Clyde Weathers Issue #1

A group of boys were gathered together on an old bridge. The long abandoned train-tracks that ran across it were rusted and the timber planks were often hollow or missing.

The boys had lines of twine with hooks on the end that they fed down to the rocky river rushing about a km below. Three of the boys were holding the fishing rods whilst the rest sat about, talking and laughing with one another.

All of them talked and laughed, all except for one. One boy that sat just at the edge of the group, quiet, not contributing as always. William had his contempt-filled eye on him. The kid contributed nothing, said nothing, what was the point of him even being here?

“Oi, you.” Will stood up and stepped over to the kid “Do you like fishing?” Members of the group looked at each other and shifted uncomfortably as he said that. The boy remained silent. “Do you like fishing?” The boy stood up, looking at him but remained non-committal. Will began bearing down on him, chest out and the boy backed up “Can you even speak?”

Clyde, seeing this, jumped in between them. “Come on Will, let him go.”

“I'm just asking a question.” Will said, rage burning in his eyes.

“I know Will, I know, but he's not-”

“I don't give a fuck, he shouldn't be apart of the group, he needs to leave.” And he pushed Clyde's chest.

Clyde stumbled back a step, his foot between the wooden boards. He fell, knee hitting a beam which broke shards of it off. As his body fell through the gap, he tried to grab the ancient timber but it crumbled in his hand.

Many hands reached out to grab him and he saw Will's horrified face.

He fell, twisting through the air so that his head was aimed directly at the rocky rapids below.

As he was falling, the sky suddenly filled with a multitude of colors - green, blue, purple, yellow - and a single bolt of lightning made its way down to strike Clyde mid-air. Clyde's descent suddenly slowed down until he came to a complete stop, his forehead mere inches away from the jagged, pointy edge of a rock.

He stayed like this for a moment, suspended in the air, staring bewilderedly at this point which should have split his skull. He felt himself begin to rise, upside down, rise and rise up to the bridge where his friends stared at him in both amazement and fear, then past the bridge higher and higher as they yelled after him. He struggled to twist and thrash his body the right way up. When he eventually did so, his rising stopped. Now he was up in the sky, alone far above those below him. He tried to walk forward but nearly capsized himself. He tried falling and flapping his arms but that did nothing.

He saw a mountain in the distance. He could sense the air molecules between them and, without conscious thought, he was sent Zooming towards the mountain. Terrified, he instinctively made the air near the mountain blow towards himself, slowing him down to a stop.

He tried to contain himself but parts of body jerked almost randomly from the sheer excitement and the adrenalin that was flooding through his body. He forced himself to breathe deeply and slowly until he had calmed down somewhat. He aimed at another mountain and was suddenly thrown forward by a rush of air towards it. This time he didn't need to stop himself from crashing as the wind naturally slowed him down to a stop.

Now he could feel the air molecules more clearly and instinctively dragged his hands through the air, making a wide sweeping motion, then brought his hands to his side and jerked them forward like Superman and the wind came from behind with such force that he burst forward. He could feel the rush of the wind on his face, through his hair and shirt and he loved it. The adrenaline high was making him giddy with excitement.

He slowed to a stop but, exhilarated, he immediately aimed for another mountain, clawed at the air, pulling it around and behind him then blasting it forward, taking him with it straight into the mountain. He crashed through trees and smashed into the ground.
