Chapter 2: Over My Head

A few minutes pass when the fairy speaks its mind once more.

“How far are you going anyway?”

Speaking while jogging wasn’t good for me right now. I didn’t have to check the status window to know I was Level 1, with the lowest stamina to boot.

  “Don’t just ignore me!”

  “Here.”

A half destroyed wizard's tower was in sight now.

  “That isn’t the city…”

  She did an exaggerated facepalm.

“I knew you were an idiot.”

I jumped in through the nearest window and brushed off the spiders from the cobwebs I just went through. It was a rustic place that probably hasn’t been used in a century, the skeleton on the chair nearby certainly proved it. I looked at the nearest bookshelf and two hand crafted wands.

  “Can you even use magic?”

Mel looked disappointed, but didn’t say anything as I took the clothes off of the skeleton.

  “...”

  Achieved title: Grave Robber

  Small increase to stamina!

I put the clothes on, it was a basic warriors outfit, clearly not the wizard who once lived here.

“First thing you do is put on the clothes of a dead person?”

“I don’t like things to go to waste.”

I made my way up the old wooden stairs, skipping past easily breakable steps on the way. At the top was a room sealed shut with a bolted door.

“Haha good luck getting through this magical barrier. Looks like no one has ever got through this one.”

I bent one of the wands in my hands while walking up to the door.

“What was that for? That was a quality wand!”

As I put the two wands into the lock on the door I said-

  “Show Status: Custom skill set.”

  Custom skill set:

  Max-Level Exp boost

  Max-Level Appraisal resistance

  Medium-Level Sacred water strike

  Max-Level Rune knowledge

  Guide Melphelia

This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.

  “What are you doing?!?”

The door went click as I threw the bent wand on to the floor beside me, putting the other into storage.

  “Wait… Max-Level Lock picking…”

I slid through the door while Mel followed.

“Maybe you're not so bad, eh? Maybe we have a chance against this demon lord?”

“We don’t Mel. You should know that of all people.”

“I’m being optimistic- Wait, what was your name again?”

  “Rein.”

I looked on the bookshelf to the left and grabbed the dustiest book there.

“It’s okay if you forget it.”

Not looking at the book’s cover I brushed it off and put it in my storage.

“It’s okay if I forget it?”

I grabbed a handful of potions and did the same, then made my way back down the stairs. Mel seemed confused again.

“Rein, what happened in your past life?”

  I couldn't make eye contact.

“Well, you’ll learn that soon enough.”

“What is that supposed to mean? Wait… no, don’t answer that.”

Now exiting what remained of a front door I followed a path straight. Jogging to try and keep pace.

“Where are you going? You know you're supposed to enjoy this journey, right?”

“I already did the first time.”

  Achieved title: Runner

  Small increase to stamina

  Learned skill:

  Low-Level Sprinting

“I get it, you had your fun with your past life, and now you want to get yourself together this time.”

I ran straight into the cave ahead of me.

  “But this is ridiculous!”

I plunged into the darkness while still keeping pace.

  “Left…”

“What? You can see clearly like this?”

  “I can’t unsurprisingly. Right…”

“Then how are you doing this?”

“You still do give off a faint light…”

“Oh. See I’m more useful than you thought right?”

  “Right… Wait no, wrong.”

  “Hey!”

After a left and two right turns at a fork, I reached an open room with an ominous light in the center.

  “Is that a… fire dragon?!?”

  “Shh…”

A fire dragon was fast asleep in the center of the room surrounded by gold, gems, and everything valuable in between.

“Shh? You know I speak through telepathy right?”

“And you also know telepathy uses mana and dragons are very sensitive to magic??”

  “Ah-”

While now in a whisper Mel said-

“Watch this. I have my unique skill.”

“True, it’s the only thing that makes you useful.”

I started crawling behind it while she put a hand around her right eye.

  “Appraisal!”

A menu popped up for me when I heard a shriek from guess who.

Level 45 - Unnamed: Fire Dragon 132 years old

  “AHHH!”

“Didn’t I tell you to be quiet?”

“You have to run! That thing’s got 100 times your stats!”

By this time I was already behind the dragon.

“Panicking isn’t going to do any good now.”

I started the sift through some of the gold the dragon was slumbering under.

  “What are you doing?!?!?!”

“What does it look like I’m doing?”

“You can- you can’t- you can’t just steal from a dragon!”

“Listen if anything now is the time to do so, since I’m so weak I’m also that hard to detect.”

“You really thought this through huh… But still you can’t just-!”

  “-Found it!”

Out of the gold I grabbed a light blue sword with an edges that glistened sharply.

  “Uhh…”

By this time the dragon had an eye open. Its pupil focused on me.

  “RUN!”

Before it could react I shouted the words-

  “Sacred water strike!”

A moment later I had the entire length of my new blade inside of the dragon's eye.
