Torpedo is an expansive story told in alternating main chapters with positive numbering (covering the events from the synopsis above) and side chapters with negative numbering (covering the years leading up to these events in nonlinear order). This represents a sort of "final draft" of the story; while minor action items remain on the way to a theoretical definitive "for publishing" state, I feel this won''''t be truly definitely finished before the heat death of the universe. So it''''s time to get it out there. And yeah, the whole thing''''s gonna be published here and stay here, barring a freak accident with a publishing deal complete with Early Retirement money. (Also if ScribbleHub had [Neo-Noir] and [Heroic Bloodshed] tags, they would apply.) DIsclaimer Stuff: Torpedo contains depictions of violence that I consider frank but stopping short of gratuitous. Also, there is profanity. Lots of profanity. Some of that is admittedly gratuitous. That much was fine by me and I hope it’s fine by you. Now let’s move on to the stuff I do feel less than okay about. You’ll find I take a rather wide view of what constitutes a slur, so I’ve tried to minimize their use and called out all the ones I recognized as such in footnotes, but I couldn’t see my way to completely excluding them from character dialogue. You will encounter depictions of racism, sexism and homophobia, as well as drug abuse and questionable consent. I have tried to approach these issues with as much grace as I could muster, but I’m very much not trying to claim the Gold for Most Woke. I’m as fallible and naive as the next heterosexual male white middle-class ‘intellectual’ writing about topics way outside his wheelhouse. If I have uncritically included a phrase or an attitude in this story that is hurtful to you, please be assured this was not done with malice on my part. In fact, I would greatly appreciate it if you could let me know about it, so I can a) fix it and b) do better in the future. Pretty much everything the characters in this story get up to is a terrible idea. Sometimes I take the time to explain why, but by default, assume whatever happens in here is not what you’d want to do in real life. All depictions and descriptions of equipment and techniques in this story are included for entertainment purposes only. Insofar as I might at any point come across as if I know what I’m writing about, please be assured I don’t and I only affect the authoritative voice to minimize the tedium of the otherwise necessary weaseling.
