Ch. 7.1 – “Ghulam”

When they break the gate, they will not be stopped...The hexer makes no registry in the stars on high...Dark whispers at every corner with bad intentions in the air...

What of Master? What of us?

Master has to, MUST, be defended!

"This is a relief from our usual routine."

"About the only chance we get to leave the tower."

"It's exhausting and filthy, but we can get used to it compared to...well..."

  So they say.

I would not know better than the others do. Not since I've arrived. Not since the heavy barrel barked and shook the night sky, wiping out the town I was brought in by in one bst.

So we were made to service Master's men throughout the days and nights.

But we've been worked raw every day, every night...buckets of water, barrels of powder, up and down the stairs hauling material...

Master is most merciful to allow us a wash and some time to sleep.

All must be done to keep Master alive, I suppose.

Bagbad-kabir sleeps tightly wound behind me, gripping me firmly in her embrace as such that her warmth engulfed me through our thin night robes. She always carries herself with such a regal and confident manner, always looking after us and giving us coquettish encouragements.

She made my first night warm and welcoming after being inspected.

After my life was made Master's sole discretion.

Perhaps even Master's special one gets scared too.

So I indulge her and bring her arms closer to my chest, keep her soft hands warm as the draft pecks our faces and blows her elegant bck hair on mine.

I held tight to her back. I wanted to stop it all. For soon came the retaliation. Stopped on the road, for sure, but more were on their way.

Why don't they just execute us and we end with this?

  No...can't think that...

But the others don't notice things. They are busy with whisper of uncertainty. A bit of finer or wet powder in the mix. A loose piece on the fire-barrels. Some thin concoction in the water.

Soon the winds howl with blood. I convince Bagbad-kibar to help me convince Master to get us more sleep. We'll need it more. Yet it is the first time we get a chance to get speak to each other more, and before anyone knows it, we invoke a forbidden thought...

But how to reconcile...can it be done? It's rather fanciful to think so if what is said is true.

And the night the barrel roared again.

The vile man would soon come...

One st action for the night. Pull a pin out from under the barrel.

I think it worked. It still fires, but...No, stop! Quiet!

  His gaze...

We serve Master to the end!

We HAVE to serve Master's will.

What? The gaze went blind...Where is it? At st, it hid away, but I feel his bea...Enough, enough!

If we are going to do this, we need him alive. But that will be difficult, especially with that ravenous specter stalking on the outside, with a coarse and wrecked form beckoning death in his steps. Even Master is compelled to witness what was wrought from the night before, bringing us over to see in turn.

"Look down and remember. Remember this well. There is no use in believing them as your saviors."

Master cannot be defied. Master must be kept saved at all times...unless...

  No...don't look...stay away, DON'T LOOK!

  "WAKE UP!"

  Ah...I think...Ah, my head!

But at least I'm out. Three guards dead...Wait, where are the others

  "Forget us! Go save Master!"

Oh no! How did they get stuck inside?! No - the key is broken on the doorway!

"It's no use. Get Master over here! We need him as leverage!"

Bagbad-kibar, Fandi, Yagya...All of you...I can only see your faces...

"Look, you actually did it. That hexer will be honing in on you if what you said is true. I don't care if you really are damned, but I'd rather we be free with you before submitting to THAT DISGUSTING MAN ever again!"

Always the bigger sister, eh Bagbad-kibar?

"We can't help you, but we can still pull this off. Don't disappoint me now, cutie.?"

I can only grab their hands through the bars. And so I'm off, with a long bde on a short pole.

  "Go get him!"

  "Please hurry!"

"I want to spend more time with you, friend!"

"You got this! I believe in you!"

  "DON'T LEAVE US!"

  ...

Their encouraging words slowly fade away as I leave them behind.

Everyone else is where they need to be, but where to find Master in all of this? I don't even know much...I hear something...

One pair of steps...Master's private quarters, down below!

It has to be him, that sounds like his boots!

So close...I don't know how long I can go on, but there's no time to fail them. Just enter the door and...
