Chapter 5 - I Could Hug You Right Now

CHAPTER 5 | I Could Hug You Right Now

After that big showdown, I returned back to my room. But I needed some real relaxation. So, this time around, there were no flashing neon lights, or any music playing at all. It was just me, the couch and a cigarette.

And sitting right beside me was Samantha, legs crossed. Her eyes stared me down intently, but I pretended not to notice.

  “Aren’t you happy?” she asked.

She was referring to the events following my fight with the vampire. When all the teams were done, it concluded the end of the games first challenges. And the rankings were updated.

I moved from #90 up to rank #85. Funny thing, that used to be Lisa’s rank, but she was moved down to #84.

“It’s nothing to celebrate really.” I only moved up a total of 15 ranks, that wasn’t a whole lot.

Something was on my mind. It wasn’t important in the grand scheme of things, but it still was on my mind. Out of the 100 contestants, there was only one elimination so far. And that was Oliver. I felt bad for him but, at the same time, he would’ve never died if he was a bit more useful. He saved me, so I hated to feel ungrateful. It was still a fact regardless.

It was unfortunate, but it wasn't worth thinking about anymore.

A new thought came to mind. The hits I sustained earlier were painful. I didn’t think I had it in me to fight like that... Since that fight, my mind hasn’t been able to focus. Like it woke something up inside of me. I was finally able to let loose. The pain was unlike anything I'd ever felt, but so was that feeling. That feeling of “kill or be killed.”

A cloud of smoke blew from my lips.

  “When’s the next challenge starting?”

“Eager. Aren’t you?” Samantha giggled, “You can wait awhile. The hosts are still setting up everything up for the next challenge.”

This story is posted elsewhere by the author. Help them out by reading the authentic version.

“Hosts? Then why are you here?” I asked.

“In not involved in helping out any time soon. Not till the later levels. That’s where I have some things planned.”

The way she said, it sounded like it was something to brace myself for. Based on the amount of bloodshed and violence so far, it was hard to imagine the games getting any harder.

“But it’s my job to give the contestants their rewards from level one. So, that’s why I came to visit you.”

She snapped her finger, and a blue haze covered the outline of my body. Glowing. Then it faded.

Suddenly, I felt lighter on my feet, and stronger. Like I could take a lion head on.

  “What did you just do?”

“That’s one of your rewards. I just enhanced a few of your physical capabilities. That’s all.” she smiled and raised her finger, “Now for your last rewards. You get to pick two weapons and any item. Any weapon you could think of.”

I stroked my chin as I gave it some good thought. Then I raised my hand.

“What about a nuke?” I asked.

“Let me rephrase. Any handheld weapon.”

  “A handheld nuke.”

“No. Be realistic.” the goddess shook her head and sighed. But then she smiled, “But I like the determination for chaos.”

I gave it some more thought. Using weapons never really crossed my mind. Unless there was a weapon right in front of me, it was never really my first choice. Though with how weak I am, it should be my first choice. But I guess a gun would be a pretty solid choice.

“Give me a good handgun. Something that will last.” I said.

“Then you’ll need ammo to go with it. But don’t worry, here you go.

She snapped her fingers. There was a flash of light around my waste, then a handgun appeared on my hip in a holster. And I had on a belt. A belt that held 4 extra mags.

Perfect. This was perfect. I almost wanted to hug her for this.

“5 magazines, sixty bullets in total. It should last you. Now, your next weapon.”

Since the handgun was arranged weapon, it was only natural that I got a melee weapon to go with it.

“Give me a bat. A metal bat. With spikes. And for my item, give me a grenade.”

“Oooh. I like. Granted!” Samantha’s voice quaked with joy.

In in no time, I was holding the spike bat I asked for, with a grenade on my belt.

  “Beautiful.”

I clenched the handle of the bat and held it up to my face. It was sparkling clean. Clean enough that I could see my own reflection off it.

“Solid steel. Enhanced with a touch of Celestial TV magic.” she smirked.

I almost couldn’t wait. I don’t know about everyone else, but I was ready to get the next level started.

“I’m going to love to see how you use them. I’ll be watching. Now, I got other contestants to reward.”

Before she left, she made sure to reassure me, “And don’t you worry. You won’t be waiting much longer.”

She vanished, wearing a wide smile before she left.

“I hope not.” I sat down, switching on the television. Letting me eyes watch the highlight of level one. Lots, and lots of blood. And the way some of these contestants fought, they were like beasts.

“I have a long way to go.”
