Chapter 6

  akame206

After arriving home, we changed our clothes. Spring here is still fairly cold, so we wore slightly thicker outfits. I was in the study—which also serves as our workspace—sitting across from my father to discuss something.

“Dad, I’d like to ask for something.”

“It’s rare for you to request anything. What is it?”

“I’d want a computer. It doesn’t have to be expensive.”

  “Sure, that’s no problem.”

“Also, I might need a bank account.”

  “What for?”

“I pn to start writing a light novel. Maybe next month I’ll submit it to a publisher, so I might need the account ter, but not right now.”

“Alright. But before you hand it over to a publisher, I’d like to read it first.”

“Of course. Also, please keep this a secret for now.”

“Okay. And about the computer, you can use my old ptop over there. If it’s not working, I’ll buy you a new one.”

“Thank you,” I said, then stood up to grab the ptop sitting in the far-right corner of the room. After that, I headed back to my room.

I set the ptop on my desk and turned it on.

“It’s booting up. Now let’s connect to the internet... connected. Let’s test some applications... seems okay.” After that, I checked its specifications.

“This thing’s really outdated, but for now, it’s good enough,” I thought.

I shut it down and returned to the study.

“Dad, the ptop works. Do you have a screwdriver and a small vacuum or a brush? I’d like to open it up and clean it.”

“Great that it still turns on. Try checking the garage. We don’t have a small vacuum, but there’s a fine brush you can use. Will you be alright doing it yourself? I can do it if you’d rather.”

“It’s okay, I’ll do it. I’ve learned how. If something goes wrong, I’ll ask.” After replying, I went to the storage room and searched for a screwdriver and brush for a while.

On my way back to my room, I ran into Rin and my mom, who were watching TV.

“Nii-san, what are you going to do?” Rin asked when she saw me holding a brush and a screwdriver.

“I’m going to clean Dad’s old ptop, which I’m going to use.”

“Since when did you become an expert at that?” she asked, giving me a strange look.

“Any real otaku knows a thing or two about computers,” I answered, though I actually learned all this in my previous life when I graduated with a computer degree, Even though I realized at near the end of my college years that I wasn’t cut out for it but I still finished it.

Fortunately, technology here is almost on par with the era I came from.

  “Wait, can I watch?”

  She must be bored

“Sure. I’ll expin each part. If there’s something you don’t understand about computers, just ask.”

So we went to my room, grabbed the ptop, sat on the floor, and started taking it apart while I expined each component—like what the HDD, RAM, motherboard, VGA, and processor are, as well as how a computer basically works.

“For now, that’s all you need to know. If you ever want to dive deeper into computers or get curious about something, I’ll be happy to expin,” I said, then closed the casing and put it back on my desk. I powered it on again.

“Nice, it’s running a bit smoother than before.” Now it was time to shoo my little sister out.

“Well, that’s the end of today’s lesson. You may go now, dear imouto.”

“Eh? Can’t I watch what you’re going to do next?”

“No,” I replied, pushing her out of the room.

She gave me a look like she was staring at trash. “Don’t tell me you’re—”

“No! I’m going to do something important. If you really want to know, wait a few more months, you pervy little sister,” I said, then closed the door.

“Ugh, I just wanted to see,” she grumbled, puffing out her cheeks before walking away.

“Alright, the little nuisance is gone. Let’s see what kind of harem novels are out there.” After more than thirty minutes, I realized many popur harem titles I knew from my old life don’t exist here.

“Hmm… Since I want to write a story about that game, I should check if the reted companies exist. Let’s see if ‘Rec’ or ‘Argus’ are around in this world.”

“Nothing. Maybe they haven’t been founded yet or they simply don’t exist. It’s only 2013 here, after all. I feel a bit conflicted because I wanted to py SAO, even though I know what’s waiting for me. But at least it means I can write that story without issues.”

“Let’s check the Fujikawa Shoten website.”

“Found it. Let’s see if they’ve published Koisuru Metronome,.... nothing? Let’s see if the author posted it somewhere else as a web novel.”

  A few minutes ter…

“No results. Maybe she haven’t started or maybe they’ll upload it at the st minute.”

“There’s a competition, and the deadline is next month. Let’s see if the author is uploading it there.”

“Still nothing. So maybe they really haven’t posted it yet. Or they’ll upload it at the final second.”

“In that case, I’ll join the contest. If the author uploads it at the st second, I’ll just hope we both get picked by the same editor. Or even if it’s different editors, it doesn’t matter, as long as it gets published.”

  “Time to get to work.”
