying. “Yeah it’s just… I’ve… I’ve only really eaten crappy protein bars, or just starved…” I say, wiping the tears away. “Heh, never knew a burger would make someone cry.” Toxis chuckles. Dimzel continues to drink his soda. “So… what do you do for a living Toxis?” Dimzel asks, lowering and shutting his face. “OH! I worked an office job, but… unsurprisingly… acidic drool and sweat isn’t really compatible with paper and office supplies…” Toxis chuckles, soon sighing nervously. “I got fired last week, figured this race was a chance to earn some money but… I guess that won’t really work out too well…” Toxis says, looking away sheepishly. “I just wanna have a stable source of income… but my dumbass can’t hold a job because my dad decided to have a kid with a damn alien…” Toxis grumbles, her eyes narrowing furiously. Toxis sighs, her face dropping emotionally and she looks at me. “I’m sorry about acting like this, it just frustrates me, I don’t WANT these powers, I just want to be NORMAL, now whenever I’m hungry I destroy public infrastructure.” Toxis grumbles. “Having powers can be stressful, I understand that well.” Dimzel says, sighing. We eat our food and eventually we all head out. “Bye, Glace, you better train for our next race!” Toxis says, chuckling and waving bye. Dimzel and I head home as I check my phone. I see that about 10,000 chips were added to my account. I nearly choke on my spit as I see it. “WHAT THE-!?” I shout. Dimzel looks at my phone and checks his account, finding 20,000 in his. “Hm… seems it changes depending on placement in that race, I guess if I got 20,00… and YOU got 10,000… that means Drifter-X got 15,000, and Delilah got 5,000…” Dimzel says, explaining. “I’m sorry you didn’t get as much as Drifter and I-” Dimzel says, calmly, but I cut him off, shaking him. “I DON’T CARE! I HAVE ACTUAL CHIPS IN MY ACCOUNT! I HAVE MONEY!” I laugh, jumping around as it begins to rain. “I ACTUALLY HAVE MONEY!” I laugh, letting go of Dimzel and spinning around. Dimzel sees me spin and laugh happily and he begins to chuckle, his eyes on his monitor squinting joyfully. He begins to laugh and spin around with me in the rain, jumping in puddles. We laugh and laugh and soon slip and fall on the ground. We lay there for a moment before Dimzel starts laughing again, and I join him. We both sigh and I smile. “You’re a great friend, Glace…” Dimzel says, smiling even without a mouth. “I’ve never really had a friend before…” I sigh, smiling brightly. “Well you have me now.” Dimzel says, standing up and offering his hand to help me up. I take his hand and he helps me up to my feet. “Now let’s head home, we have to get up early for practice tomorrow.” Dimzel says, walking back to my hideout. I stare at him as he walks away, I feel warm. Despite the cold rain… I’m… happy. I walk back over to him and we head back home.
