Chapter 14 – Vhal’Korath Maw of the Aether

  The creature did not roar.

That was the first thing Kainen noticed.

Every monster they had fought before announced itself—snarls, screeches, territorial bellows. Even the goblins made enough noise to echo through stone corridors. Vhal'Korath simply looked at them, and the pressure in the chamber deepened like a hand closing around their throats.

Metallic veins woven through the arena floor pulsed violently, blue light racing like blood through arteries. Every pilr shuddered as though struggling to remain upright. The air thickened until it pressed against Kainen's skin, a low vibration humming in his teeth.

"Everyone," he said quietly, "spread out."

Rori didn't ask why. Her bdes slid free as she stepped sideways across the stone, shoulders rolling loose, grin sharp enough to cut. Lira nocked an arrow in one fluid motion.

  Then the pilrs exploded.

Not from an attack—from the creature walking.

Vhal'Korath took one step forward, and the nearest column simply disintegrated, stone cracking apart under invisible pressure. Chunks of rock lifted briefly into the air before dropping again in a cascade of debris.

The creature tilted its head, neck bending too far. Bones shifted beneath translucent skin as it studied the three figures at the edge of the basin.

"Okay," Rori said slowly, squinting upward. "That's not normal."

Kainen's voice came out tight. "No."

Cold white text materialized between them.

  Voidspawn Tyrant

  Rori exhaled. "...Well, that's comforting."

The smaller creatures began crawling out of the ground—tearing free from the glowing metallic roots threaded through the floor like parasites ripping loose from a host. Skeletal shapes jerked upright, limbs twitching erratically as they formed a loose ring around the basin.

Adds, Kainen thought, eyes narrowing. He had seen raid mechanics before. Typically, when adds spawn, the boss takes a breather—they're meant to break a phase, give you a window. He shook his head once, gaze still locked on the swarm. But this... this feels more like it summoned an army. And it's definitely not waiting.

  The distance between them vanished.

  "MOVE!" Kainen shouted.

Rori dove sideways just as Vhal'Korath's arm swept through the space she had occupied. The impact shattered the ground in a violent explosion of stone, razor-sharp fragments skidding across the arena floor. The shockwave struck her chest like a battering ram.

She rolled hard, boots scraping rock as she forced herself upright. "Oh hell no," she muttered.

  Then she ran toward it.

Her bdes fshed in twin arcs, carving through the first wave of Voidspawn. The creatures weren't strong individually, but they came in clusters—cwing, snapping, trying to swarm her fnks. Rori ducked a strike, drove her sword upward through a creature's jaw, twisted the bde free, and spun into another ssh that opened two more across the chest.

  "Lira!" she shouted.

  "On it!"

Lira's arrow left the bowstring, curving with unnatural precision. It punched cleanly through one Voidspawn and buried itself in another behind it.

She inhaled, power gathering in her legs. "Zephyr Strike," she whispered.

Wind erupted around her. Her body moved like a sudden gust—darting between creatures with impossible speed before releasing another arrow at point-bnk range.

The shot struck Vhal'Korath directly in the chest.

The arrow snapped like a dry twig against the creature's chitin pting.

  "...That's concerning," she said.

  Kainen was already moving.

His hand flicked outward. "Ice Knife!"

The spell formed in the air—a spinning shard of blue crystal that shot forward like a thrown spear. It struck the creature's shoulder and detonated in a violent spray of frozen energy, shards shredding half a dozen smaller Voidspawn.

  Vhal'Korath barely flinched.

  Instead, it turned toward Kainen—slowly.

  "Ah," he murmured. "Wonderful."

  Then it attacked.

The creature's hand smmed downward with the force of a colpsing building.

  Kainen threw himself sideways.

The impact cratered the ground where he had stood, stone fracturing outward in a violent ripple. The shockwave still knocked him off his feet.

  Pain exploded across his ribs.

For a moment, he couldn't breathe.

Across the arena, Rori saw the hit nd. "Kainen!"

  "I'm fine!" he wheezed.

  He absolutely was not.

  But there were bigger problems.

The smaller Voidspawn surged forward again, drawn by the chaos. Rori met them head-on, bdes cutting through the swarm with brutal efficiency.

  But there were too many.

The pressure in her chest surged—that familiar burning sensation. Her blood answered the call.

"Alright," she muttered, tightening her grip. "Let's try that again."

  She stepped forward and swung.

Crimson energy erupted—two massive arcs of blood-colored power tearing through the air in a violent X-shaped ssh, carving through the advancing creatures and smming into Vhal'Korath's torso. Glowing trails hung in the air like wounds in reality.

The drain hit her immediately—vision swimming for half a second as the ability siphoned strength from her own life force.

  But it worked.

For the first time, the massive creature staggered.

  "Kainen!" she shouted.

  "I see it!"

Shadow gathered instantly in his hand. The bde formed with a low hum—darkness folding into a solid edge that swallowed the light around it.

  Kainen sprinted forward—not recklessly, carefully.

The creature's arm came down again.

He flicked his wrist. Minor Illusion bloomed beside him—an exact duplicate of his own movement.

Vhal'Korath's cw tore straight through the illusion.

Kainen slid beneath the strike. Shadow Bde punched upward into the exposed flesh beneath the creature's rib pting.

Violet energy erupted from the wound.

The creature shrieked—the sound rattling the entire arena.

  But it did not fall.

  Instead, the monster grabbed him.

Its massive hand closed around his torso like a steel trap. The pressure crushed the air from his lungs instantly.

Ribs cracked. Pain fred white behind his eyes.

  This is bad, he thought.

  Then Lira moved.

She inhaled sharply and expanded her size mid-charge—growing just enough to sm shoulder-first into the creature's arm with every ounce of draconic strength she could muster.

  "LET HIM GO!"

The impact forced the monster's grip open.

Kainen dropped—hard. The stone floor knocked the breath out of him again.

Across the arena, the smaller Voidspawn surged once more.

Lira raised her hands. "Arrow Volley!"

Energy gathered around her bow as spectral arrows formed above her shoulders—then unched. A storm of glowing projectiles rained across the battlefield, punching through the swarm and clearing a path across the arena floor.

But the effort drained her. She swayed slightly.

"Kainen," she said breathlessly, "I can't keep that up."

He forced himself upright, blood running down the side of his face.

Rori stepped beside him. Both of them stared up at the towering Voidspawn.

The creature's wounds were healing. The Aether in its veins pulsed brighter with every passing second.

Kainen wiped blood from his mouth. "...Alright," he said quietly. "New pn."

Rori grinned despite the pain. "Oh, good."

He pointed toward the creature's chest. "Break the core."

"And how exactly do we do that?"

Kainen lifted Shadow Bde again. "Together."

The three of them moved at the same time.

Rori charged first—rage finally igniting fully inside her chest as the barbarian instinct took hold.

  ===========================

She hit the creature like a hurricane of steel, bdes carving deep through exposed flesh while Lira darted past her fnk, wind still swirling faintly around her legs from the remnants of Zephyr Strike.

  Kainen followed.

Ice Knife formed again in his hand—this time aimed directly for the glowing mass of Aether pulsing beneath the creature's ribs.

  "Now!"

  Rori's Blood Ssh erupted again.

The crimson X struck the creature's chest at the exact moment Ice Knife detonated inside the wound—shards of frozen energy tearing the pting apart and holding the gash open in a burst of bloody frost.

  Lira's arrow followed.

She had already drawn, aimed, and released before the ice even finished exploding.

The shaft threaded the needle—sliding between two massive swinging cws descending toward Kainen and Rori—straight into the exposed, frozen wound.

The arrow struck the core dead-center.

A high, crystalline crack echoed through the arena.

  Then the core shattered.

  Vhal'Korath convulsed violently.

The massive body staggered backward, arms filing, before colpsing into the arena floor with a thunderous impact that shook the entire chamber.

For a moment, a deafening silence followed—broken only by the faint crackle of fading Aether and the trio's ragged breaths.

  Rori swayed. "...Did we..."

  She never finished the sentence.

  All three of them colpsed.

Their HP bars flickered dangerously low.

The system messages appeared one after another.
