Prologue

It was a beautiful day. The sky was the bluest it had ever been. Not a cloud in the sky. A perfect day to take a short boat ride in the harbor.

An old dy stood on the dock, looking out at the beautiful water. Boats, docked around and sailing in the water. She was a short woman, at 5 feet even. She looked even shorter as she slouched to lean on her wooden cane. She had long silvery hair, tied into a low ponytail. Her eyes were a dull color of green. Her face showed her age, but not in a bad way. The wrinkles showed her experience more than her age. Her long blue dress fluttered softly in the breeze coming off the water.

  “Grandma!”

The old woman turned with a warm smile, her eyes crinkling up more from the smile.

“Yes, my little one?” she said, her voice a bit cracked but still sounding sweet.

A girl of 6 looked up at the old woman. She was wearing a beautiful sun dress of yellow and pink flowers. Her hands were behind her back as she rocked on the heels of her feet. She seemed to not be wearing any shoes. Her big brown eyes looked full of wonder and questions. Her smile was big and wide, showing two missing teeth.

“Have you even been on a boat?” she asked.

The old woman hummed as she closed her eyes.

  “It’s been ages.”

“Really?” the girl asked with wide eyes.

The old woman chuckled before opening her eyes, a twinkle in them.

  “Why’s that?” the girl asked.

“Stop bothering grandma, Emma.” came a male voice from behind the girl.

A man was walking over with a bag over his shoulder. He was a tan-looking man with short bck hair and brown eyes. He was pretty tall at 5’11”. He was dressed in some swim shorts and a white tank top. He adjusted the bck framed gsses on his face as he stood next to his daughter.

“It’s not a bother, Gerald.” the woman said with a smile.

“Are you sure, ma?” Gerald asked, looking a bit worried.

“Absolutely. I know you and your sister are sick of the story by now.” the old woman said, gently patting Gerald’s arm.

“Well I’m not.” came a female voice.

A woman was carrying a baby in a sling across her body, the baby facing the woman. She had one hand gently resting on the baby’s back. Her blonde hair was short and moving in the light breeze. Her green eyes shined as she walked up to the small group.

“That’s because you didn’t have to grow up with the stories, Steph.” Gerald said with a sigh; a small smile still crossing his lips.

“What story?!” Emma asked with wide eyes.

  The old woman chuckled.

“A wonderous story! Full of danger, action, love, and bravery.” the old woman said, tapping Emma’s nose.

Emma giggled as she rubbed her nose.

“And, it’s a true story!” she said with a wide grin.

“Really?!” Emma said with her eyes sparkling.

“Partially true, mind you.” Gerald said with a chuckle.

“Hmph, you still don’t believe the entire story do you?” the old woman said pursed lips.

“Come on mom! It seems a bit out there and you know it. The only reason I believe some of it, is because of the newspaper clippings and my birth certificate.” Gerald said with a roll of his eyes.

“I’ll believe you grandma!” Emma said, bringing her hands in front of her, in determination.

The old woman ughed and petted the girl’s head.

  “And you should!”

“All aboard!” came a voice from one of the boats.

“I guess we should make our way.” Gerald said, shifting the bag on his shoulder.

“Let’s go!” Emma shouted before grabbing her grandma’s hand.

“Yes, lets!” the old woman said before following her family to the boat.

“It was almost 40 years ago now….” she began as they settled on the boat.

“It was on a beautiful day, like today, a day I will never forget….”
