Chapter 45

A system prompt naturally appeared in front of his face disrupting his relief but knowing that it was probably a good thing he read it.

Congratulations! You have completed the quest “Infestation”

  Accept reward?

Quill accepted the reward, happy that he got some extra potions and a little curious about what these “ bonus credits” would be.

A small wooden crate materialized in front of him and he quickly threw off the lid and snatched up all of the potions, putting them inside his storage ring. He also cast a quick identify and noted they were all g-rank potions which was unfortunate in his opinion. Especially since he was an F-rank now and quite frankly, he didn’t see himself being able to complete this quest without having been an F-rank. Unfortunately there was nothing else inside, no “ bonus credits” as it were.

“Well it did say that you would receive those credits when you left the tutorial so there's that.”

He huffed in annoyance and threw the crate into his storage ring as well. It might be completely worthless but if he was taking it away from the stingy system then that's all that mattered.

He was still feeling exhausted from his fight with the roach king and was more than a little hurt but thankfully he was in his right state of mind and didn't waste potions on making himself feel better. He was going to need everything for when he fought the cursed sins. Plus it's not like waiting around to recover was going to kill him…. or at least it shouldn't.

He didn't feel like checking on the cursed sins and dealing with whatever crazy terror effect they had so instead opted to check out the break room in the Grand Station and see if that was where the roaches were hiding all of their stuff too.

However as he began to make his way down to the kiosk where the locked door lay I thought occurred and he immediately froze. “Mother fucker! I didn't get a level up from fighting the roach King! That fight absolutely deserved a level up! This is what I mean when I call you stingy!” he shouted up into the air towards the system.

“I don't think the system cares sweetie. Plus wasn't the roach King a lower level to you. Pretty sure why that fight was so difficult for you was because you were already a little tired from fighting his guards and weren’t expecting his little headless berserker thing which put you on the back foot.”

“Don't bring reason into my argument! the point stands! The system is stingy!”

That earned a set of laughter from her and he felt the tiniest upward curve of his lips that threatened to turn into a smile only to quickly dig his nails into his arm and pushed his attention towards the task at hand.

He quickly dismissed the prompts and waited to see if she would comment but she was too busy laughing too seemed to have noticed and he quickly made his way towards the kiosk.

He broke a window and hopped inside before heading towards the door. It kind of sucked that he was going to have to use energy manifestation now given how exhausted he was. But he supposed it wasn't too big of a deal since it was just a key. After a quick turn the lock on hatched and he swung open the door.

“ That was lucky. I was expecting the door to be riddled with traps that would go off the moment you opened it.”

Quill froze, not even looking at the inside of the break room when she spoke. “I didn't even think of that. why didn't you warn me?”

“Because I highly doubt that any traps they had would be lethal to you and I thought it would be funny to watch you trigger whatever contraption they had in place. Sadly nothing happened, talk about a let down.”

“Please, if you think I'm walking into a trap. Tell me.”

“but I did tell you~” She spoke in the most unserious voice he had heard yet.

“You know damn well what I meant.”

“I make no promises” she responded which he interpreted as no. So with a heavy sigh he took one step into the break room, froze at realizing his error, and quickly started scanning everywhere for potential traps.

“Hey, you're learning! Try not to learn too quickly though. Your silly mistakes are a great source of entertainment.”

Once he had confirmed that there were no traps waiting to unleash their mechanisms against him. He walked further inside and started to examine everything within the break room.

Again there were plenty of weapons, jewels, coins, and various miscellaneous things that Quill believed would or could be used to make traps. There were even several large jars of poisons and some kind of flammable liquid. He made sure to store those in a separate area inside his storage ring as they would likely prove useful for him when he fought the other cursed sins.

Support creative writers by reading their stories on Royal Road, not stolen versions.

“Awh. and here I was hoping you'd fight those worms head on. really give him a good ol 'pummeling.”

He snorted at that comment. “Even if I thought I could fight those monsters without any special trap or back up, which I don't. Why would I take the risk? Heck why would I over exert myself and run the chance of me getting even slightly hurt when I can just kill them without any of that?”

  “I don't know. Honor?”

“Honor is for the Dead. I will honor the cursed sins when I have killed them.”

“Don't do that. if anything you should piss on their corpses.”

That made him chuckle and mild amusement and continued to throw everything that was in the break room into his storage ring. Even after he was done he still had a ton of room inside which really was a testament to how much space this supposed “small” capacity was. He was almost scared as to what a large space would be.

As he exited the break room, he looked at the roach corpses on the ground. With a heavy and disgusted sigh he began throwing those into his storage ring as well. Which included the remains of the king. He didn't like it, but in the worst case scenario they could serve as emergency food.

With that taken care of he realized he was at a loss. He didn't really know where to go from here. He only had one Quest left which was to take care of the remaining sins and as much as he didn’t want to do that, it seemed like the next logical choice as much as it pained him to admit.

So he turned his head towards the stairs that led up to the hall and therefore the platforms. He still needed to confirm that they were all the same colors as the ones in the previous Grand Station.

He began scouting the stations, waiting for whichever cursed sin would show up with its arrival time. Always having to bite his lip as its fear aura moved over him. You'd think that having killed one would make looking and dealing with these fuckers a little easier.

Once he confirmed that all five that were remaining were the same ones that were in the other Grand Station he let out a collective sigh of relief. Perhaps it was just his paranoia speaking but he knew that there was still a chance of more cursed sins hiding somewhere that he just didn't know about.

He could easily see the system being such an asshole that there was a hidden train yard or something with 50 more of the worms just chilling about and not pacified in the slightest.

He would probably go through the tunnels after he dealt with the other five. Just to look around and explore and make sure no other scary or dangerous things we're hiding that he just didn't know about. The system would absolutely do something like that.

“ I feel like you are a little harsh on the system. I mean sure it's definitely been throwing a whole lot of stuff at you but it's nothing you haven't been able to handle.”

“ What about all the other humans that were brought into this tutorial dungeon and were promptly killed. Whether by the rat kin, the roaches, or the cursed sins. I don't think the system really cares whether somebody can handle it or not.”

“ Who gives a shit about them anyways? Clearly not the system. And maybe they could have handled it and they just didn't because they just aren’t as special as you.”

“Real reassuring. No, the system is just an asshole. I will die on that hill.”

“Suit yourself, no skin off my nose.”

With all that taken care of he decided he was just going to rest for a bit. He didn't think there would be any other enemies outside of the couple stations of rat kin that had been loyal to the rat king but nothing that would pose a threat to him besides of the cursed sins. He was probably going to have to ask Ssevinac about what they should do with those rat kin. He was fine with killing any systems spawn ones but he felt like if it was possible they should spare any of the sentient ones so long as they agreed to not cause trouble.

All that said, he was tired, the battle he had gone through with the King and the usage of his manifestation was draining and he just wanted to rest a little bit longer. So he was going to rest for a little bit and when he felt better he would go back and talk to Ssevinac.

“ Why do you want to talk to Ssevinac anyways? You've done what he asked. Seems to be the end of your business transaction and I don't want to see you taking another stupid contract. No offense.”

“None taken. And to answer your question, I want more bombs. enough bombs that I can blow all five of those sins too kingdom come. But I am also hoping that I can learn a bit more about trap making and just general knowledge about the world that I'll be stepping into. I'd imagine building those bombs will take a little bit so it will be a perfect time to learn about what to expect.”

“I suppose that makes sense. So are we heading off?”

“In a bit. I just want to take a few more moments to breathe. Maybe I'll enjoy some of this artwork that's plastered all over this station.”

And that's exactly what he did. Perhaps it was just him looking for a reason to dissociate but it was nice. Nice to just have a bit of a breather and look at something that had a neat little artistic flair. Even if it was copy and pasted.

He wondered how much of what was being depicted had some kind of true event or mythology attached to it. Given that he got a raised evolution called celestial he almost wondered if the angels that were depicted in these murals were actually real and not some kind of religious imagery.

“Perhaps both? I have a feeling a lot has changed in your world. would stand to reason that these depictions could both be real life events, propaganda, and Religious iconography.”

“Sounds like a headache waiting to happen.” he said as you looked at one particular mural that showed angels killing a bunch of grotesque beasts while various humanoid races cheered them on.

It actually seemed like a pretty uplifting depiction but he would reserve judgment as he felt the context from some other murals made the angels seem a little less benevolent.

His attention turned towards another one where it showed an angel standing up on a mountain of decapitated heads with various humanoid races bowing down towards them on the ground. if you looked closer towards the faces of the ones bowing you could tell they were twisted in grief and sadness. This was another question he was going to have to ask Ssevinac when he had the time.

“ Are you done looking at boring paintings? They'd be a little more interesting if they had murals of you that's all just boring.”

“ murals of me huh?” he let out a chuckle at that. “ what a nightmarish thought”

“The prettiest nightmare there ever was. So are you done?”

“Yeah. let's go meet with Ssevinac”
